Growing Up

So, it's November. The leaves are changing colors and before we know it we'll be out of school for the holidays! Like the leaves we're also changing and growing up. For some people this is awesome to be "all grown up", some think it's terrifying, and if you're like me you feel a little of both. It seems like no one exactly understands what you're going through, hey! sometimes you don't even understand what you're going through. Growing can be tough and really confusing sometimes. But there's always one place you can go to find answers and that place is:

The Bible

What is the bible?

The inspired Word of God. (2 Peter1:20-21)

The Bible is perfect. (Proverbs 30:5)

The Bible is free from all errors (Psalm 12:6)

The Bible is our guide for life. (Psalm 119:105)

The Bible is light. (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Bible is true. (Hebrews 4:12)

2. Top 5 Reasons of why most people don’t read the Bible.

5. No time to read the bible.

(Okay, we have time for T.V. and other unimportant stuff.)

4. It’s too hard to understand.

(You can buy a commentary or talk to someone who can help you understand. There are also easier versions of the Bible that you can purchase.)

3. Doesn’t apply to me.

(The Bible applies to EVERYONE, if you just let it.)

2. The Bible is boring.

(Sometimes, devotions and other things can help you understand the Bible better, but the Bible is far from boring.)

1. People don’t understand that it’s actually GOD’S WORD!

3. Why you should read the Bible.

The Bible is God’s way of revealing Himself to us, so that we can come to learn and know more about who He is. So, we need to READ it!

Keep the Light On

Pete, time to come in, called Mom. "You have things to do before dinner." Soon Pete skidded to a halt in front of his mother. "What do I need to do, Mom?" he asked. "This." Mom held out Pete's Bible. "You said your Sunday school teacher gave you daily reading assignments this week." "Yeah," said Pete, "but I don't see why." He shrugged carelessly. "I know you and Dad always think I should read some verses every day, too, but we go to church on Sundays-twice-and I learn about God there." He took the Bible and sat down to read. Mom frowned, but she didn't say anything more about it until that night. When she walked past Pete's room, she reached in and shut the light off. "Mom!" exclaimed Pete. "I was working on my model ship. I need the light on to see what I'm doing." "But the light was on for a while," said Mom. "I'm sure you can remember where things are. Can't you just make do with the light you got while it was on?" "Of course not," grumbled Pete as he reached for the switch. Mom smiled. "Having light for a short time is helpful, but it's not enough, is it, Pete?" she asked. "After it's turned off, you remember where things are for a while, but to do your best work, you need the light on, right?" "Of course," agreed Pete. "God refers to His Word-the Bible-as 'light,'" said Mom. "It's good to get that light in church on Sundays, but that's not enough, either. To get the greatest benefit from the light of God's Word, you need to make constant use of it. 'Turn it on'-use it during the week as well as on Sunday."

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you think that because you go to church, daily devotions aren't important? To stay on the right path with God, you need His light regularly. "Turn on" the light of His Word for spiritual direction. Learn God's ways and gain His wisdom. Ask Him to help.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: (Psalm 119:130)

"The entrance of Thy words giveth light."

Some advice from Brio.

Dear Susie:
I try to read my Bible every day, but sometimes I find it boring, and then I feel guilty for saying God’s Word is boring. I know it’s important, so I still read it, but I want to have a more positive attitude. What should I do?

Trying

Dear Trying:
I’m smiling as I answer your letter, because I can identify with you! Let’s face it: There are parts of the Bible that really are boring . . . parts of Numbers for example. But as you say, it is God’s Word, and that makes ALL of it important. Try to vary your reading. After reading something you think is boring, purposely read something that you love . . . a Psalm, John 14, a Proverb, etc.

You may also want to get a student devotional book that you can read along with the Bible. I’m proud of you for taking God’s Word seriously and knowing the value it has in our lives!
