08/12/02 SHOW US THE MONEY! (thedailyenron) The most powerful and feared weapon in the federal arsenal against corporate evildoers remains holstered. Federal asset seizure and forfeiture has been used to all but destroy the US Mafia and is currently crippling the funding of terrorist operations around the world. So then, why are the assets of Ken Lay, Gary Winnick and Bernie Ebbers left unmolested? Good question. Someone should ask the President and his Attorney General.

08/07/02 Administration Undermining New Corp. Reforms GOP Leaders Hobbled by Corp. Taint (thedailyenron) It was less than two weeks ago that President Bush signed the Corporate Responsibility Act into law. The strong set of corporate and accounting reforms were pushed by Democrats and opposed by Republicans - until public opinion swung in favor of the reformers. Forced to support laws opposed by its corporate patrons, the administration has launched a behind-the-scenes attack on the new law through executive branch "interpretations" of its provisions. And, Dick Cheney comes out of hiding today. If he sees his shadow does it mean we have several more months of corporate scandals?

08/05/02 Your Tax Dollars At Work - for Halliburton And, Where's Waldo? (thedailyenron) Would you rehire a contractor who allegedly cheated you on an earlier contract? How about if the contractor overcharged you on the last two contracts? And not peanuts either, but millions of dollars in overcharges. You probably wouldn't. But, that's exactly what the Bush administration has done, giving a Halliburton subsidiary the exclusive contract to provide services to America's frontline, rapid response troops. Meanwhile, Halliburton's former CEO, Vice President Dick Cheney, has all but vanished from public view since reporters want to quiz him about his days at Halliburton's helm.

08/01/02 Bush Enacts and Kills Corporate Reform Law on the Same Day (theangryliberal) "And I watched as he lifted his presidential pen (I assume that anti-rejection drugs were racing through his system, allowing him to actually hold onto the pen and do what passes for work to people like him)"

08/01/02 The Bush corporate corruption double-shuffle (yahoo) The ink on the new law isn't even dry before Bush starts rolling back the whistle-blower protections.

07/31/02 Cheney Missing from Corp. Responsibility Signing Failed Execs Pocketed $3.3 billion in 3 Years (TheDailyEnron) Where's Waldo? He was nowhere in sight at yesterday's "Corporate Responsibility" bill signing, that's for sure. Vice President Cheney retreated to Ohio rather than risk embarrassing comparisons between the new law and his own behavior while CEO of Halliburton. And, if crime doesn't pay, failure sure does. In the first survey of failed US companies, the Financial Times discovered that CEO and other insiders pocketed over $3 billion in just the last three years - and they may be able to keep most of it.

07/30/02 UPDATED: American Family Voices in the News: The Onging Issue of Corporate (and Political) Accountability (TheDailyEnron) Recently, the media has been flooded with stories on corporate corruption and the President's response. We've culled through the files to feature links to some of the best. This page will be updated periodically, so check back to catch the most recent developments.

07/30/02 Bush warning to US boardrooms (BBC) Yeah riiiiight Georgie. Just like you said you would "smoke out" the "evil-doers" and then later said that catching BIn Laden was never a priority. Folks ask you selves this, are things better or worse with little Georg at the helm? Has he made good on anything at all? It seems the only time this administration actually does what is says it will do is when it comes to stripping American Citizens of their rights and turning our republic into a military dictatorship. Not a single one of these corporate crooks has been put behind bars. Not ONE! Wher'es the BEEF George? Now think about that before you go vote in November.

07/29/02 Hush Money for Halliburton? Administration's Economic C-Team (thedailyenron) Cartoonist Gary Trudeau joked last week that someone at Halliburton phoned Cheney. When the VP picked up the phone the raspy-voiced caller recited, "We know what you did last summer..." This week we learn that a controversial Halliburton subsidiary was granted a plumb defense contract. And, this weekend the administration sent Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill out to reassure Americans that, despite what their depleted 401(k) statements say, everything is fine. "The fundamentals are strong," he said. But, the peasants are revolting, Mr. O'Neill. (Yes, they certainly are!)

