New Prayers for Rangers and Mages

Fantastic new accuracy prayers are now available for rangers and mages! The new prayers boost the accuracy of magical and ranged attacks, equivalent to the 'Reflex' prayers for melee. Only one combat style of prayer can be used at a time, but all of them can be used with the defensive prayers, providing a balance of offense and defence.

Rangers can enjoy the accuracy enhancement of the Sharp Eye, Hawk Eye and Eagle Eye prayers, while mages will find their magical attacks improved by Mystic Lore, Mystic Will and Mystic Might. Not only that, but they are available on our Free-to-play worlds too! Don't delay - visit an ingame altar today!

Charter Ships

Why spend ages walking from one end of the world to the other when you can charter a ship?! Take a cruise with Trader Stan and his crew of fashionably (if uncomfortably) attired sailors. They will carry you from port to port for an affordable fee, and sell you goods available from Port Phasmatys to the far-flung elf lands.

Their ships are docked in many popular places including Catherby, Port Sarim, Mos Le'Harmless, Port Phasmatys and more.

Players wishing to reduce the prices to an even lower rate are advised to prove their sailing credentials, and to use whatever powers of persuasion they can muster.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dragon Axe improved

Until today the dragon axe was only as good at cutting trees as a rune axe. We've now made it slightly better! However we have raised the woodcutting level requirement for chopping trees with this axe to 61.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bugfix for Bone Crossbows

A bug was fixed with the bone crossbow so that it will no longer fire the old pearl and opal tipped bolts. However it can now use bone bolts, all bare metal bolts up to and including iron and also barbed bolts.

22 August 2006 - Naming conventions
Many objects in the game have brackets in their names to indicate a special feature or function, such as Dragon dagger (p) for a poisoned dragon dagger. Some of the letters used in these brackets meant different things on different items. This got a bit confusing in a few cases:
(s) - either "Saradomin" or "poisoned with super-strong weapon poison"
(p) - either "poisoned" or "permanent"
(u) - either "unstrung" or "unlocked"
(g) - either "Guthix" or "gold-trimmed" or "contains a gold coin"

We've renamed a few items so that the letters can be consistent. Please note that the items themselves haven't changed at all. We've just tweaked their names.

Object | Old notation | New notation
Weapon with extra-strong poison | (+) | (p+)
Weapon with super-strong poison | (s) | (p++)
Ring of Charos | (u) = unlocked | (a) = activated
Permanent serum from Shades of Mort'ton Serum 207 (p) | Serum 208
Blackjack | (a) = assault | (o) = offensive
Special beer from Recipe for Disaster | Asgarnian Ale (g) | Asgoldian Ale

---Prayer book pages---
Torn page (s) | Saradomin Page
Torn page (z) | Zamorak Page
Torn page (g) | Guthix Page
Please note - Some of these changes have already been in the game for a while.

Since your dealings with Glough and the plot to destroy the Grand Tree, things have been pretty quiet in the gnome world, save the odd escaped Terrorbird or drunken barbarian. Brimstail's not been lazing about though, oh no. He's found a strange machine, built by Oaknock the Engineer during the Golden Age of the Gnome which took place hundreds of years ago. What does the weird device do? Why on RuneScape was it built? What other secrets does it hold?

Agreeing to help fix this mechanical marvel is bound to be the easy part of this plot-rich, history filled quest, where an enquiring mind and an aptitude for puzzles are a must. You'll even get to see some of the most glorious moments of gnomic military strategy!

Can you uncover the new threat (or is it an old one?) to gnome security? Rewards include a useful little crystal tool, which we are sure the constructors out there will enjoy.

Gnome Cuisine is well known all over RuneScape for its unusual ingredients and unique flavours. Toad Battas G™ and Worm Crunchies G™ are two of the more popular dishes that most humans turn their noses up at, but for travel-worn gnomes a long way from the Grand Tree, gnomish foods are a sweet taste of home. For too long has the art of gnomish cooking been neglected!

Visitors to the Gnome Stronghold will find a refurbished restaurant area, with new improved recipes (including improved XP and a more streamlined cooking process) for all the gnome foods and cocktails.

Aluft Gianne's entrepreneurial son Aluft jnr. has also set up a new Gnome food delivery business right next to his dad's restaurant. Once trained you will be asked to make and deliver gnome foods to gnomes all over the world. But don't take too long, time is of the essence! After a more challenging delivery, you may find your customers are so pleased that they will give you an extra special tip - maybe some new gnomish explorer's equipment, or standard issue gnome pilot's clothing.

