have had many outstanding achievements and accomplishmentsPlease take a few moments and enjoy some of our Shining Stars!

Southeast Art Teacher, Mrs. Marcia Guetschow,
Receives Grant

Congratulations to our super art teacher, Mrs. Marcia Guetschow, who recently was awarded a $200 grant from the Howell Education Foundation.  Mrs. Guetschow will use this grant toward the purchase of materials necessary for the Gee's Bend Quilting Project which will integrate story telling, art, history, and literature.  The women of Gee's Bend, an isolated community with little influence from Western art traditions, recycled cloth out of necessity.  They created their quilts from scraps of material, old clothes and whatever usable cloth they could find.  These women have been stitching quilts since the 1800's and never thought of what they did as art, or considered themselves artists.  Art is rooted in our daily lives, and as a result, often overlooked.  Congratulations to Mrs. Guetschow and to the students who will benefit from this wonderful learning experience!

Great Things Have Been Happening at
Southeast Elementary

Ms. Gallinger Utilizes a Class Website

Southeast Elementary third grade teacher, Ms. Kay Gallinger, has created a class website using the classjump.com website.  Now her students are able to access their own calendars of homework and class events.  Also included in this site is a class message board where students are able to upload documents for home use. What a wonderful communication tool!

Southeast Student Council Applies to
Become a Green School

Southeast Elementary has recently applied to the State of Michigan to become a Michigan Green School.  Mr. John Seyfarth, third grade teacher and Student Council Advisor, has initiated the application process.  To qualify, a school must demonstrate that they have a paper recycling program, an energy savings program, recycle batteries, cell phones and ink cartridges, and maintain an up-to-date environmental library to name a few.  Southeast meets and, in some cases, exceeds these criteria! Congratulations to our student council for leading this important initiative.  Go Green!

Mrs. Keaton's Class Celebrates the Inauguration

Mrs. Keaton's class at Southeast Elementary recently celebrated the presidential inauguration by studying the Washington D.C. area and the federal government.  They further researched the transition of power and the lives of President Obama, Vice-President Biden, and past presidents.  They also planned a luncheon and hosted another classroom as they watched the inauguration ceremonies.  The class prepared a program and made a presentation to the office staff.  Hail to the Chief!

Southeast Holds Abilities Day

Southeast Elementary fourth graders recently participated in a special collaborative event called Abilities Day, organized by Laurie Punch, school counselor.  On this day many of the specialists in our building as well as other LESA personnel presented lessons and activities to promote empathy and understanding of individuals with physical or mental challenges.  Our principal, school psychologist, teachers, counselor, speech and language pathologists, parent volunteers and many more worked together to make this an educational and meaningful event.  Students are given written assignments after this event to informally assess both their understanding and any change of attitude or feelings about individual with disabilities.

Three Fires Middle Schools Is Filled With Good Cheer
Proudly Submitted by: Donna VandeBerg-Taylor

Here at Three Fires Middle Schools the 7th grade traditionally participates in a program called Operation Good Cheer.  This program provides presents for children in foster care all over the state of Michigan.  This year we raised over $1,400 for this project.  The next stepis the purchase of 3 gifts from the list of 6 given to us.  Those gifts are then wrapped and labled so that they get to the intended destination.  This is the true gift of giving, in that children who receive the gifts do not know where they came from.  Our students here at Three Fires were extremely generous this year in that we could "adopt" 44 children ranging in age from newborn to 17 for Christmas.

On December 6th the National Guard came and picked up the gifts which were bagged for shipment to the Pontiac Airport.  There they were sorted for trucking and flights out to the various destinations around our state.  On December 7th the Pontiac Airport is a busy place were plans with volunteer pilots fly the presents to the children.

Pride Runs High For Hutchings Elementary Food Drive        Proudly Submitted by: JoAnn McKim, Hutchings Library Services Coordinator

We at Hutchings are proud to share the results of our school wide Food Drive to benefit The Livingston Community Holiday Harvest Project; a joint venture of the Salvation Army and Gleaners Community Food Bank.Starting on November 17th thru December 5th, Hutchings' Student Council led by teacher Jason DeLand, challenged our students to reach a new goal this year of 2,500 items, based on a slight increase from last year's total of 2,100 items donated. In light of the current economic downturn, we were a bit unsure of attaining the new goal.

Our students and families responded triumphantly, donating 3,874 food items!

The Gleaners volunteers picked up the items on the morning of Wednesday, December 10; and later that day reported a total donation weight of 3,589 pounds of food, almost two tons worth!

Needless to say, we are very proud of our student's and their family's donations!

5th grade students Kaylyn & Genevieve Mix It Up!

