Awards: Oscar for Best Animated Feature, 35 wins and another 18 nominations.

Author's Comments: I first read of this animated movie from a local anime magazine after it won critical acclaim for its brilliance. It was only recently when I decided to actually watch it. I can only say this after watching it again and again: Magnificent. I don't think I've ever seen anything as creative. The environment and characters in this animation are so original and full of surprises. I find that it was easy for me to connect with the main character, Chihiro. When she was sad, I cried for her. When she was scared, I became terrified. Whatever the case, the audience feels the need to support her and cheer her on, as if they were the ones to be put in her predicament. Another very special trait of this movie is that each and every character has their own good and bad side. Unlike other animations, where characters are specifically categorized as "Good" and "Bad" or "Hero" and "Villain", the characters here have their own reasons and justification for their behavior, so much so that it is impossible to totally hate or love them. But that doesn't make it impossible to totally love this movie. ^^

Manga

Story and Art: Yoshiki Nakamura

Genres: Comedy, Romance, Shoujo

Age rating: Teenagers (May contain bloody violence, bad language, nudity)

Summary: Kyoko has devoted her life to Shotaro. When Shotaro came to Tokyo to debut as a singer, she followed him and worked to provide for him. But one day, Kyoko overhears Shota telling his manager that Kyoko means nothing to him. She's just convenient, a housekeeper. This makes Kyoko furious, and she vows revenge on Shotaro. But Shotaro just laughs at her, saying she won't be able to touch him because he's now a popular singer and she's a nobody. So Kyoko decides to get into showbiz and become even more popular than Shotaro to humiliate him. Unfortunately, Shotaro has destroyed Kyoko's ability to love, and she discovers that it is a prerequisite for her to debut from her chosen company, LME. The president of LME puts her into a new section made for those who caught his eye but have something missing. It's name... Section Love Me.

Author's Comments: I first read this manga because of a friend's recommendation. I have to say that the first few chapters did not impress me at all. But as the storyline continues, I was able to see more of Kyoko's character and I find myself admiring her guts and strong will to win. Not only that, her obliviousness and crazy perception to her environment has me shaking with laughter. The plot gets more interesting with the appearance of Ren, a famous handsome actor who seems to be involved with Kyoko's past. This had me asking what kind of connection the two had from the beginning of the story. Anyhow, the upturn of events in this story has left me dying to know its outcome. Skip Beat! is definitely a manga to keep your eye on.
