Terry Boys' Soccer

A new day. A new beginning.

The 2008 Terry Bulldogs Boys' Soccer team come into this season with great expectations.    Last year's team finished with an overall record of 7-9-2.  Although the Bulldogs fell short of a winning season, there was a competitive spirit seen in the team unlike any other.  The season was highlighted with a Division 6-5A championship, the first in four years.  Jamie Hardy and Wes Price signed soccer scholarships to Delta State University and Holmes Community College respectively.  Wes was also named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches South All-Star Team.  Ryan Weaver played alongside teammate Rashun Dixon in the prestigious Max Emfinger All-American Football Classic.  The Bulldogs will be led this year by senior captains Drew Hille and J.T. Coward.  The team is poised to make a run at the 5A State Championship.

Coach K. Orr brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Bulldogs' soccer team.  He was one of the first four-year letterwinners as a member of the Murrah Mustangs team from 1991-1994.  In 1991, he won the Best Defensive Player Award as a defender and in 1994 won the 100 Percent Award.  The Mustang Soccer team made the state playoffs in 1992 and 1994.  Coach Orr also helped guide the Mustangs to a 9-9 record as an assistant coach in 1999.  In 2006, he assisted Don Regan and helped lead the Terry Bulldogs to a 12-9-1 record and the quarterfinals of the 5A State Tournament.  After being named the Bulldogs' head coach in 2007, Coach Orr led them to the Division 6-5A championship.  Coach Orr also lead the Terry Tennis Team to its first ever Division 6-5A team championship and its first winning season in a number of years.

News

The Crystal Springs match has been placed back on the schedule.  It is set for Thursday, Jan. 8, at THS Stadium.  It will be a double-header with the girls set to play at 5:30 and the boys set to play at 7:00.  We have been assigned concession stand duties for this game.  Parents, you are urged to come out and support your young men and contribute financially to the Terry Soccer Club.

The Pearl Tournament brackets have been set for this weekend.  On Friday, Jan. 9, the Bulldogs will take on the St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws at Millsaps College 6:40 p.m.  On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Bulldogs will take on the Harrison Central Red Rebels at Newell Field at 10:40 a.m. and will take on the Pascagoula Panthers at Newell Field at 5:20 p.m. as well.  The times are unavailable at this time.  I will place on the site tomorrow.

The St. Joe game originally rescheduled for Jan. 8 has been postponed until further notice.  There is a district scheduling conflict with St. Joe.  There is a possibility that the game will be played next Thursday at Terry.

Last Saturday, the Terry Boys' and Girls' Soccer teams hosted alumni games which brought back some of Terry's best former soccer players.  The girls' roster included All-Division defenders Barbara Dotson and Emily Leverette.  The boys' roster was stacked with All-State players Wes Price and Jess Shelby and All-Division players Jared Upchurch and Ryan Weaver just to name a few.  The alumni ladies had somewhat of a difficult time keeping up with the 08-09 Lady Bulldogs.  The current Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 6-0 victory.  Things were a little bit different on the boys' side.  The 08-09 Bulldogs did come out with a 3-2 victory, but it didn't come easily.  The alumni guys were bigger and stronger and unbelievably didn't appear to be too rusty.  Scoring goals for the 08-09 Dawgs were Bryson Wright, Drew Hille, and Kyle Upchurch with the game winner.

Congratulations go to co-captains Tyler Catchot and Drew Hille.  On December 19, they both signed soccer scholarships with Holmes Community College were they will join former Terry Bulldog, Wes Price and Coach Orr's brother, Mac.

The Jan. 20th match against Jim Hill will be played at Hughes Field in Jackson and is a scheduled double-header.

The make-up match with Vicksburg will be played Thursday, Jan. 22 at Vicksburg High School and is also a scheduled double-header.

Be sure to check out The Natchez Democrat newspaper's website to see the story about last weekend's match against Natchez.  A picture of Tommy Avant is featured along with the story.  The address is natchezdemocrat.com.

The playoff match is set for Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7:00.  The Dawgs and Lady Dawgs will take on Harrison Central.  Parents, you are strongly encouraged to come out and support the teams.