Mixing It Up at Southeast Elementary

November the 13th was no ordinary day in Southeast Elementary lunchroom.  On that day students were asked to sit at a different lunch table with a different person.  It was the annual "Mix it up at lunch day". There was excitement, giggles and a few new friendships were made. School Counselor Mrs. Punch as well as Southeast teachers prepared students for this day with discussions and role playing on how to start conversations with a new person and the benefits to being open to meeting new people.  "We want everyone to feel welcome and a sense of belonging at our school" says Mrs. Punch the School Counselor. "Mix it up day is a great way to reinforce positive social skill".

Latson Elementary's Fourth Graders
Put A New Meaning on Trick or Treating

Halloween may be over, but the SWEET rewards that come with Trick or Treating came with a SWEET jingle! The fourth graders in Mrs. Karaska's class spent the month of October and early into November Trick or Treating for UNICEF. The class collected $286.25 for UNICEF. This was a great civic lesson, as the students actively participated in the collection of money and them contemplated how that money might help the common good of all children around the world. This was also a wonderful supplement to their Unit 4 lessons in place value, adding and subtracting with decimals. This activity was a SWEET treat for the entire class!

Northwest Elementary
Student Council Sponsors Food Drive

With the state of the economy is as important as ever to make sure everyone has enough to eat.  The Northwest Elementary Student Council in conjunction with the Gleaner's Food Bank organized a can food drive. The students advertised this event with posters that were hung up around the school, through their school newspaper and on their morning announcements.  In efforts to bring in as many nonperishable food items as possible students were offered an ice cream party to the class that brought in the most food items. Together the students at Northwest brought in over 800 nonperishable food items to send to the Gleaner's Food Bank and a few less people will go to bed hungry thanks to the Northwest students.

Students enjoying a multicultural feast -celebrating family, tradition and differences

Hutchings Elementary's Fourth Graders
Hosts Diversity Feast

Do you know what country your grandparents or great-grandparents came from?  Do your know what customs and traditions they had growing up? What were some of their favorite recipes? The fourth graders at Hutchings spent the month of November working on a diversity booklet that focused on their family heritage. This booklet included some of these very questions. On Thursday November 20th, the 100 plus students held a Diversity Feast to showcase their family's heritage. Students brought in dishes to share based on their family's country of origin.  Before the students and their teachers were able to dig into the multicultural smorgasbord, students had the opportunity to listen to a couple of exchange students and one international student that attend Howell High School.  They spoke to the fourth grade students about their traditions, experiences and homelands, which included Japan, Mexico and Argentina.  Fourth grade teacher Melissa Burch says, "The Diversity Feast is a valuable experience for the kids because it shows that while we all come from different backgrounds, people have more in common than differences."  The feast was a huge success with lots of sauerkraut, kielbasa, gnocchi and awesome desserts.

Pumpkin Fest  A 5th Grade
Tradition at Hutchings Elementary

The 5th graders and their teachers, Mr.DeLand, Mrs. Linhart, Mrs. Kelly and Mr. Prince at Hutchings Elementary look forward to this fun and educational tradition that takes place each fall. Pumpkin Fest is an opportunity to explore this unique fruit that has become a symbol for Halloween.
First students are paired off with their pumpkins to discuss and describe the physical properties of this orange fall fruit. Next it's all about the DATA! The students make predictions about their pumpkin such as: height, weight, width, number of ridges, number of seeds, will your pumpkin sink or float? etc.
The students spent much of their time making and recording their observations. Looking at your pumpkin where are the ridges the deepest? or closest together? How can you tell which side was on the ground while it was growing? Describe the sound your pumpkin makes while tapping on top, middle and bottom. Where did the blossom part of the flower grow? and how do you know? Last but not least does your pumpkin sink or float? Stem up, stem down or on its side? As the students recorded their data they could hardly wait for the part that we all know to be the real tradition of Halloween "Spill Your Guts!"
After all the predictions were made and the actual data recorded it was time to get down to business. With the help of parent volunteers, the pumpkins tops were cut open for the students to observe the inside or GUTS of their pumpkin. Some students dug right in others took a more squeamish approach. Measurements of the meat and skin of the pumpkin were taken. Do the seeds grow in groups or patterns? or are they scattered all around? and finally the real answer to the question every student wanted to know... who's pumpkin would have the most seeds? was it theirs? This year the pumpkin with the most seed, was actually the smallest.
Much was learned from this fun and educational activity and NO Pumpkins were harmed in this activity. They all found happy homes to light the paths for Trick-or-Treaters on Halloween night!

