RETHINKING NATIONAL SECURITY - THE ROLE of CIVIC SOCIETY
Though  change in politics may seem important, it is even more important with direct involvement in civic society, especially expanding from local activities to global solidarity.

For the peace and justice movement it is essential, not just to have policies opposing the military response to conflicts, but also actions that reach out and create vibrant alternatives to national security. The disposed regimes of Afghanistan and Iraq together with the logic of different fundamentalist groups using terrorism to advance their aims, can't be ignored as opponents to peace and justice.

The way to transcend the cycle of violence, the "tooth for tooth" logic of old times, is not just to declare "not in my name" on one side of the equation, but also to expand to people on the other side declaring "not in my name", by establishing direct solidarity between people around the world, who in civic society express another logic, in forming another culture for coexistence in an increasingly interdependent world.
In the formation of such a culture it is also essential to be aware of the underlying conflicts, and to find a creative rather than destructive dynamic between traditionalism and modernism.

Let us work for a non-violent people to people solidarity fighting ALL political, military and financial power elites that try to involve us in their conflicts of interest, quests for honor and glory, dominance and control.

I urge for support to movements that neither want to reestablish totalitarian regimes, nor be lackey pseudo-democratic puppets for European/North American economic domination.