The season-ending banquet is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Hillcrest Baptist Church at 6 p.m.

Congratulations go to Senior Drew Hille for being named to the 2009 Mississippi Association of Coaches South All-Star Soccer Team.  He is the second Bulldog in the last two years to be named to the team (Wes Price- 2008).  The game will be played in June at Hinds Community College.

The Players

13 Drew Hille  Senior midfielder- Possesses all the skills to make it to the next level.  Drew has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.    Will play anywhere on the field.  Has started games at sweeper, stopper, center mid, and forward.  Possesses a deft touch, great ball control, great speed, and a winner's attitude.  Has had success playing at the rec. and select levels.  Was a 1st Team All Division 6-5A selection, won the Best Offensive Player award, and was the Most Valuable Player for 2008.  Also a member of the 2007 4A South State Championship baseball team.

1 J.T. Coward  Senior midfielder/defender- Has improved his game after posting a wonderful club season with SW Jackson.  Possesses  great size, a strong leg, and a great attitude.  J.T. is another versatile player that can be used at any spot on the field.  Started at keeper in the 2nd round of the 4A State Playoffs in 2007and surprisingly left a great mark on the field as a defender in the first round of the 5A State Playoffs in 2008.  The toughest part is trying to figure out where he needs to be on the field because he will do a great job anywhere.  Was a 1st Team All-Division 6-5A selection.  Member of the 2007 4A South State Championship baseball team.

7 Tyler Catchot  Senior keeper- One of the most underrated keepers in the state because of his ability to make very athletic saves to keep Terry in close matches.  Tyler has improved his skills at surveying the whole field to be a safety net for his defenders and to start quick counters on throws.  He started every match in 2008 and was a 1st team All-Division 6-5A selection.  Started 23 of 24 matches in 2007.  Missed one due to illness.  Continues to improve basic skills and toughness everyday.  Also a member of the 2007 4A South State Championship baseball team and unbelievably is an accomplished tennis player.

10 Bryson Wright  Senior forward- A driven soccer player that can break a game wide open with his play.  In 2008, Bryson finished second in scoring with 17 goals.  Scored a team high 22 goals and scored 2 goals in 2007's historic playoff victory against Long Beach.  Bryson possesses great size, speed, physicality, and a knack for scoring.  Looking forward to Bryson improving upon the great season he had last year.  Was a member of the 2006 Division 6-4A Championship football team and started as a doubles specialist  with the tennis team.

11 Justin Bailey  Senior defender- Has really stepped up this year at defender.    Possesses great ball control, recovery speed, and a player's mentality.  Enjoyed success with his SW Jackson club team.  Justin can quietly shut an offensive player down and can open up counters with his ball control.

2 Kyle Upchurch  Junior midfielder- Not so "Lil' Up" anymore.  Has grown about 5 inches since last year which was all he really needed to add to his already great ability.  Kyle possesses great ball control, a powerful and accurate shot, and the ability to create scoring opportunities from any midfield spot on the field.  Looking forward to Kyle being one of the difference makers in the second half of the season.  In addition to his on-field exploits, he is a great student and possesses a great attitude.

6 Ken Delaughter  Junior defender- Ken has steadily improved his game over the course of two years and has made his mark as a central defender and a vocal leader of the team. As he has grown physically, he's added speed and the toughness needed to be successful at the high school level.  Possesses good ball handling skills and will be called upon to start counters from the back.  Had a great club season with SW Jackson.

12 Kyle Delong  Junior defender- Possesses great skill and the toughness needed to compete with some of the best teams in the state.  Kyle is also willing to play any spot on the field.  Has seen action at midfielder, forward, and defender.  Will eventually get a shot in the goal as a keeper.  Also a member of the 2007 4A South State Championship baseball team.

4 Torleone Dismuke  Junior midfielder/forward- Having Torleone back has been a tremendous blessing.  Torleone combines good soccer skills with blazing speed and a knack for scoring.  He showed that knack by heading home the game winner in the first match against Ridgeland and then exploded versus Crystal Springs by charting the lone hat trick of the year.  Started at cornerback for the football team.