Particularly hard-working cooks and delivery adventurers will also find they are able to call on the delivery service themselves, for even the hardiest of warriors needs a good old helping of gnome cooking from time to time.

(Some lower lvl cooks will find many of the requirements for cooking gnomic cuisine have been raised to support the new amounts of experience points gained.)

There's no place like gnome.

7 August 2006 - Gnome Cuisine
Welcome to the Behind the Scenes – August edition!

For many of us, August brings sun, holidays, cheap souvenirs and sunburn… but in RuneScape it’s a whole different story! So, in no particular order….

Gnomes on holiday often miss the sweet taste of home - so it's up to you to bring it to them all wrapped up in a gnome delivery bag! Players who have visited Aluft Gianne’s restaurant in the Grand Tree may have offered to help out with orders in the past, but just keeping the restaurant in stock of worm battas and fruit blasts is hardly a challenge for today’s gliding, spirit tree hopping adventurers. So, in August, why not help out with Aluft Junior's Gnomic delivery service? Make the stuff and trek over the world delivering this, erm, “Gnourmet” food and you’ll find you are rewarded with some very interesting gear as well as some vastly improved XP for the actual cooking. If you’re really good, you may be able to get fresh gnome cuisine delivered to you!

Also in the gnome kingdom this month, we dig deep into gnomic history after the discovery of a strange old machine from the era of King Healthorg the Great, whose glittering reign preceded that of King Narnode Shareem. What is its purpose and why didn’t anyone notice it before? What secrets can be unearthed, and will all the gnomes appreciate a human nosing about again? Only time will tell…..

Later this month we release a new batch of prayers, this time adding the ability to temporarily boost your ranged and magic attacks with prayers like “Hawk Eye” and “Mystic Law”. All these new additions will match the existing attack and strength boosting prayers.

In addition to all the above, we also bring you the new sailing transport system. Many of RuneScape’s ports will be connected via a network of high quality sailing vessels. Although the initial cost can be quite heavy, players familiar with piratical ways and those handy in the art of persuasion will find it a lot easier on the wallet. The crew members will no doubt be able to sell you a few choice goods from their travels, so keep a look out for them too.

And finally for the month of August, the Dragons, Giants and Demons have all been at the rehab clinic for the last few months getting a well deserved makeover. Gone will be the flabby bellies and dull claws of the past… we will be saying goodbye to weak-limbed, flailing attacks and hello to the sparkling-eyed, razor-sharp, meaty new look of the future! Demons who actually look like they could destroy you from a badly-directed sneeze are far more fun to fight than ones that, well, don’t. Dragons that swagger as they walk and moss giants with beards that actually are alive are just a few of the magnificent changes we will be making. Don’t worry! We won’t make them tougher.

Enjoy!

1 August 2006 - Postbag from the Hedge
The July edition of Postbag from the Hedge has arrived at last!

31 July 2006 - Crossbows
Fletchers and rangers are treated to a huge expansion to crossbows today. Use your Fletching, Smithing and Crafting skills to make yourself up to seven new crossbows and even more bolts. Tip your metal bolts with gems and use your magical abilities to enchant them for some pretty spectacular effects for combat against both monsters and other players.

You can also smith yourself a grappling hook to make getting around that little bit easier - with a rope attached you can scale walls, cross rivers and climb cliffs if you have the agility and strength to do so.

Take a look at our Knowledge Base for specific information and talk to Hirko, Hura and Holoy, the crossbow salesdwarves who are located in Keldagrim, the pub under White Wolf Mountain and the Dwarven Mine. Hirko even has a useful way of storing all your new bolts so they don't take up too much of your precious bank space - for a price of course!

If you've completed the Knight's Sword quest you also have the option of Smithing yourself a beautiful blurite crossbow and bolts. Please note that blurite items and enchanted bolts are not tradeable.

24 July 2006 - Lunar Diplomacy
This week we bring you an epic quest of gargantuan proportions!

In the distant lands of the north-west, a mysterious clan has been living far away from the other inhabitants of RuneScape. Frequent travellers to the Fremennik lands might recognize their name... They're the mysterious Moon Clan; a magical race that use their unbelievable grasp of the mystical arts in everyday activities. If it can be done using magic, the Moon Clan know a way! Daily tasks such as travelling to distant lands, tending to plants and baking pies are all much more fun when you can sit back while magic does all the work for you!