Building a Home
One Nail At A Time

Everyone needs a place to call home.  With the instruction of Mark Leahy, and students from the Building Trades 2 course that is operating out of the Parker Campus, a home will soon become a reality. The Building Trades 2 course is made up of students from our neighboring districts in Livingston county, but most are from Howell. They are embarking on a wonderful community project with Habitat For Humanity. These students will be constructing a house that will someday be someones home. On Friday, October 24th the construction begins with the raising of the walls. If everything goes as planned the home will be completed in late spring.  The timeline set for the students and their instructor is as follows:
  • October-Floor and walls roughed in.
  • November- Trusses and roof dried in (Tar papered
  • December- Trim, drip edge, shingles and soffits closed.
  • January- Styrofoam, house wrap, windows installed and rough mechanical.
  • February- Inspections, insulation and dry walled.
  • March- Mudding and taping dry wall, house primed out.
  • April-Finish trim, cabinets and paint.
  • May-vinyl siding and prepare for house move.
Sometimes the best education come from hand on experiences. These students are getting more than a lesson in construction, they are getting a life lesson in human kindness and the gift of giving back to a community of which they live.
** Positive People will be following the progress of this wonderful project on our web-site with photos, stay tuned.

Everything Is Looking More GREEN at
Northwest Elementary

Northwest is taking giant steps to become a GREEN school. Katie Bogus and her colleague Becky Butte, a 4th grade teacher, are paving the way to help the staff and students understand all the environmentally friendly things they can do to help Northwest become a Green school. They are working with the Abitibi Paper Retriever Company to recycle the schools newspapers and magazines. They are also encouraging Northwest families to recycle their papers in the schools bins as well. But becoming GREEN doesn't stop there. They are also working to include: developing a birdhouse habitat, recycling batteries, establish a CD and DVD recycling program, having an ecological spokesperson vist the school and much more!
Three Cheers for Northwest! GO GREEN!

Three Fires Middle School is Putting
The "S" into STUDY!

Three Fires Middle School is serious about putting the "S" back into studying. It won't matter what the subject, there is time to do your studying.  Starting the second quarter and continuing for the remainder of the school year there will be plenty of opportunities to get caught up on your studies! During lunch time study time will be called "Food For Thought " and after school "The After School Study Den". Students can come into a quiet well supplied room to complete their assignments.  The study area will be operated by Becky Chappel and Sue Wisby, Three Fires Literacy Assistants.  All students will be require a pass from their teacher to enter and get a head start on their class work.  This is defiantly NOT your Parents study Hall!

Hutchings Elementary Receives $500 Grant from Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Grant

Hutchings Elementary School has received a $500 grant from the Exxon Mobil Education Alliance Program. Krystal Stewart, Manager and Beverly Cahill of M-59 Mobil of Howell worked with school officials to
secure the grant which is one of 4,000 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations. The grants were made possible by funding from the Exxon Mobile Corporation.

The school will use the grant money to purchase equipment to enhance their Technology Department.

The Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobile retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. Exxon Mobil believes that, as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of support.

Aspiring messages through "Pay It Forward" activity

Please play video that Hutchings Principal Mr. Clay played at 1st staff meeting of the school year. Truly Inspiring!!!

Hutchings Teacher Lori Ott sends Inspiration Through "Pay It Forward" Message

As explained by Lori Ott to Positive People

Mr.Clay played this video to our staff during our 1st staff meeting at the beginning of the year.  It is very touching, and for those still teaching for the sure joy of teaching and facilitating self-efficacy in our children, then it will surely tug at their heartstrings.  It did mine.  It brought tears to my eyes, because I teach for the kids, they are why I show up to work everyday.  It was heartwarming to hear this young boy, publicly, tell his teachers and other school employees how much they were needed and appreciated.  The one part that nagged at me the most was that of the question, "Do you believe in your colleagues?"  Of course I do, but do they know it?  Do I tell them all daily how wonderful I think they are or how I appreciate them for the things they do for our school or our students, or for me personally?   No, I don't and to be honest, I hardly know some of my co-workers. We share different schedules, lunch, students, grade levels etc.  I immediately knew what I should do. When teaching, every lesson deserves application.  I decided to apply the message that was given to us at our staff meeting.  I grabbed a huge Post It and wrote "I believe in you".....words from my heart to a fellow colleague who teaches first grade:  It went something like this:

Cathy, I believe in you because you instill the "love" of school in our first graders.  (pass it on).

From there it was Cathy's turn to write something aspiring and supportive to another member of our staff and so on. Once a sheet is filled, I post them in the staff lounge so all of our staff can read what we have to say to each other.  It is uplifting! I would really like to see it transferred to the hallways of our building during parent teacher conferences so our parents can see what an inspiring and dedicated staff we have at Hutchings. This "Pay it Forward" activity is not limited to teachers.  It is for all staff, for it truly does take a village to raise a child and "We Believe..."

