RAMIREZ RACING STABLES

Thoroughbred Racehorse Trainer

Thomas Ramirez Racing Stables

Thomas Ramirez isnt one of the better known trainers in the sport of thoroughbred racing, but nonetheless, he still knows how to win. Tommy(as known to most), is a third generation horseman with over 30 years of experience in the racing industry.

Tommy first took out his trainers license in 1992 and with a small group of ragtag throwaway claimers, preceded to win over twenty percent of his races. "I started off with five horses which all had leg or mental problems. I was alone, on my own and didnt have very much to work with. But I let them know I was there." His star pupils at the time was the versatile Jacklyn Slade, a winner of fifteen career races, and Gate Blazer, a fast closing daughter of Gate Dancer.

As a youngster, Tommy was very active in sports, especially baseball, basketball and bowling. "I loved competing and I always gave my best"

His passion for racing and competitive spirit would end up leading him to a career in training horses.

"I've had a few decent horses, but i've also had cheaper horses to work with as well. Regardless of their talent level, I treated them all the same....special. In doing so, I feel I managed to bring out the best in each and every one of them"

Tommy has won with every horse that he has trained except one, and that horse finished a fast closing second in her only start under the Ramirez shed. This was a very stubborn filly whose former conditioner had lost interest in her and approached Tommy one afternoon asking if he would consider taking her over. This particular filly was refusing to participate in her morning exercises, freezing up out on the track, and causing herself to get very little out of her training. She had no interest in what she was being asked to do, which led to her finishing well back in each of her races. Tommy decided to work with her and it wasnt very long before he had her not only getting involved, but enjoying it.

"A lot of it is mental. You have to work on problem horses a bit differently. Spending more quality time with them. Assuring them that everything is gonna be okay. Gaining their trust. Having them to the point of wanting to train, instead of forcing them too. I am a believer in shaping a horses character to be that of an intelligent, happy and mentally tough individual. To me, this is an important part of managing a successful stable and getting the most out of each animal. Cheat them and you cheat yourself.

Horses that hate or resent what they are asked to do everyday will not be a willing participate and they will fight you. These animals should be eager and looking forward to their daily activities of training. Properly managed individuals will be far more inclined to listen and learn when they are enjoying life."
