How do I get a contract?

That's where we come in. Once we have located a school that wants to hire you, we will ask them for a copy of their contract. Before passing it onto you, we will ensure that the contract is standard and that there are no confusing or ambiguous issues which could confuse prospective teachers. We will also ensure that it is fair in terms of all requirements asked of teachers. If the contract meets our approval, we will pass it on to you. Once you have signed it, we will return it to your employer.

This lets the employer know that you are serious about working in Taiwan and have agreed to the working conditions stated in the contract. It is however not legally binding.

Upon arrival in Taiwan, you and your employer will both sign a copy of the contract again to make it legal. You need a contract before the government will issue the necessary work permits.

Most contracts are for a year. If you want to extend your contract, you can arrange it easily with your boss after you have been in Taiwan for a few months. In order to ensure that teachers remain for the full duration of their contract, almost all employers take what they call a 'security deposit' of NT$ 10 - 15 000 per month from each teacher, for the first six months. They keep this money and return it to you at the end of your year's teaching. Although this is not strictly legal, it is very common practice, and there are very few instances of employers dishonouring their obligations.
