Telemark Dance Troupe

of UC Davis

Who are we?

Telemark Dance Troupe has been an active group of performing dancers for 15 years. Telemark was originally formed from within the UC Davis Ballroom Dance Club and has since become its own group, changing its official name in 1999. Each year Telemark members work with student choreographers on over a dozen ballroom routines in anticipation of our annual spring showcase! As a nonprofit organization, Telemark members contribute quarterly dues to help offset the costume and theater rental costs, thus allowing this student run group to survive and thrive! Most Telemark members spend anywhere from five to fifteen hours a week practicing for this performance and are extremely dedicated and passionate about social dance. This year's showcase combines many forms of ballroom dance such as swing, salsa, tango, waltz, fox trot, and quick step, as well as lyrical and more modern dance pieces. With over fifty active members ranging from beginning dancers to those at a competitive level, Telemark Dance Troupe is an eclectic group of individuals who share a sincere love of dance. We encourage all UCD students and faculty, as well as Davis community members, to attend our showcase and help support our wonderful group of dancers!

What do we do?

Telemark is a performance group.  We perform various types of ballroom and social dancing, such as: waltz, east and west coast swing, hustle, tango, cha-cha, rumba, salsa, fox trot, and quick step.

In the spring, we hold an annual showcase that includes many of the dance styles mentioned above, as well as a couple of professionally choreographed pieces.  This years spring showcase will be held the third weekend of May at Main Stage Theater.

How do you get involved?

Come to our New Member Workshop October 19th from 6-8pm in the Pavilion.  We will have members on hand to give you any information you may need at both events.

You are free to dance as few or as many dances as you choose.  Of course, time committment is a huge factor, so take that into consideration.  Each dance usually requires about 2-5 hours per week of practice.  Don't forget to start looking early in the fall - sometimes spots fill up fast!  You can also choreograph your own piece if you want to.

Visit the contacts page and talk to one of us.  We are here to help!

How can you help?

As a nonprofit organization, Telemark Dance Troupe is always looking for ways to help raise money to off set our member fees. The cost of costumes, shoes, make-up, the theater rental, lighting, props, and everything that goes into planning your own performances can really add up. If you are a member of the Davis community and want to help Telemark please contact The administative directors (telemarkad@gmail.com). We are always looking for gift certificates and gift baskets to use in our annual showcase raffle that takes place during the intermission breaks each evening of our showcase and can use all the help we can get!  For donating to our raffle, your organization or business can be listed in our program under the "special thanks" section. Not only will you be helping out a group of hard working students and dancers, but you will be demonstrating your interest in giving back to the community in which you serve!

Telemark Dance Troupe-Frequently Asked Questions

What is Telemark?

We are a Performance Ballroom Dance Club run mostly by UCDavis students, and we are composed of students and non-students alike.

What do you do?

Each Year we choreograph 10-15 ballroom dance routines of varying styles; we rehearse pieces from November to April and then have a big Showcase Performance at Main Stage Theatre on campus in May.  We also get together for workshops and social events throughout the year.

Do I need Experience or a Partner?

No experience or partner necessary!  All our routines are choreographed so we teach you all the steps, moves and technique you need to know.  And if partners are necessary in the piece, we partner you up.  However previous experience in any dance background is useful and there are dance pieces of all difficulty levels.

What about Practices and Time Commitment?

Your rehearsal days and times are dependent on how many dance pieces you choose to participate in.  Anticipate 1-2 hours a week per dance piece depending on difficulty level.  The days and locations of practices will be determined by your director and your group.

Does it cost anything?

Yes, Troupe dues are $25 per quarter.  This money goes toward theater rental, hiring choreographers and some social events.

How do I get involved?

Come to Info Night or New Member Workshop.  The dates for these events are posted in the "Current News" section.  We can also answer any questions you may have through email.