07/27/02 BUSH-CHENEY WHITE HOUSE OBSTRUCTS HALLIBURTON LAWSUIT (judicialwatch) Process Server Threatened With Jail By White House Security - White House Refuses to Allow Complaint to be Lawfully Served On Vice President Cheney

07/27/02 GOP Feels Heat - Changes Spots New Harken Docs Contradict Bush (thedailyenron) Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan used to talk about his "Pitchfork Brigade," an army of ordinary folks, angry with Washington politicians and ready to do something about it. While they never showed up, a much more potent "401(k) Brigade" did materialize this month - and it scared the bejeepers out of Congress.

07/25/02 Halliburton: Tick, Tick, Tick……Cheney (thedailyenron) Halliburton's Secrets Pose Risks for Cheney Undeterred Bush Pushes Social Security Privatization. Unlike Harken Energy, Halliburton appears to be a fresh crime scene. Fingerprints and DNA litter the place, a fact that must be keeping White House spin doctors spinning in their beds at night. The question in this case is not whether Dick Cheney sold his stock on insider information, but rather how he got the stock in the first place.

07/25/02 Tale of Two Criminals (thedailyenron) DOJ Fiddles While Assets Burn Public Opinion Turning Sour on Economy/White. While former employees, pensioners and investors of America's failed companies struggle to put their lives back together, the people who pillaged their life savings continue living well. Even though the government routinely seizes the assets of suspected drug dealers, no one has laid a hand on the millions of dollars or luxury homes, cars and yachts of the likes of Ken Lay and Jeffery Skilling. Why? House

07/23/02 Halliburton Preparing for 'Confesssion Day' Harken's Very Strange Family Tree (thedailyenron) During the election, Bush and Cheney offered America the opportunity to put two successful business leaders in the White House. Now we learn that success may have been little more than smoke and mirrors. The closer one looks at their two former companies, the less one has to wonder why the stock market falls further each time the administration assures us all will be well. In fact, yesterday the President took a page from Ken Lay's playbook, telling investors now is the time to buy more stock.

07/23/02 AT&T posts $12.7 billion (with a "b") loss (MSNBC) NEW YORK, July 23 — AT&T Corp. posted a $12.7 billion loss for the second-quarter as a better-than-expected operating profit was erased by a huge drop in the market value of cable TV businesses bought for top dollar during the technology bubble.

07/22/02 Calls Mount for Bush, Cheney, to Come Clean House GOP Shelters Offshore Shelters (TheDeaiyEnron) As corporate executives accused of malfeasance find temporary shelter behind the Fifth Amendment, the last thing shaken investors need is the nation's two top cops nuzzling in next to them. Calls are mounting for President Bush and Vice President Cheney to come clean on their previous business dealings. So far, both have refused to do so. And, as the war on terrorism costs taxpayers some $35 billion a year, GOP House members continue to protect corporate offshore tax shelters that cost the US Treasury at least twice that much each year.

07/21/02 Cheney's Dirty Business (monitor) The Bush camp touts Cheney as an icon of statesmanship, but after serving as Secretary of Defense in Bush the Elder's administration and rescuing Kuwait's oil from the clutches of Sadaam Hussein, Cheney went on to become Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton, Inc., an oil drilling firm based in Houston. Halliburton owns the construction firm Brown & Root Services (BRS), a company involved in U.S. intelligence operations in Africa and elsewhere.

07/21/02 Bush was warned of Harken troubles before he sold the stock (AT&T) WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Government records show that President Bush while in private business had confidential information in 1990 about financial problems facing a Texas oil company just months before he sold stock in the firm, The Washington Post reported on Sunday

07/20/02 Court Rules Against Cheney, Bush - In Favor Of Judicial Watch (Rense.com) Discovery To Commence In Weeks. Rules Bush Administration Arguments 'Fly In The Face Of Precedent' Courts Says Bush Administration Puts Forward: 'Mischief' and 'Problematic And Unprecedented Assertion Of Executive Powers'

07/19/02 START OF THE CRASH? (CNN) [description from whatreallyhappened.com] Investors have lost trust in the earnings reports of companies, but they know the balance of trade deficit is real and the national debt is real. Years of government-sanctioned market rigging via the Plunge Protection Team have created a stock market more overvalued than that of 1929 and poised at the brink of a dizzying drop. When it happens, remember that you were warned, but chose to believe those impressive looking numbers on the brokerage report over common sense and the fundamentals of economics. As the bottom falls out, remember that the war didn't create this situation, Osama didn't create it, and even corporate greed isn't the root cause. The US Government mismanaged the nation's economy, opting for short-term, quick-fix, spend-now-and-stick-the-kiddies-with-the-bill policies designed solely around the political needs of the next election cycle.

