The original Tall Timber Railroad started out as a 4x6 module section, which was a part of three other On30 modelers. As time progressed, it was dismantled, but most of the structures have been incorporated into the present 9 x 12 layout. The module section was featured in the Finescale Railroader 2002 Logging Annual, and the Shay was featured in the 2001 Finescale Railroader Annual. Here is one of the pictures of the original layout.
The module was built on foam board. Most of the structures are scratch built with board by board construction. The entire module was built on foam board and was completed in 59 days. The module was placed outside for these photographic purposes only. The construction pictures and additional photos of the original module appear in our new CD EBook.
The "Official" History Of the Tall Timber Railroad
The Tall Timber Railroad is a short line railroad that operates in the coastal ranges of the Pacific Northwest. The railroad services the small town of Beaver Creek and the Tall Timber Lumber Company. The railroad is managed by the Stoddard family, descendents of the covered wagon pioneers into the region, and are the present owners of the mill. Future plans are to continue to the small town of Port, which will provide a harbor connection to further market their wood products to vendors all over the world. Currently, the depression has begun to hit the area full swing, and the mills' equipment is in hard times. Still, everyone plays their key roll in getting the daily task at hand done, as the sawmill and railroad survive the Great Depression.
The Current Tall Timber Railroad
Today, the Tall Timber is a 9X12 layout. The layout was built in just over 1 year’s time. It had been featured in a monthly article series in Model Railroading beginning in May of 2005. Titled "The Tall Timber Railroad: An On30 Layout You Can Build"each month covered a topic or "how to" for constructing a layout. The series never finished before Model Railroading closed shop. Our CD EBook has all the chapters plus additional updates!