Hutchings Elementary Student
Raises Awareness for Autism
"It Takes TEAM Work"

Did you know autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States?  Did you know that 1 in 94 boys are on the autism spectrum?  Did you know that more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined?.
For  Nolan, a student at Hutchings, he is very aware of these facts. He is one of the 94 boys that has autism and he is working hard to help raise awareness and a cure for autism.  On Sunday, October 12th Autism Speaks held it's 2nd Southeast Michigan "Walk Now For Autism" awareness event at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Over 8000 walkers with tennis shoes laced raised a little over $350,000. Nolan created a team, "Nolan's Navigators" to walk with him in this 1 mile journey to raise funding for autism research, therapies and awareness. Nolan's team raised $625 to support this cause. "It takes team work, I have a team at home and I have a team at school" Nolan said.  It does take team work to help kids with autism navigate their way through all the wonderful opportunities life has to offer.

"A Day Made Better"
For Third Grade Hutchings Teacher Ms. Benear

Wow!  What an amazing experience I was blessed with October 1, 2008 as I was surprised with a crew from Office Max showing up at my classroom door with flowers, a leather chair and a big orange box full of school supplies.  Some items that our classroom received was a digital camera, set of classroom scissors, markers, crayons, highlighters, glue, pencils, pens, stapler, pencil sharpener and much more!  The focus of this surprise was for Office Max to brighten a classroom's day and give back to teachers who always give so much.  It is so great to see the community reaching out to recognize and support the local teachers.  What a day my students and I experienced, we were so lucky to have received this amazing gift.

Three's The Charm For Highlander Way Middle School

Submitted by: Sandra Moore, Principal

Wow, Highlander Way Middle School is on a roll! They have yet another award to announce . . . looks like three's a charm!

Amy Kilgren, Family and Consumer Science teacher at HWMS, has been recognized as a Michigan Team Nutrition Super Star Winner by Michigan Team Nutrition and the magazine Healthy Habits Today,  published by MSU's Family and Consumer Sciences department.

Mrs. Kilgren was nominated by her fellow Family and Consumer Science teacher Leah Brinker.  Mrs. Brinker wrote the following paragraph in response to the prompt - Tell us about someone at your school or in your district who is a role model for healthy eating and/or physical activity:

Amy is a Family Consumer Science teacher and our school's Health & Wellness committee representative. As our Representative, Amy has attended monthly meetings for the district's Wellness Committee, working to plan and organize activities that promote overall health for Howell staff & students. Beyond her duties as the HWMS representative, she also spent much of her free time promoting wellness in our community. Amy helped to design one of the first Health & Wellness websites for our school district. This website had various types of information on physical fitness & exercise and was designed as a resource for all of our Howell community to utilize. Another project Amy took on was designing and organizing a budget to transform a room at Howell High School into a Health & Wellness Center. This Center is currently open to all HPS community members to use. A third project Amy piloted was the first Health & Wellness Club for students at Highlander Way Middle School. The club was funded through a NIKE Grant that awarded Amy $2,000. Finally, Amy is currently running a staff wellness program here at our school. She has gotten forty teachers to participate in a Wellness Competition called "The Biggest Looser".

Prizes were awarded in one of the three categories, and Mrs. Kilgren received the Super Star Award.

Exciting prizes will be awarded at each of three levels!

  • Super Star Award - One winner in each category (4 total). Winners will receive $50 worth of nutrition education supplies and a 3 X 5 foot custom vinyl, healthy message banner for their school - worth over $100!
  • Shining Star Award - Two winners in each category (8 total). Winners will receive $50 worth of nutrition education supplies for their school.
  • Rising Star Award - Three winners in each category (12 total). Winners will receive a pedometer, a healthy cookbook, nutrition-themed story books for the classroom, or a fruit and vegetable print apron for the classroom.

Congratulations to Amy and our thanks to her for all she's done - and continues to do - to help those around her learn healthy lifestyle habits!

HHS 1963 Class Ring Finds Way To Owner 45 Years Later!

Caroline Dayton Gabel received a phone call from someone that had
found a ring years ago.  The woman had read in the newspaper that the "Class of '63"
was having a reunion and it was her hope that the ring from that class could be
returned to its owner.

The reunion took place and with all the fun and excitement throughout three days,
the owner was not located.

A few weeks later Caroline, her husband Denny, and daughter Debbie,
went to visit Barbara MacDonald Nelson and her husband Jer in Oscoda.
The ladies went on a "mission" to find the owner of the beautiful ring!

After some research, they surprised Marjorie Wright Chinn with a phone call.
Marjorie described the ring perfectly, and yes it was hers!

It seems that Marjorie was dating Jim Duncan, another '63 classmate,
and she had given him her ring.
They had gone to a party and her ring was put on his key chain for safe keeping.
Someone stole the ring.....gone forever or so they thought!

Marjorie was thrilled and remarked, "I never thought I would see the ring again!"

Such a small memory of the past....but now a treasure to cherish once again,
forty-five years later!