07/19/02 Two Men Defiant, Angry and in Denial. Where's Waldo? VP Avoids Halliburton Questions (thedailyenron) It was a day of high drama and theater on The Hill yesterday as two men fought for their political lives before separate Congessional committees. One got the boot. The other just got mad. Both expressed outrage over allegations that they did anything wrong - despite mountains of evidence to countrary. And, have you seen Dick Cheney lately?

07/19/02 Trade Deficit Hits Record $37B (washingtonpost) The United States trade deficit ballooned to a record $37.6 billion in May, reflecting Americans' ravenous appetite for foreign-made cars, TVs and clothes. Still think Bush is a good president?

07/18/02 Treasury Secretary caught in stock lie (washingtonpost) Last week, Treasury Secretary Paul H. O'Neill stood before a packed audience at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to address the continuing scandals of corporate irresponsibility, banking on his own history as chief executive of Alcoa Inc. "When I was at Alcoa I never sold a single share of Alcoa stock," he said, repeating a claim he had made on CBS's "Early Show. I wanted my financial success and the company's success inextricably linked. Other executives should do the same." But O'Neill did sell Alcoa stock, 662,547 shares in April 1999 worth nearly $30 million, when he was the company's chairman and chief executive.

07/18/02 Federal Fox Guarding the Sheeple (capitolhillblue) The Justice Department inspector general's office has opened nine formal investigations amid a flurry of complaints of civil rights abuses since President Bush signed broad anti-terror legislation last year, an internal report says

07/16/02 Bush's plan not tough enough to punish corporate crimes (Yahoo News) Probably because all his friends are GUILTY of corperate crimes! --President Bush talked tough on the corporate fraud that seems rampant in America.

07/16/02 More On Bush's Corporate Corruption Speech (Bush WATCH) Sifting through the wealth of responses to the Bush speech, we're surprised that negative criticism is so strong on both sides of the aisle. Nearly everyone was incensed by Bush's flacid response to a very serious domestic crisis that has yet to see the bottom...

07/16/02 Administration Insiders Plagued by Pasts. Cheney and Thompson Behavior Probed (TheDailyEnron) The stock market continues to stagger under the weight of investor fears and uncertainty. The Bush administration's efforts to restore faith in US corporations has so far yielded only suspicion and skepticism. It's no wonder that investors doubt this administration's ability, or even willingness, to tackle executive misbehavior and fraud. The President himself, as well as several other top administration officials are implicated in similar - if not precisely the same - kinds of misbehavior.

07/16/02 No Confidence in Administration's Crackdown. Too Many Tainted by Own Behavior (TheDailyEnron) Police and prosecutors use shady characters in investigations and prosecutions all the time. They like to say that you don't catch sinners by talking to saints. But, it's one thing to use shady characters to catch shady characters and quite another thing to put them in charge of the investigation. That's what the Bush administration is being accused of doing in its war on corporate crime. The administration's top cops have way too much in common with the perps.

07/09/02 President Violates First Rule of Holes In Effort to Save Self, Undermines Reform (the Daily Enron) The White House tried an old debating tactic yesterday - "address and dispose." The idea is to steal your opponent's thunder by addressing his most damaging arguments before he gets a chance to bring them up, and then disposing them.

07/09/02 TV Ads Question Bush/Cheney on Corp. Responsibilty (the Daily Enron) On the day President Bush will address Wall Street, American Family Voices will launch a television advertisement saying Bush and his economic team promising to crackdown on corporate America is like letting the fox guard the henhouse.

