VARIOUS ARTISTS = TURN ON, TUNE IN, DROP OUT

a compilation of underground sounds from the sixties which includes captain beefheart's vocal on FRANK ZAPPA's 1969 song willie the pimp from the 'hot rats' album.

[may 1997]

FRANK ZAPPA = CHEAP THRILLS
1998 usa ceedee rykodisc rcd 10579
1998 australia ceedee [label and cat. no. unknown]

low-budget compilation of mainly live tracks, meant to promote albums that usually only are bought by his completists. the highlight is captain beefheart's guest appearance as singer and harmonica player on the original version of the torture never stops, an outtake from their spring 1975 'bongo fury' tour collaboration, and which previously had been released on volume 4 of zappa's 'you can't do that on stage anymore' series.

SPECIAL, for statistics only: FRANK PROMOTES DON

last year frank zappa's treasurers couldn't get enough of promoting him, instead of bringing out gems from his productional work like captain beefheart's aborted 1976 album 'bat chain puller' (with 'the lost beefheart episodes' as an astonishing exception). so the perfect collector should add - and we poor ones just have to write in - the following promo ceedee releases to CAPTAIN BEEFHEART'S CARGO:

FRANK ZAPPA = STRICTLY COMMERCIAL 1996 promo ceedees with CAPTAIN BEEFHEART as GUEST

CLEAN AMERICAN VERSION = san ber'dino * australia: rykodisc prd 95/56 * usa: rykodisc vrcd 0501
DITTIES AND BEER = sam with the showing scalp flat top [actually a don van vliet composition] = willie the pimp * uk: rykodisc zap 2
KILL UGLY RADIO = san ber'dino * usa: vrcd 0502 in full jewel case
NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL = debra kadabra * uk: rykodisc zap 1
RETURN OF THE SON OF KILL UGLY RADIO = alley cat [actually a van vliet / zappa composition] = poofter's froth wyoming plans ahead * usa: rykodisc vrcd 0503

this massive avalanche of promos in fact only was rolling along with the outburst of 'strictly commercial' ceedee samplers the zappa trust brought out to promote frank [as if that is needed]. though the track-lists of the following records vary, they all have the same guest appearances by don van vliet: = san ber'dino and = muffin man:

STRICTLY COMMERCIAL specially banded for radio * uk: rykodisc vrcd 10600 * usa & canada: rykodisc vrcd 10500 custom-made opaque red jewel case
STRICTLY COMMERCIAL * australia: rykodisc tvd 93446 with bonus cd ELVIS HAS JUST LEFT THE BUILDING * japan: rykodisc vack 2013
STRICTLY COMMERCIAL advance cd * usa: rykodisc rcd 40500 adv.

[by the way: because all this hokus-pokus was done to promote the public release of a first 'zappa-after-death-intro', both songs also are part of 1995's STRICTLY COMMERCIAL the best of frank zappa * usa: ceedee - rykodisc rcd 40500 * uk: ceedee - rykodisc rcd 40600 & double-elpee - rykodisc ralp 40500, limited and numbered release & cassette - rykodisc rac 40600]
