A complimentary consultation
To get to know each other, and see if my services are what you're looking for, I like to meet with you in a neutral location and go over what I can do for you.
At least 2 prenatal visits
If you hire me, I will come to your house for at least two prenatal visits. During these visits I will give you more information about myself and listen to what your ideal labour and delivery look like. I will also help you to make an extensive birth plan. A birth plan should include your personal wishes about what should or should not happen during labour and delivery, including labour positions, the use of pain medication, and medical interventions. I will also provide unlimited support by phone or e-mail from the time you hire me.
Continuous support during your labour and delivery
I would prefer that you call me as soon as you think labour has begun, even if you're not 100% sure. In early labour I will come to your house to provide support there if that is your wish. During your labour I know when to be by your side, but I also know to step back when you are doing well. My goal is to empower you in thinking and knowing that you are able to trust your body and know its capabilities, not to be somebody that you can't be without. Comfort measures include, but are not limited to, varying labour positions, relaxation techniques, and researched information.
Postpartum support
I will stay for up to two hours after delivery if needed. You can use this time to rest with your baby, get cleaned up, and/or start breastfeeding. I have breastfed 3 children and can offer tips and pointers if nurses are busy. I will come to the hospital or your house one day after delivery to help you and answer questions and will also come 2 weeks postpartum to do a follow up appointment. I will also provide unlimited support by phone or e-mail for 2 weeks postpartum to answer any questions you may have.
What does a doula cost?
Across Canada, doula costs vary considerably from $200 to over $1500. I charge a flat rate of $300 in most cases* (rates in the Okanagan are slightly higher.) A $50 deposit is required to save your place on my calendar. Half of the remainder should be paid at our birth plan meeting, and the rest by 1 week postpartum.
*For low income families I will work on a sliding scale to make sure that everybody that wants a doula can have one. Please contact me for futher info.
