Who I Am...

Talismin's Heart

Since I was writing this anyway for a class...FYI

My self-summary

I am a complex person. I am hard to get to know, but I am willing to be a friend. I enjoy movies, music, books, the outdoors, cooking, animals, computers, art, and living life to the fullest.

In the past I have managed a restaurant, been a rock radio disc jockey, made computer chips for Intel, worked in various industrial settings making everything from big paper sheets and foam sheets to seatbelt buckles, and answered the phone for a technical help desk for a DSL provider. Just to name a few.

I suffered a fairly catastrophic illness and became disabled a while ago, but I have had a surgery that should allow me to get better and go back to work, or school, since I am several years out of date for the technical fields that I love.

I love being creative, and would like to learn to make pottery.

I also would like to learn a new language...Spanish, Italian, Gaelic...those appeal to me. Russian might be fun, Chinese would be a great challenge.

What I'm doing with my life

Getting back on my feet. Trying to become a better person. I am going back to school to study video production with an eye towards going into film studies and working in the television and movie industry. I really enjoy working with computers to create art.

Edit:
Well once I actually got into school, I went a different direction. I now am leaning more towards a career in film and television. I am studying video production right now and hoping to transfer my credits after I graduate to a four-year school that has a film studies major. I would like to write or edit films... or both...LOL. We'll see when we get there I guess. But then, that's half the fun of any journey...the getting there.

I'm really good at

Art, politics, literature, music, humor. I love to talk about most anything. I'll debate if need be, but it's not necessary for me to always be right. I can, however, be a sarcastic witch at times...

Just don't make me break out my flying monkeys.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I haven't a clue. I don't usually ask about things like that.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Anne Rice novels, Laurell K. Hamilton novels, Kim Harrison novels, historical non-fiction and historical fiction, science non-fiction, science fiction, mystery novels, and adventure novels. The "Classics". And yes, (sigh) I do enjoy the occasional romance novel.

I enjoy all types of movies; my favorite genres are adventure, drama, comedy, and fantasy. I love vampire movies. I like documentaries. I like Chinese cinema and Bollywood films. I enjoy foreign films and don't mind reading subtitles. I wish I spoke another language, the little bit of Spanish I learned in high school has mostly deserted me now.

I'll listen to ALMOST any kind of music. I enjoy heavy metal, goth, hard rock, techno/dance/club stuff, Mozart, Scottish and Celtic folk music (including bagpiping), some Broadway show tunes, Spanish folk music, a select few classical composers in addition to Mozart (he's the schiznitz for me), and the Dixie Chicks (are they still considered country rock?){{the only country anything I will listen to}}.

I am vegetarian, but am not opposed to others eating meat. I don't because I physically cannot. I don't object to cooking meat for others either. I try to find all kinds of new recipes from all over the world. I watch Anthony Bourdain on the Travel Channel for ideas of kinds of recipes I could possibly adapt for vegetarian cooking. And I watch the Food Network to find recipes. I come from a long line of traditional Southern cooks, so I can fry things up with the best of them, but I do try to be a little more healthy about the food I make and eat. But every once in a while you have got to let your hair down and go with fried green tomatoes, barbecued spare ribs (yes, there is a vegetarian version of BBQ'd spare ribs), fried okra, potato salad, and pecan pie...all washed down with properly-brewed Southern Sweet Tea.

The six (well seven) things I could never do without

My computer, my books, a house with a fireplace, good conversation, good friends, and family.    And hot water...greatest invention EVER (I added this after thinking about it for a couple of minutes...so sue me...I made it SEVEN things I can't do without...I'm a girl, it's my prerogative to change my mind or expand my definitions...LOL).  If hot water was a man, I'd marry it.  Cold where I am?... you might be asking yourself.  You betcha!

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Politics. Making the world a better place when I leave it than when I arrived. Raising all boats.

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably at home, on the computer or reading. Occasionally I will go out to a movie or dancing.  Though since I started back at school...Studying is mostly what I do...bleh.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I am not easy to get along with, but worth the trouble I think.

I'm saving money to get a couple of tattoos and some piercings, just 'cause I like them.

You should message me if

You are interested in friendship. I am not seriously considering anything other than pen pals or forum buddies. Sorry, just not the right time in my life right now...who knows six months or a year from now?