Be prepared to explore a huge island of activities, visit your own dreams, conquer magical monsters, find another source of rune essence, unlock a whole new type of rune, be given a spell book of unique and exciting spells, gain experience in magic and Runecrafting, wear special Lunar clothes, discover a new type of staff, play a variety of mini-games and so much more you may never want to leave the island of all things magical!

What would cause you to visit such an island (other than the superb treats on offer)? Well, the Moon Clan are the not too distant cousins of the Fremenniks - a race whose distaste for magic is well known. Despite their linked bloodlines, they've been in vicious conflict since before anyone can remember. It must be time for an adventurer to brave this world of magic and bring back the hope of a peace by conducting some Lunar Diplomacy... all the while sailing on a boat full of Fremennik pirates! Arrrr, that it be!

So, go and visit Lunar Isle today by chatting to the crew of the Lady Zay, the largest ship yet to grace the Rellekkan Seas.

It's magic.

17 July 2006 - Pyramid Plunder
Isn't it frustrating when tomb raiders keep stealing your treasure and smashing up all your urns? No? Well, if you were a thousand year old mummy charged with looking after a tomb, you'd be frustrated. Believe us. In fact, there is one Mummy in Sophanem who became so angered by the pesky thieves that he adapted part of his tomb to cater for them. If he can keep them busy, then maybe they will leave him and the King's treasures alone!

In this thieving minigame, players have a limited time to pick through tombs, sarcophagi and urns, dodging venomous asps, scarabs and even a few mummies. Confident thieves can try to find their way to the higher floors where the rewards and risks are greater... The particularly light-fingered may also find the King's sceptre - this regal item will aid the frequent pyramid visitor in their travels.

To start this game, make your way to Sophanem, and investigate the northern pyramid. Tarik will tell you some of the mysteries of the pyramid if you wish to prepare for dangers within. Then you will have to solve the Mummy's first small puzzle: which of the mysterious doors marks the way in?

11 July 2006 - Fairy Tale II - Cure a Queen
The Fairy Queen should be awake and back in charge of the Lost City by now, but what is happening in Zanaris? Why hasn't the Fairy Godfather abdicated the throne? What is happening to all the fairy inhabitants and where has Fairy Nuff gone? Can you rise to the challenge of using the Fairyrings to search the other planes and Cure the Queen in the second part of the Fairy Tale trilogy?

In this week's new quest, the player will unlock the magic of the Fairyrings, giving them access to the biggest transport network in the game so far. Pay attention to what you're doing though, it's very easy to get confused if you're not careful! We recommend you take a few teleport spells with you, just in case. Several of the rings are actually situated in other extra-planar dimensions, just like Zanaris, so be prepared for a few surprises along the way.

Players who succeed in Fairy Tale Part II will be rewarded with thieving and herblore XP, as well as a chunk of XP in any skill of their choice. More importantly though, they will be one step closer to receiving that elusive reward that Martin the Master Gardener promised so long ago...

We'll be releasing a Knowledge Base guide to the Fairyrings in a few days, to give you time to explore them for yourself, and fully enjoy the randomness of fairy magic

4 July 2006 - Security and free-to-play update - the Stronghold of Security
Why not learn how to keep your account secure whilst having fun in game? Now all of our players can, be they members or free players, level 3 to 126. When the Barbarians moved their mining operations to the centre of the village, little did they know that they would unearth the strangest dungeon yet encountered in RuneScape. Haunted by lost spirits which seem to have taken over the doors and infested with beasts never seen before, it makes an adventure and a half simply getting through each of the four levels.

The doors in the area will ask you questions about account security, and the best ways to make your account safe, such as using recovery questions. Take your time to think about the questions they ask and the answers available, and you’ll get through the dungeon in no time at all. Remember their advice, and you can learn a thing or two on the way. After all, secure accounts are the best kind of accounts!

You can find out more about it by picking up a book in your local general store and investigating the first part of the dungeon thoroughly. As well as some new creatures and talking doors you might also pick yourself up a reward or two! Plunder the treasures of the Stronghold of Security to find new boots, a new sceptre, 4 new emotes and a whole heap of golden shiny things. Be aware that like any other dungeon with monsters, if you die you WILL lose your equipment, so come prepared for combat.

4 July 2006 - Trouble Brewing
The gates of Mos Le'Harmless have been thrown open!

Players can now explore the whole of the island, and participate in the new minigame, Trouble Brewing. Join a team of brave, bold, and fireproof pirates to brew some bootleg "rum" for fun and profit. Train firemaking and cooking the pirate way! Douse burning pipes with water! Boil flowers for colouring! Get monkeys to fetch nuts from high branches! Rewards on offer include a staggering array of pirate clothing, and for the most dedicated players there are several pirate flags to be had. Players looking to make more of their own brewing will also be interested in one of the other potential rewards, which can help dramatically with your mature ales.

