Beauty Spot

The Appalachian Trail snakes its way up the grassy bald at Beauty Spot, which has an elevation of 4,437 feet and is located north of Erwin, Tenn. A cold front darkened the sky and put a layer of ice — also known as hoarfrost, wintertime’s equivalent to summertime’s dew — on the trees on Friday. The top of the bald provides a 360-degree view that includes Roan, Unaka and Black mountains. The Appalachian Trail is a 2,174-mile footpath that begins in Georgia and runs through Tennessee before ending in Maine.
