Sharapova Video Game

Maria Sharapova has signed an exclusive deal with Mobile Phone Games company I-play, according to www.gamesindutry.biz & www.mariaworld.net

"Tennis is a sport that everyone should be able to enjoy across any format, and by using my name in a mobile gaming context, I hope that tennis fans will be able to share my passion, whatever the weather or conditions of play," said Sharapova.

"As part of our drive to create mobile games for everyone, we are very pleased to bring an athlete of huge, global appeal like Maria Sharapova to mobile gaming. The game will be simple to play but difficult to master, just like tennis itself, and we are very much looking forward to working with our distribution partners as well as other Maria Sharapova marketing partners to bring it to as wide an audience as possible," said Paul Maglione, Senior Vice President of Publishing and Marketing for I-play.

Maria joins other sports personalities who have computer games such as Colin McRae Rally 2005, Nate Adams Freestyle Motorcross, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater & Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005.

Sharapova makes Semi's

Maria Sharapova has cemented her place in the Semi Finals of the Indian Wells tournament held in California, USA after a two set victory over veteran player Mary Pierce 6-4 6-3.

The two hard hitters found it hard to break each other down early in the match with the number 3 seed Sharapova becoming frustrated. She did find more accuracy in her shots to finally defeat the Frenchwoman though and move on into the Semi's

"I'm really excited," Sharapova said. "It's definitely not going to be an easy match. But I feel I know what I need to do and hopefully I'll go out there and play as well as I did today."

Sharapova will now face Lindsey Davenport, the worlds number one, in the Semi Finals after she defeated Nathalie Dechy of France 7-6 6-0. The other semi final will see Elena Dementieva play Kim Clijsters

Sharapova dominates

Maria Sharapova made it into the last 8 of the Indian Wells after a impressive comeback against Fabiola Zuluaga. Maria was a set down early in the match to the Colombian 6-4 and was showing signs of impatience like she did in the Australian Open that proved costly.

The Russian though soon fought back and showed she was not going to fall for the same mistakes twice.

"It was a big battle out there," Sharapova said. "I basically committed suicide when I had those four match points, especially when I came into the net and stayed in the middle — like in the no zone."

Maria had a match point in the third set at 5-2 after taking the second 6-2 and she was beaten down her rigth hand side by a energetic Zuluaga and Maria had three more match points later in the game and losr them all including a 40-0 lead which Zuluaga cam back from.

The Colombian, seeded at number 19 before the tournament began came into the match with vicotories over Maria Sanchez Lorenzo
and Number 13 seed and Slovakian number 1 Daniela Hantuchova.

This match was not going to be easy for Sharapova, and despite a Zuluaga victory not being written in the script she could not be written off right until the end, and she proved that with her immense "bouncebackability" which frustrated Maria until she finally wrapped the last set up 7-5.

"When you're not playing your best tennis, those are the matches where you finish, win or lose.

"But it's good to get through them, because I feel whenever I don't play that well, then the next day I come out and I do better and better." said the Russian

Now Sharapova will face Mary Pierce of France after she defeated Number 6 seed Nadia Petrova

Kirilenko and Golovin Out

Maria Kirilenko and Tatiana Golovin's run in the Indian Wells Open has come to an end.

Kirilenko, who had knocked out seeded players Elena Bovina and Anabel Medina Garrigues failed to proceed past veteran Spanish star Conchita Martinez.

The Spaniard took the match in two sets having to play at her best to take the first set 7-5. The second set was slightly easier with a 6-3 win over the Russian Teen.

Seeded Golovin saw her run ended by Russian Elena Dementieva. Both seeds went through 2 hours on the court with Golovin in command early on after taking the first set 6-2.

She was pegged back by the fiesty Russian Bombshell in the second 6-4 before Elena went on the win the last set 6-4 also.

Sharapova goes through

Maria Sharapova won her match against fellow compatriot Dinara Safina in a convincing display 6-2 6-3. This is what she had to say

MARIA SHARAPOVA

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Maria.

Q. How were the conditions?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Not too good for tennis today. You know, I guess it's Mother Nature. You can't really do too much about it. But it was very unexpected because in practice it wasn't that bad. But when you got on the court, on the stadium, it wasn't like it was it was one direction. It was moving around.

You know, I guess I just had to hold on. The first three games were pretty ugly. You know, it's just a matter of getting used to the conditions.

Q. What's the most difficult part of playing through wind like that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think when you're playing -- when you feel confident, when you're playing good tennis, all of a sudden you come out, and these conditions are there. You don't know what to expect because you know you're playing well, but these conditions don't make you play well. You start trying to do something different, you might start making errors.

Q. Could you feel how well you were playing? Do you like how you're hitting the ball?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah. I think I was consistent. The first three games are a big exception, because that was not very pretty. But after I thought that, you know, when the points went a little bit longer, when the wind died down, I thought it was more consistent. I was able to hit one more ball in.

