BRIEF HISTORY OF TALISAY
(Brief history taken from CANORAS Inauguration brochure dated 1996)
Talisay was named after the Talisay trees that grew abundantly in the place during those days. when the Spaniards came, some people were cutting trees. The Spaniards asked what was the name of the place in Spanish language. These people, not knowing the Spanish language thought they were asked about the name of the trees they were cutting. So they answered "Talisay". The Spaniards then called the place Talisay.
Talisay became a town in 1634, but it was only since 1733 when records of the municipal officials or captain municipal or presidents (now mayors) were known. ANTONIO ESTANISLAO became the first capitan municipal followed by 83 capitanes, the last one was BLAS CUANO (1899-1900).
During the American rule, in 1901, the town of Talisay became a part of Indan (now Vinzons) with BRAULIO CHAVEZ as president and LEON IBIS as Vice. Then following them were 15 mayors, the last being TOMAS MANCENIDO (1980-1998).
Very few know that one of the towns like Talisay was one of those which were subjected to the Moro raids. On November 3, 1818, this town and Daet were among those mentioned on the circular of Alcalde Mayor INIGO GONZALES AZAOLA requiring the towns to prepare adequate defenses like castillos and baluartes. Talisay which had never received any armaments before sought ammunitions and guns of various calibers and 24 auxiliary muskets, all of which would be in the care of 100 militiamen well instructed in handling them and always combat ready. This only shows people of this town were very courageous and ever ready to defend themselves.
Some Facts About Talisay:
1. The tribunal was the municipal building in the Spanish days. It is the same spot where the present municipal building is located.
2. The school for boys was located in the spot where the present industrial arts building is located.
3. The school for girls was located in the corner of Rizal Street and Vinzons Avenue.
4. The Talisay bridge was first constructed in 1828 in the days of Gov. Estrada. It is known as Puente Isabel Segovia, built under the management of Garcia and Cayno. This bridge was destroyed by the big flood in 1908. It was rebuilt but again destroyed during the Japanese occupation. It was rebuilt after the war.
5. The first Talisay church was big, beautiful and spacious. It was burned but it was reconstructed into a smaller one.
Talisay with a population of 16,896 (1990 census) is classified as 6th class municipality. It is composed of 14 barrios. The ladn feature of the place is generally for farming specially rice, corn and other plants like coconuts, beans and other vegetables.
During the past years, rice production was lost in this town. But because of the irrigation system during the Magsaysay administration plus the cientific methods of farming aided by the different agencies like the BAEX, the BPI, etc, the town is now producing a little bit better.
Industries like fishing, nipa makaing, weaving, crochetting, and other cottage industries help the people improve their standard of living.
