Liberty's Kids (May 28, 2007)

This is a good show, especially if you’re a little kid.  But little kid or not, this show is extremely inaccurate and at times annoying.  Allow me to give examples why I find it annoying:

1)      George Washington:  Well, he seems too…ah, how do I say this?  Um, he has no emotions?  Seriously, he’s all war.  I’m sure he had his hands full, but to show him worried only about the war seems unrealistic.  Doses he ever laugh, I mean really laugh at something he finds amusing?  What about his wife and children?  Does he ever wonder about them?  At night does he cry himself to sleep because he misses his family?  And what if America loses the war?  What if he is hanged for treason?  I know this is for kids, but still, he should show a bit more emotion.

2)      Benjamin Franklin:  He just does not act the way I imagined him to act.  I like Walter Cronkite, the guy who does his voice, but he just seems not to fit the character.  And what about his son, he was loyal to England; did that ever make Franklin mad?  And it shows little about his time in France.  I’d like it to have shown more.

3)      Founding Fathers in General:  Also, they did not seem very worried about losing the war.  It’s almost like there saying “Hey, we don’t care about losing the war because we know that we are an animated series made over 200 years from now!  We already know what happens!” They are also portrayed as saints, as though they have no flaws.  We know that is not true, yet, it is a kid’s show…

4)      King George III*:  Does he even say anything?  I can’t remember.  Well, if he did, it clearly wasn’t enough to show why he did what he did.  He was a complex man, a REAL man, a man with real emotions and problems.  He had an unhappy marriage, his children were scandalous, and he found comfort in Handel’s music as well as the gardens.  Because of his love of Agriculture, he was known as “Farmer George.” He did what any leader in his position would do.  Would not our government do similar things if there were rebels in our country?

5)      Africans:  They were NEVER treated this well in real life, not matter what anyone thought of them.  Moses had an awfully modern way of behaving.  If, for some miraculous reason an African was free and, say, made a fortune and was apart of society, they still would never be treated as well.  Sure, they TALKED about slavery, but they way they were going on, you would think it was the Civil War.

6)      Native Americans:  Same as Africans, never treated as well as on the show.  Not nearly as nice either.  Some, anyway.

7)      Notice when it ran: 2002-2004.  Hmm… same time as the Iraq war began.  What a coincidence.  I’ll leave it at that.

8)       Sarah:  The most annoying person in the entire show!  When I first saw her, I thought: ‘Wow!  Someone from England who can show the British side!  How cool!’  But then came the episode where she became loyal to America, which is okay, but her personality drastically changed in ONE EPISODE!!! WTF IS THAT ABOUT????  Come on!  Lets be realistic hear!  Its one thing if she has a different opinion, but in ONE EPISODE!  Now that’s just stupid!  I thought it was so cool that they had a British perspective, but they sooo ruined it.  She turned her back on her family, friends, and country.  No wonder we won the war, no one knew what side they wanted to be on!  I could go on and on, but I would be rambling.

Well, that’s my rant.  There are a few other things, but there not as annoying.  Agree or disagree, I just had to get that off my chest.

*There is a great biography about King George III by Christopher Hibbert called George III: A Personal History.  It’s very enlightening.