Q. She's been playing pretty well the last month. That has to be somewhat satisfying. You might have expected a big challenge on court.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I was definitely expecting a challenging match. And I think it was because when you go out and you're in these conditions, even though you feel that you're playing good, you just never know what can happen because of the conditions and the wind and the swirling.

Q. Your on-court interview, they mentioned this was your breakthrough tournament. Can you relate to Kirilenko, Linetskaya, you've been in that spot?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I just remember it was my first sort of big tournament I played. I got a wildcard. I won in the first round. I played MonicaSeles, which at that time, I don't know, she was the top player. Just the memories. I lost 1-0 but I thought I played so good. "There's something wrong here."

You know, you look back and think, even though you lost so easy, you know, you improved the things that you needed to improve. You wanted to work harder in order to get better, even though you thought you played the best you could.

I think with each single tournament, Maria or anyone else that plays that are young, they might feel like they're playing their best tennis, but at the time they might not be physically ready or they might not have the experience behind their backs. I think it just takes time.

Q. What was the biggest thing you learned from that first experience?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think the level of the competition. Just the fact that, you know, I went on court, and I remember first two games were really, really difficult against Monica. Deuce, I had breakpoints. I think I might have even broken her. You just think you're playing so good. But the top people, they just know -- you know, they're not worried. "Oh, I lost a break." But they know what to do.

It's just -- I don't know. I've learned so much in the past from that match.

Q. Did it just seem like the biggest stadium ever?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure. It was one of the biggest, if not the biggest I've ever played on back then.

Golovin Progresses

Tatiana Golovin progressed with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Mariana Diaz-Oliva. Below is an intervew she held after the match

Q. That was a very long, hard match. Talk about the beginning of the third set. Seemed like to take a half hour alone.

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I know. You know, I think I started off pretty well. I think in the second I was playing the same, but I was just making those mistakes that I wasn't making in the first set. You know, just seems likes all the girls really want to win and really want to beat me, so they're all hanging on every point and really are playing well. I think in the third set really I fought. I'm like, you got two hours to spend on the court and you just got to really focus, just try to do your best, keep on hitting the ball.

Obviously, I didn't play as well as I wanted to. But I think as long as I'm playing better with every match, I think that's the most important thing.

Q. Are those kind of matches sometimes more satisfying when you fight hard to win, even if you're not playing your best?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Definitely, definitely. I mean, we hit a lot of balls. That can only build up your confidence, even if you're not playing great, if you're not putting the balls away. I hit a lot of balls. I think mentally and physically I'm feeling well. Obviously going into my next match, I'll be ready. I want to play. I think that's really important.

Q. It wasn't that long ago you were one of those players who tried to knock off the bigger players. Reversing roles.

TATIANA GOLOVIN: It's so weird because it happened so fast. I just can't believe last year I was really happy going through the first round, beating a player. Now it just kind of seems like I have to win, and that's normal, and all the other players really want to play well against me. That's just really weird because it just happened so fast.

But I'm getting used to it. If I want to be Top 10, that's the way it's always going to be.

Q. So your next match against Dementieva, a Top 10. Are those the types of wins you need more of?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah, I think it's going to be a good match. I mean, I know how she plays. She knows how I play. I played her a few years ago in Paris. Obviously, I think we've both improved. It's going to be a totally different match. You know, I'm just really looking forward to it. Now I'm the one that's got nothing to lose. I'm just going to go out, really play well, try to play well, and we'll see how it goes.

Q. You're young. How much does experience matter now for you in winning matches versus when you first came on the tour, maybe didn't quite know as much?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah. Well, I think now the experience just comes. I mean, I'm not trying to get matches, not necessarily trying to get matches, because I played all last year pretty much a full schedule. I've played a lot of tournaments. I've had a lot of matches in. I don't think experience counts that match. I think "dealing" is the word, dealing with situations, dealing with them right, you know. You don't want to lose a match because you made some stupid mistakes at the wrong time. I think that's maybe what you mean by "experience".

Q. You feel like you're a smarter player now?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: I think you have to be. I think you have to be smarter with everything, off the court and on the court. Obviously, you know, last year I was really excited going to every tournament. For me everything was really new and exciting. Now it's more like this is kind of my job, this is kind of where I have to play well.

Q. What do you do tournament to tournament? Do you organize your own hitting partners?

TATIANA GOLOVIN: Yeah, I'm going to need to start having a sparring partner, so I can get my practices in, if I need to work on something. Like I said, I have Loic here. If anything really goes wrong, I feel like I need to work on something, it will always help. I don't feel pressure that I need a coach, that I'm lost when I'm on the court.

Kirilenko fires past Garrigues

Maria Kirilenko has kept her good form going with a win over the highly fancied Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The Russian, who has just defeated Elena Bovina the number 8 seed, proved it was not a fluke with another convincing 6-4 6-4 win.

Maria again dominated with her second serve to see her through the match winning 8 points more than Garrigues in a close encounter.