07/09/02 VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY SUED PERSONALLY FOR ALLEGED STOCK FRAUD (judicial watch) Judicial Watch, the group that investigates and prosecutes corruption by government officials, announced today that it is filing a shareholders suit in Dallas, Texas, against Vice President Dick Cheney and the other involved directors of Halliburton, as well as Halliburton itself, for alleged fraudulent accounting practices which resulted in the overvaluation of the company’s shares, thereby deceiving investors and others.

07/09/02 Merck Discloses $14 Billion Medco Accounting Problem (Rense.com) NEW YORK (Reuters) - Merck & Co. Inc. MRK.N reported its Medco pharmacy benefits management business booked $14 billion in revenue it never collected, but the drugmaker said on Monday it would go ahead with Medco's planned public offering as early as this week.

07/03/02 SEC promises full investigation into "accounting irregularities" Halliburton (sfgate) The questionable accounting occurred in 1998, when "Vice President" Cheney was chief executive. The company's auditor was the accounting firm Arthur Andersen, which has been under scrutiny for its role in business scandals at Enron Corp. and telecommunications giant WorldCom.

07/03/02 Cooking With Martha: What's Good for The Goose... (thedailyenron) Poor Martha Stewart. During her CBS TV appearance last week all she wanted to talk about are the charms of her cabbage salad. And poor George Bush. All he wanted to talk about yesterday were the charms of married life. Neither was anxious to talk about their mutual insider stock trades. Today Martha decided to spare herself another embarrassing TV appearance and stayed home. The President of the United States does not have that option. He will be asked again about his own 12-year old $848,560.00 insider stock sale.

07/03/02 THE BILDERBERG SYNDROME, Part One (skolnicks report) Every year, for almost half a century, they meet in a different country. Their first meeting was in Holland, in 1954. It was arranged by the Dutch Monarchy. It took place in the Bilderberg Hotel, which became the name of this secret society, one of several, forbidden to be discussed by the oil-soaked, spy-riddled monopoly press.

06/27/02 America's Corporate Meltdown (Rense.com) Corporate America's burgeoning scandals are proving harder for the financial markets to shake off than September's terrorist attacks.

06/27/02 Martha Stewart's Prison Living (common dreams) ..if investigators for the House Energy and Commerce Committee find out that Martha really did have inside information when she sold about 4,000 shares of ImClone stock to escape financial disaster, this is what I imagine: Hello and welcome to "Martha Stewart's Prison Living."

08/07/02 DOJ's Head Fake on Enron Probe Second Bush Company Failure Disclosed (thedailyenron) Hey, look over here, NOT over there!" That's what the Bush Department of Justice appears to be up to as it tiptoes through the political briar patch that is Enron. As the public questions why Adelphia and WorldCom executives have been indicted but no one from Enron has, the DOJ came up with its answer: their investigation has gone global. Well, not all that global, since they appear to be carefully selecting which Enron deals to investigate and which are too politically hot to handle. And, another failed company our MBA President was part of what made the news today.

08/05/02 Offshore Tax Havens Haunt Administration, Enron Execs Remain Free - Why? (thedailyenron) The "do-as-I-say-not-as-I-did" record of top Bush administration officials added a new page yesterday when it was disclosed that Harken Energy had joined other corporate tax evaders offshore during Bush's tenure on its board. And, that Dick Cheney's old company, Halliburton, had done the same thing - over 40 times. Now the Bush administration is working quietly behind the scenes to sabotage international efforts to clamp down on offshore tax havens.

07/22/02 Investment banks helped Enron with secret loans. (yahoo news) WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Major investment banks helped Enron Corp. for years by lending the fallen energy giant billions of dollars via elaborately disguised commodity trades, a congressional panel said on Monday, linking Wall Street more closely to the Enron debacle.

07/22/02 Looks like Citigroup was the investment bank playing funny loan games with Enron. 06/28/02 Bush And The Corporate Crime Wave (thedailyenron) Part of the Solution or Problem? Would you send Jeffery Dahmer to investigate allegations of cannibalism? When President Bush and VP Dick Cheney were private sector businessmen themselves, their behavior was indistinguishable from many corporate evildoers they are now condemning. Ok, don't take my word for it, read on....
