"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." --Martin Luther King
This web site was prompted by the more than 1,500 individuals who have been held in prison, frequently in solitary confinement, sometimes with no charges brought against them, and almost always based upon supposed Secret Evidence. One case in particular disturbs us, that of Dr. Sami Al-Arian, a pillar of the community, who we have worked beside for several years in our efforts for justice and community health. Dr. Al-Arian was fired and imprisoned, as Peter Erlinder notes, for Thought Crimes (see 1984). He has been accused of no crimes, only of contributing to Palestinian charities, which were later defined as Terrorist. Despite this, he has spent over two years in jail, mostly in solitary confinement in the SHU (Special Housing Unit) at Coleman Federal Penitentiary. The SHU is reserved for convicted criminals who cannot be kept from harming guards or other criminals, yet even they are released after a short time. Dr. Al-Arian spent most of two years in these conditions, despite not having been convicted of any crimes.
The fact that almost all of those imprisoned are Arab and/or Muslim indicates that we have returned to the extreme racial/ethnic discrimination that characterized America in earlier days. Some historical examples of such discrimination include: the Japanese during World War II, the African-Americans until the mid 1960s, and many other groups during other times, including, but not limited to: American Indians, Irish, Polish, Germans, Italians, Hispanics, Chinese, etc., etc...
We call for equal justice for all, as our Constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties are being sacrificed at the altar of national security.
