PENA

[conversation:]
don van vliet (captain beefheart): ah, ha, ha, ha...! fast and bulbous.
victor hayden (the mascara snake): fast and bulbous!
don van vliet: that's... (laughs)
frank zappa: hey, do it again.
don van vliet: i love that, i love all those words.
victor hayden: fast and bulbous!
don van vliet: that's right, the mascara snake, fast and bulbous.
victor hayden: bulbous also tapered.
don van vliet: yeah, but you got to wait till i say: 'also a tinned...: teardrop'.
victor hayden: (laughs) oh, christ!
frank zappa: alright, again. beginning...
victor hayden: fast and bulbous.
don van vliet: that's right, the mascara snake. fast and bulbous. also a tinned teardrop.
victor hayden: bulbous also tapered.
don van vliet: that's right.

pena
her little head clinking
like a barrel of red velvet balls
full past noise
treats filled her eyes
turning them yellow like enamel coated tacks
soft like butter hard not to pour
out enjoying the sun while sitting on
a turned on waffle iron
smoke billowing up from between her legs
made me vomit beautifully
and crush a chandelier
fall on my stomach and view her
from a thousand happened facets
liquid red salt ran over crystals
i later band-aided the area
sighed
o well it was worth it
pena pleased but sore from sitting
chose to stub her toe
and view the white pulps horribly large
in their red pockets
'i'm tired of playing baby,' she explained
and out of a blue felt box let escape
one yellow butterfly the same size
its droppings were tiny green phosphorus worms
that moved in tuck and rolls that clacked
and whispered in their confinement
three little burnt scotch taped windows
several yards away
mouths open to tongues that vibrated
and lost saliva
pena exclaimed: 'that's the raspberries'

WELL

light floats down day river on a red raft of blood
night blocks out the heavens like a big black shiny bug
its hard soft shell shining white in one spot well
it's a hard place that i'm living but i'm doing well well
the white ice horse melted like a spot of silver well
its mane went last then disappeared the tail
my life ran through my veins
whistling hollow well
i froze in solid motion well well
i heard the ocean swarming body well well
i heard the beetle clicking well
i sensed the thickest silence scream
then i begin to dream
my mind cracked like custard
ran red until it sealed
turn to wooden and rolled like a wheel well well
thick black felt birds a-flying
with capes of solid chrome
with feathers of solid chrome
and beaks of solid bone
and bleach the air around them
white and cold well well
till it's shown in pain
the hollow cane clicked like ever after
its shadow vanished shining silence
well well

WHEN BIG JOAN SETS UP

hoy hoy
when big joan comes out
her arms are too small
her head like a ball
she tied off her horse
and galloped off into the moonbeams
she pulled up her blouse
and compared her navel to the moon
i dig my life for a while
when big joan sets up
her hands are too small
she's too fat to go out in the daylight
so she rolls around allnight
i'm just sort of a thread
with a drooped body
i'll set up with you, big joan
i'm too fat to go out in the daylight
i'll stay up all night
i won't droop if you won't talk
about your hands being too small
you know something is happening
or you wouldn't have come out like you did
she ain't built for going naked
so she can't wear any new clothes
or go to the beach
they laugh at her body
because her hands are too small
when big joan sits up her hands are too small
she's out of reach
a turquoise scarf and a sleeve
rolled up over a merc montclair
i'll sit up with you, big joan
i'm too fat to go out in the daytime
i'll stay up all night
if you promise not to talk
about your hands being too small
hoy hoy
is she a boy?

FALLIN' DITCH

[conversation:]
don van vliet (captain beefheart): now we won't have to worry about rockette morton - what's the name of that girls?
mark boston (rockette morton): (makes acceleration noises) rockette morton takes off again into the wind.
don van vliet: what do you run on, rockette morton?
john french (drumbo): say...: beans.
don van vliet: (laughs)
rockette morton: i run on beans..., i run on lazier beans. [mind: nót laser beans - teejo]

when i get lonesome the wind begins to moan
when i trip falling ditch
somebody wants to throw the dirt right down
when i feel like dying the sun comes out
stole my fear and gone
who's afraid of the spirit with the bluesferbones?
who's afraid of the falling ditch?
falling ditch ain't gonna get my bones
how's that for the spirit?
how's that for the things?
ain't my fault the thing has gone wrong
when i'm smiling my face wrinkles up real warm
when i'm frowning things just turn to stone
falling ditch ain't gonna get my bones
when i get lonesome the wind begins to moan
falling ditch ain't gonna get my bones

SUGAR 'N' SPIKES

and sugar and spikes and neon nights
walk in lights in chains coughing smoke whooping hope
cardinal sky rush by falls bark in dark
fall back in dark
pies steam stale shoes move broom and pale
moon in a dime store sale
sugar and spikes and everything nice and everything nice and crazy
that's what little worlds are made of lady
i'm paid up in home in my new friday's house
there's no h on my faucet
there's no bed for my mouse
my punch and grow mind in diamond back time
now it's king for a day with my lady looking fine
got my peak up hat and my caramel mask
tremelo car speidel wrist round my honey
going to see the navy blue vicar
paul peter and misses wray flicker

ANT MAN BEE

white ants running
black ants crawling
yellow ants dreaming
brown ants longing
all those people longing to be free
uhuru ant man bee uhuru ant man bee
all the ants in god's garden they can't get along
war still running on
it's that one lump of sugar
that they won't leave each other alone
why do you have to do this? you've got to let us free
why do you have to do this? you've got to set us free [3x]
uhuru ant man bee uhuru ant man bee
now the bee takes his honey
then he sets the flower free
but in god's garden
only man and the ants
they won't let each other be
