WELCOME .
For centuries women assisted one another when they had their babies and those women included grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunt and women in their immediate area who had given birth numerous times andor assisted others. Also from this situation evolved the midwife who was a specially trained woman who assisted the women who were giving birth. However, in our modern times, several situations have developed that have affected the natural order of birth: One was the advent of medicalized birth in the 20th century with medical doctors supplanting the previously mentioned women and also the conflict that is occurring as to whether midwifery care can gain a foothold in the childbirth process. Second is the reality of modern times which is mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters are so mobile and overwhelmed by our modern happenings that they live far distances often from each other. This presents a need for another woman to fill the role that in past times were filled by those individuals.
As a Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, and Postpartum Doula, I am trained and qualified to support you through this life changing event. As a mother of four, I have first hand experience of what pregnancy, birth and postpartum brings. I am also the grandmother of one. Additionally I am a RN who had worked in various settings: med-surgical, rehab, corrections, psych, insurance, nursing homes, home health. I have worked with various populations of all ages. My interest in this particular endeavor was developed two-fold: One through my own birth experiences and what others told me of theirs. Second, with the advent of The Business of Being Born which I and group of women brought to Richmond, Virginia, I recognized that the natural birth process was being subverted to one which took away the control and choices from women and their partners. As a RN who believes in total education, patient choice and empowerment , and being an advocate, this did not set right with me.
I also believe that those who are thinking of getting pregnant should be educated. This is primarily because of the following reasons: In order to choose a course of action, one must be educated as to what it involves; those who want to get pregnant need to know what to do to prepare themselves in many realms; plus childbirth education should not just started in the latest stage of pregnancy. It is too important and what one does even in the earliest stages of pregnancy is too important. Also those involved need to have education on how to choose the birth place and provider who will support what they want their birth to be.