Even Pirates need instructions occasionally, so all the activities and tips on how to play the game are recorded in a helpful manual in game, along with an excellent Knowledge Base report.

Slayer masters have also been informed of the dangerous creatures that roam the island, and will now send players that can access the island after Cave Horrors. Be sure to take a Witchwood Icon and a light with you if you go after these howling beasts, since they're as dangerous as they are ugly. Players that train Slayer might be interested in the masks they wear, as they provide a nice attack bonus when on a slayer task.

We've also released a new random event this month. One of the Camelot beekeepers has a problem - his old beehives have stood around for a long time and they are starting to fall apart. Help him to reassemble the beehives, before you get stung and have to dive into a stream to escape the angry swarm! Bee careful not to get stung...

3 July 2006 - Behind the Scenes - July
Another amazing month awaits those noble rune-clad, hide-wearing, spell-firing, house-building and cat-chasing adventurers. In July we visit the Moon Clan, find out what happened to the Fairy Queen, raid pyramids, unlock a whole new spell list, craft a new range of crossbows and bolts, and use magic fairy rings to teleport about the map.

The observant eagle-eyed players out there (so that’s all of you) will have noticed that some of the updates mentioned in the June “Behind the Scenes” have not yet been released into the game. Don’t worry! We will be releasing those in July too. If you’re unsure what they are, look over the last few paragraphs in last month's edition of Behind the Scenes.

Back in Zanaris, the fairies wait patiently to find out how the Fairy Queen is after her struggle with the Tanglefoot beast. Strangely, the Fairy Godfather and his boys don’t seem in that big a rush to return her to the throne. Perhaps it’s because they are genuinely worried about her health… or perhaps they decided it was time to move in on a more permanent basis.

Players who decide to get involved with helping the Fairy Queen will need to harness the power of the fairy rings. These fungal arrangements will be popping up all over the place, so have fun experimenting to see what takes you where!

Isn’t it frustrating when keen tomb raiders keep stealing your treasure and smashing up all your urns? No? Well, if you were a thousand year old mummy charged with looking after a tomb, you’d be frustrated. Believe us. In fact, there is one Mummy in Sophanem who became so angered by the pesky thieves that he adapted part of his tomb to cater for them. If he can keep them busy, then maybe they will leave him alone! Players have a limited time to pick through tombs, sarcophagi and urns, dodging venomous asps, scarabs and much more. Particularly confident thieves can try to find their way to the higher floors where the rewards are greater AND rarer... but the risks are higher.

The Rellekkans have always bad-mouthed the Moon Clan, but later this month we give you the chance to make up your own mind about this mysterious matriarchal group. New ships dock at the port regularly, but the “Lady Zay” is definitely the most impressive ship ever to visit, and rumour has it that the crew buys runes from this ostracized tribe. What secrets wait across the stormy waters? You will just have to wait and see. Anyone who is actually accepted by the Moon Clan is bound to get some intriguing rewards. Maybe even access to a special set of spells to make mundane tasks a bit more... magical.

Finally, the dulcet sound of twanging crossbows will once again ring true across the lush fields of, well, everywhere! Crossbows have been considered the runt of the projectile family for a while now, so we’ve added a brand new range of crossbows and enchantable bolts, all of which you can make yourself! The “arm” of the crossbow is also created using the smithing skill, so blacksmiths will find use in this update too.

There are more readers' letters this month too, with another rambling reply from the chaos elemental as well as the normal tomfoolery, so get ready to get cryptic.

We hope that little lot keeps you busy... It certainly did for us.

Easy Pocket Change - New Guide
There's a new Easy Pocket Change Guide in the guide section, thanks to Gunrise!

Check it out!

Tweaks and Bugfixes
This week's update focuses entirely on fixing some of the new features we have added to the game recently. Obviously we try and keep our updates bug free, but just like those pesky shrimp, a few slip through the net, so we have been busy hunting down some of the more obscure issues and correcting them. After all, improving and fixing existing updates is just as important as releasing new ones.

We're also working hard on making July a really impressive month, packed with minigames, new spells and some rather interesting quests. We're sure you won't be disappointed.

Projects mentioned in June's Behind the Scenes article but not yet released (such as the brewing minigame and the non-members' security update) have been delayed for a little extra testing, but worry not, as we'll make them available next month instead. And that's in addition to all the stuff we already had planned for July...
