------------ Sunday, May o4, 2008 I'm so sorry to everyone for insane hiatus. If you study music (no, I'm not in college, not in high school...just a little violinist/pianist person in seventh grade), then you know that spring is an insane season. It started on March 1st, and today I had violin junior honors and a piano competition. Agh. The angst. And here I am, pretending to work on Language Arts HW... But that's no excuse, I know. I'm sorry. I'm becoming an wikiholic. Anyways: The Golden Compass DVD has been released on Blu-ray and DVD, you have the choice of purchasing a 1-disc edition or a 2-disc "special" edition. Surfing bridgetothestars to update myself, I also saw that Pullman's son was married in a full Catholic ceremony. Sorry, I can't check the truthfulness of that. Tuesday, February 26, 2008 Celebration!! The Golden Compass Movie won an Oscar award for best Visual Effects. Well deserved, I'll say. Click here for more info, as well as a link to a video. I can't believe I'm actually wasting time to update this little site today, I have my midterm algebra exams tomorrow (gasp!). Anyways, here's what I dug up: Philip Pullman: new brand of environmentalism. (Full article HERE). Andrew Simms, policy director of the New Economics Foundation, interviews Philip Pullman. It's a three-page, very fascinating and down-to-earth clip. I had a lot of fun reading it. "Climate change, say the pessimists, will destroy our world. But in an exclusive interview, acclaimed author Philip Pullman champions a new brand of environmentalism that offers us all hope. Andrew Simms: Environmentalists must engage people if there is to be a mass shift to lifestyles that do not cost the earth." {READ MORE}. Despite disappointments throughout North American, the film has been doing rather well in Europe. Japan has yet to release the movie. It will come out there on 1 March. The original article can be read {HERE}. While I was flipping through model fansite bridgetothestars.net to catch up, I also discovered a surprisingly harsh critical review on the Golden Compass. The Vatican newspaper, l’Osservatore Romano described Pullman and the film adaptation of TGC as "hopeless", saying that "In Pullman's world, hope simply does not exist, because there is no salvation but only personal, individualistic capacity to control the situation and dominate events". The lengthy editorial added that the movie was "the most anti-Christmas film possible" and said that it was "consoling" that its first weekend ticket sales were a disappointing $26 million". I, as a devoted Golden Compass fan, was understandably infuriated. The full Reuters article can be read {HERE} (Oh, and sorry--I can't remove the blue bar on the bottom. It's automatically there). The author of the book on which the new film The Golden Compass is based has hit back at critics who accuse him of peddling "candy-coated atheism". Philip Pullman dismissed as "absolute rubbish" accusations by the US-based Catholic League that the film promotes atheism and denigrates Christianity. "I am a story teller," he said. " If I wanted to send a message I would have written a sermon."You can read more at the BBC news site by clicking THIS LINK . |