5 Jarmarion "JJ" Jenkins  Junior midfielder/forward- One of our transfer players.  JJ comes from Wingfield and brings tremendous upside to the team.  Despite being arguably the fastest player on the team, he is one of the smartest players carrying a GPA of over 3.5.  He continues to improve his game daily and is always willing and ready to play anywhere.  Has seen action in the majority of our matches and even scored against his old team.  Played wide receiver for the football team.

3 Keith Milsap  Junior defender- A great addition to the team who combines the size, physicality, and soccer skills to be successful at the 5A level.  Has started the majority of the matches this season and will continue to see action at the stopper and center back positions.  Scored a goal this season and started at linebacker and place kicker for the football team.

9 Jacob Abbey  Sophomore defender/midfielder- Probably the most improved player on the team.  Has gone from a sometimes timid player to a tough, vocal leader.  Jacob has grown mentally and physically since the 8th grade, and it's always a pleasure watching him play.  Has improved his ball handling and defensive skills.  Right now, he's primarily used as a JV starter but will make the transition to varsity very quickly.  Always a dedicated and spirited player.

23 Kyle Hickman  Sophomore midfielder- Continues to improve his game everyday.  Kyle possesses a great soccer sense and will get better as he continues to play.  Also an accomplished tennis player.

25 Kent Milsap  Sophomore midfielder/forward- The complete package.  Possesses great ball handling skills, speed, and physicality.  The one attribute that separates him from lots of Mississippi soccer players is his throw-in.  Can easily throw the ball approximately 40 yards.  Kent will be a force on the JV and varsity squads.  Kent has created scoring opportunities and will eventually be placed on the stat sheet as a multiple goal scorer.  Has perhaps the brightest future of all freshmen.

30 Zack Savell  Sophomore midfielder/defender- Zack is a two-year member of the Bulldog soccer team.  Possesses great speed and toughness.  Model team player who will play anywhere and exemplify a great attitude.

19 Jared Bailey  Freshman defender- Natural left footed player.  Has natural ability.  Skills will improve as he continues to play.  Always plays hard and can make a great defensive play at any time.  Brother of Justin Bailey.

24 Tyler Weaver  Freshman midfielder/defender- Will primarily be used at stopper with the JV team.  Loves to play the game and can be used as a defender when needed.  Brother of Ryan Weaver.

28 Tommy Avant  Freshman midfielder- No one could have imagined the impact Tommy would have after returning from a severe injury.  He has started every game at either midfielder or stopper and scored goals in the process.  Was one of the sparkplugs in the showdown with Madison Central which resulted in a controversial 1-0 loss.  Combines great athleticism with unbelievable soccer skills to be one of the feature players of the team.  Will only get better for this is his freshman season.

20 Harlan Davis  Freshman defender- One of the fresh new faces for the Bulldogs.  Harlan has great size and continues to improve his overall game every day.  Harlan has started 2 JV matches and has seen action in some of the varsity matches.  Brother of Lady Dawgs senior Alexis Davis.

17 Colin Dinger  Freshman defender- Colin is one tough soccer player.  Has seen action in some of the varsity matches.  He possess a strong leg and blazing recovery speed.  As his overall game continues, look forward to seeing him in more varsity matches.

31 Kevin Mullen  Freshman forward/midfield- Transfer player from Hillcrest.  Kevin possesses great speed and footskills.  He is a natural left footed player who can play from any offensive position on the field.  Looking forward to Kevin becoming a star player in the future.

22 A. J. Arnold  8th grade forward- One of the most promising soccer players that will ever come through Terry.  A. J. combines great athletic ability with great footskills and the mindset to be successful at the state's top level.  He has started every match and continues to get better and better as the year progresses.  What is so scary, especially for Terry's opponents, is that A. J. is just in the 8th.

14 Cole Jeavons  8th grade midfielder- Cole is a solid 8th grader who when he develops will progress into the mix as a full time varsity player.  Cole has shown amazing upside as a midfielder.  He started in the JV matches and scored 2 goals in varsity matches against Crystal Springs and Wingfield.
