Tambuku Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Ridgebacks of Africa

Sabrina (Tribal Fire)

Sabrina is to be bred in the first week of September 2009. This means that her puppies would be ready to go sometime in January 2010. For anyone interested in a puppy from this lovely bitch, please contact Sian Hall at the contact details given on this site.

This girl has a very sweet temperament and tremendous personality. She is highly biddable and obedient. She is also very intelligent.

She also has elegance, bone, substance, an excess of energy, endurance and speed. She is athletic and her structure ensures that she has abundant heart and lung room.

Please read more about Sabrina in Tambuku's Debutants.

Father of Sabrina's Litter: Bundi

Bundi is an exceptionally athletic little dog hailing from International and Old South African and Rhodesian Lines.

Bundi lives in the Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu Natal. Being on the smaller side of the scale he is lean and athletic, with good bone and a lovely head. He is a graceful male with a pretty movement. Posessing great endurance Bundu can run at high speed for a good number of kilometres in the mountains which is not bad for a dog of 8 years. Bundi also has very good feet which is absolutely essential in a working hound.

An older boy now, Bundi was selected to breed to Sabrina for his lighter and smaller size to contribute grace and elegance to a litter of which a number will find their way to the show ring. He also complements Sabrina's breeding in that he too breeds back to old lines, dogs that I am very familiar with and who have held a place in my heart all these years. Just to mention some of these dogs: Globe's Roving Red Regent features twice in Bundi's breeding, Pronkberg Matange twice, and Roodedraai Pampata, a Best in Show winning bitch, and litter sister my my Vumba.

Bundi is a good, old-fashioned type of Ridgeback, and he has proven himself in the African veld, in the mountains where conditions are quite hard. He adapts beautifully to the rigours of his mountain home. But perhaps Bundi's most outstanding quality is his unassuming, self-confident, extremely gentle temperament. He is calm, collected, sensible and interactive. More than this, he is a gentleman.

The photo above was taken in a cave once inhabited by Stone Age Bushmen. A popular hang-out spot for Bundi in the veld. The photo to the belowt was taken recently in the veld on one of Bundi's daily walks. In this photo you can see how Bundi has grace and elegance for a male dog, but still has good bone and a very typical head.

Although an older dog now, and although this photo has been taken as a snap shot in the African veld, Bundi's quality still shines through. He is a dog that encapsulates, grace, elegance, speed, endurance, health and vigour, and retains good bone and very good feet, so important in a working hound.

This dog is also very dry in skin, and with a classic old type of Ridgeback head with good depth of muzzle but still good length to the muzzle. He has a long graceful neck, and a lovely expression. He also is quite compact is body length. Many Ridgebacks are becoming too long in body, and too long in loin, most especially show dogs. Bundi has an excellent top line.

Unfortunately the angle of the photograph does not do justice to his shoulder and upper arm which is shortened according to camera perspective, but the cave  photograph taken side on shows adequate length of upper arm and a well-placed shoulder.

These qualities of a Classic Old Type dog living and working in the African veld, derived from Old South African and Rhodesian lines, decided me to select this dog as a first mate for Sabrina.

Bonnie (Boniwe)

Tambuku's little ijakalasi will also be bred for her first litter in 2009.

This litter is likely to be of immense interest to canid researchers and fanciers of original dog and land races. Remember, she is only likely to a few puppies so bookings to homes who can partake in our project should be made early.

Homes to these puppies will be regarded as having taken place in a research project.
