Mother's Instinct Doula Services

Personalized support through labour, delivery, and postpartum

What is a doula?

A doula can be described in many ways. What it means to me is somebody who is aiding and supporting you in order to achieve a positive birth experience.

What a doula can do for you

What type of birth are you looking for? What do you want to happen during your labour? Are you going to try a medication free labour/birth or are you looking to have pain medication as soon as possible? A trained doula will ask you all of these questions and help you find the answers. When you have a doula you also lower the chances of having medical interventions:

  • 25% shorter labour
  • 30% reduction in analgesia use
  • 40% reduction in oxytocin use
  • 40% reduction in forceps use
  • 50% reduction in cesarean rates
  • 60% reduction in epidural requests

A doula can also help with a partner. If your husband/partner is interested in being very involved, we can get him/her helping you with labour positions and comforting you in other ways. A doula can let your partner rest, get you both something to eat, and show him/her how to be of more assistance. If your partner is squeamish, or just wants to be there for moral support, that's where your doula comes in with her comfort, knowledge, and support.

What doulas do not do

As a doula, I can not take blood pressure, asses fetal heart tones, or give vaginal exams. One service I do not provide is speaking for you. Instead, I will help you find your voice and make sure you understand what is happening during your labour and birth. I will do this by answering questions, providing feedback, and reviewing your birth plan with you.
