Doom training centre

Hey guys,
              I decided to have a seperate section for DOOM ports, rather than putting them into the conversion section. A "port" is basically a fan made version of the game that may, or may not, have many different features to the original, i will try and cover all of them.

JDOOM is an excellent port of DOOM featuring true 3d, opengl support, and a variety of other features (not to mention optional 3d models to replace the old 2d sprites!). I love this port, it keeps the core gaming experience that we all know and love while giving the game a face lift. Also supports Heretic and Hexen. Legacy is another excellent conversion of DOOM. It supports 3dfx/opengl and is very player orientated with an "original game" option for the old schoolers. The best thing here is a split screen mode! Frag your friend on the one computer! Get it here http://legacy.newdoom.com/

Odamex is an online port that aims to provide DOOM online play as it was meant to be (with CTF!). It is in its early stages but is already a real contender. Best of all, it is open source, so the project is developed at quite a pace. Check it out!

Skulltag is the other main port of online DOOM play, created by Carnevil. It is very good, has many features, but is more suited for new school players as there are a ton of additions to the game, not to mention new game modes which are alot of fun. The reason that i do not give it top marks is that i feel it is still not as accessible as Zdaemon and the community is not as fully developed (although in time i'm sure this will change). Many in the online DOOM community feel you have to like one or the other, but this is nonsense, there is more than enough space for both as they provide different gaming experiences. Many players have both installed and if they can't get a game on one, they will go to the other. In the end, Skulltag is an excellent port and if you are interested in new additions to DOOM, look no further! If i had to take one port of DOOM to a deserted island, it would be Zdaemon. It has everything, it is THE best online experience as far as i'm concerened and has a fantastic development team. When installed, Zdaemon will allow you to jump in to all manner of game modes, it is easy to use, and is pretty flawless in execution. You can also play as much singleplayer as you like. The game supports a massive amount of custimisation allowing for both old and new school gaming.What more can i say, the weapon of choice! Get it here http://www.zdaemon.org

ZDOOM sparked a revelation in DOOM related gaming. It is a complete conversion of DOOM to the Windows platform, however, it goes far in advance of anything that DOOM95 could dream. Created by Randy Heit, new features and support issues are added often. This is the engine that Zdaemon was born out of. ZDOOM is still valid on its own however as Zdaemon is based on an earlier version. Get it here http://zdoom.org
