AJAY BAINES NAMED ADMIRALS’ AMERICAN SPECIALTY/AHL MAN OF THE YEAR
NORFOLK, VA – The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that Ajay Baines has been named the Admirals’ winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the Hampton Roads community and charitable organizations during the 2004-05 season.
For the third consecutive season, Baines was named the Admirals’ Captain for his leadership both on and off the ice. Despite any physical challenges he faces as a diabetic, he has continued to be a role model for the youth in the community living with diabetes. His message has been to not accept limitations and to not give up on ones goals.
This year, Baines expanded on that positive image of individual goals through the introduction of the “Going for Goals” Admirals Literacy Program. He adopted Indian River Middle School in Chesapeake, VA, to encourage students to read. To that end, the six-year pro paid visits to the school and was featured in a poster along with student athletes for the City of Chesapeake Library. For the second time this season, on April 15th, Baines will honor students with certificates of achievement before Norfolk’s game.
Baines is now one of 28 finalists for the 2004-05 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