Sharapova's Burning Desire

Maria Sharapova brushed aside her opponent Angela Haynes in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to progress into the next round and set herself up with the number 25 seeded Russian Dinara Safina who defeated Lindsay Lee-Waters 6-2, 6-4.

The World number 3 further reiterated her desire to take the number one spot from Lindsey Davenport.

"Why would you want to be number 20 and then when you get to number 20, you don't want to be number one?," said Sharapova. "It's like 'shoot for the moon'. If you miss, you'll still be among the stars."

Kirilenko Interview

Maria Kirilenko defeated Elena Bovina, the number eight seed, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to make it into the 3rd round of the Pacific Life Open.

This is not the first time the Russian Qualifier  has dumped out a top seed and had an interview, found on the offical website

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Maria .

Q. Can there be some advantage to being a qualifier? You had been on these courts quite a bit before you had to play this match today.

MARIA KIRILENKO: Sorry. Can you repeat?

Q. Can there be an advantage to having to qualify in that you learn how the courts are playing and so forth before you have to play your first match?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Actually, first match in the qualifying was so hard for me. It was actually three sets. But I didn't like finish, she retired. But anyway, it was so difficult.

So I pass the quallies good, yeah. Day before yesterday I play pretty good. So today I fight like every point. So it was unbelievable.

Q. On the point that when you have matches, coming into a big match, you're not as rusty maybe?

MARIA KIRILENKO: I have a good confidence now. I played in Doha , I pass the qually there, and I beat in second round Patty Schnyder . It was, you know, going on. Now I feel pretty, yeah, confidence.

Q. Is beating Bovina a bigger victory for you than beating Patty Schnyder ? Is this win today, you beat Bovina , is that more important than beating Patty Schnyder ?

MARIA KIRILENKO: So I think they play both very good. But Bovina , they play like different hit. Patty Schnyder play like slice, like top, different. But Bovina , she play just hard. I think with her play like easier than with Patty Schnyder , for me. I don't know maybe for...

Q. Is that the best win of your career so far, do you think?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Best win?

Q. Today.

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yeah, I think so.

Q. Was it easier than you thought it would be?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No. It wasn't easy.

Q. The score looked like it.

MARIA KIRILENKO: The score is like easy, but for me it wasn't easy. It was hard.

Q. You know Maria Sharapova the best because you are close in edge.

MARIA KIRILENKO: I'm really good friends with her, so...

Q. Do you think that she considers her, with Serena , do you think she considers that a rivalry?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No, no, we didn't talk about it with her. I don't know.

Q. You never talk about that with her?

MARIA KIRILENKO: About matches, no. It's enough, you know. When we speak with her, no tennis.

Q. No tennis?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yeah.

Q. What do you talk about?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Just life. It's too much tennis, you know, if you talk.

Q. The past two tournaments, are you playing the best tennis of your life?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Today?

Q. This week and the couple weeks before.

MARIA KIRILENKO: Last few matches I play pretty good. So last few matches.

Q. What do you consider the best parts of your game, the strengths of your game?

MARIA KIRILENKO: So, you know, I start to push the player and sometimes go to the net. When the score like even, you know, make a pressure on player.

I think my serve, it's like much better than it was last year. It's play easy when you have a good serve, I think.

Q. Your strokes seem very similar to Sharapova's .

MARIA KIRILENKO: I don't think so that we play the same, no.

Q. You don't think so?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No, we have different shots.

Q. How do they differ, in your thinking?

MARIA KIRILENKO: I don't know. I don't know how, but we play different. I don't know how to explain.

Q. Will you play doubles this year a lot with Sharapova ?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No. In this year we didn't play. Not yet. Maybe we play in Bitterman (phonetic) game on the grass court.

Q. But you want to focus mostly on singles?

MARIA KIRILENKO: No, actually I play doubles with another player. I think doubles, it's good like for the practice. So I will play doubles like on each tournament.

Q. As a young Russian , can you describe what your reaction was when Myskina won the French Open . Do you remember where you were when the first Russian woman won a Grand Slam tournament?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yes, of course it's very good that it's like Russian going on. I think it's very good. I watched this match.

If I watch this match or what?

Q. What was your feeling when you saw that she won?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Nowhere. So like but why I have to be somewhere when she won?

Q. Were you happy? Were you proud? Does it give you a certain inspiration to see a country-woman win?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yes, it's okay. It's very good for country, of course.

Q. But for you, does it give you confidence?

MARIA KIRILENKO: For me, no more.

Q. Have you been here before to this area? How do you like it?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yeah, it's like --

THE INTERPRETER: She likes this tournament.

MARIA KIRILENKO: I like this tournament very much.

Q. Why?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Here it's very good. I don't know why, but it's good.

Q. Dementieva , Bovina , Sharapova , a lot of young Russian players have kind of had their first real success here. They all say the same thing, they like coming here. Why exactly?

MARIA KIRILENKO: Yeah, no, last year I lost the first round, I got a wildcard. But anyway, I love this tournament. I thought that the next year I will play better, you know, than last year. It's true.
