RIP PERCY POHARAMA
You will be in our hearts always...

We've had a huge unexpected loss at Taipa. Life Patron of the Club, Percy Poharama, passed away 6 June at his home. All our thoughts are with Mere and the Poharama family at this sad time. RIP Percy.
We will miss you!

Club-based speedway history started in the Far North back in the mid 1980’s. In the late 1980’s racing began on a track at this present site. This would not have been possible without the full backing of the Poharama Family. With their help this start led to the formation of the Taipa Stock & Saloon Car Club.
In the early days the track was likened to ‘two straights joined by a hairpin at each end’, and the track simply followed the lay of the land. Throughout the 1990’s the track was developed to its current configuration, with the now famous ’red clay.’ This particular clay has tremendous firmness, grip, and drainage, which provides excellent traction for acceleration and cornering.....drivers call it ‘awesome drivability.’
The Club became an Incorporated Society in 1999, and has continued to improve the track, the facilities in the surrounding course, and safety features for the benefit of everyone involved in the sport of speedway at Taipa.
Taipa Stock & Saloon Car Club and Kaikohe Car Club, and now Whangarei Saloon & Stockcar Club, have become members of the Circle Track Racing Association in recent years. CTRA was started by Barry Butterworth (well known and successful Auckland speedway racer) back in 1987.

CTRA provides national parent body support and general rules for all its affiliated clubs. Our thanks to Kaikohe Car Club, and Whangarei Saloon & Stockcar Club, members for great support over past seasons!
New racers and helpers are always welcome at Taipa Speedway. Our Club recognizes the continuing support of the Poharama Family.

Founder Members and Club Executive Members, Mere and Percy Poharama, are always involved....!!! We all thank them for their hospitality, enthusiasm, and involvement, in the club from year dot!!! (See History home page for Newsletter October 1992 where Percy was made Honorary Life Patron, and newsletter header showing Crunch Bradley's fleet of race cars.)

This site probably has more photos than words. We are drivers ourselves and always go looking for photos of our cars on the track....its very hard to see yourself when you're at the wheel...so look around and see if you have been snapped...enjoy! And there are always more to come...... If you would like copies of original photos taken by Carole Teixeira please email carole.t@xtra.co.nz

We do not have concrete...all you will meet if you 'oops' is dirt...and the odd tyre! Last Queen's Birthday Weekend (2008) our red clay track lasted two days (120 races), and had great grip to the last race. A big thanks to the club's track committee! It was the dirt track racer's dream!!! Over two hundred cars had the best racing of their season at Taipa! Come and join us at New Year or next Queen's Birthday for the best racing of your life!!! (A lot of great names in speedway racing have enjoyed Taipa over the years.)
