The world is becoming an increasingly divided place more than ever before.Over the last ten years the growth of inequality on a world scale has consigned more than one fifth of the worlds population to live on $1 or less a day, while the rich have watched their profits soar. The capitalist domination of the world means one thing only - continued misery and exploitation for millions of youth and workers throughout the world.
However this hasd not been met with silence.the last five years have seen a massive response in protest to the massive inequalitys of capitalism.A movement has begun in earnest against the system in many parts of the world with 300 000 marching in Genoa against the G8 , the rulers of the earths seven richest nations and against police brutality. Before the war in Iraq, over 150 000 came on to the streets of Dublin to show their disgust at our governments discarding of our neutrality, and America and Britains utter determination to invade Iraq,at all costs. It became apparent to us as young people that such wars are run solely for oil and profit and talk of liberation in such cases should be treated as falshoods and propeganda.
As it is obvious to us that a massive movement is under way against the neo liberal agenda of George W Bush and co, Large numbers of young people are also coming to the realisation that being against the system is all well and good.....but what is the alternative??
Large numbers of young people in Ireland are coming to the realisation that socialism is the only alternative.A system wherby the wealth of the world is recognised as the people that coexist on this planet, not numbers in a bank statement.A system where we share, not clamber over each other in the rat race for a promotion or a pay rise or whatever.Where the peoples of the world would not be pitted against each other in order to create profit, but we would share our knowledge and skills in order to create a better world for all.
In the year 2000,Socialist youth was created to offer young people a chance to fight and campaign for this alternative. We fight on a range of issues that effect young people, since being established we have received an unprecedented feedback from young people north and south who had grown tired of the fct that they weren't being represented anywhere.Since the war on Iraq,we have seen our orginisation grow and grow and have sponsered and setup walkouts in schools, and town protests across the country. We offer assistance to people across the island fighting racism, sectarianism, low pay and unemployment.
We oppose the domination of our world by the giant multi-national corporations and the system which actively maintains their rule.We are building a socialist alternative to the bankruptcy of capitalism, which can only offer offer us a future of poverty, exploitation war and misery to the people of the world,in other words no future.
Socialist youth is run for young people for young people. We have branches across the country, north and south, where members get involved and freely discuss ideas and activities. We are the youth section of the socialist party.Joe Higgins, the socialist party T.D for Dublin west has consistently fought for the interests of ordinary working people and youth and has been described as " the real opposition in the Dàil"
Socialist youth has recently set up a branch in Fingal, north county Dublin,in response to the lack of any real outlet to the concerns of young people. The walkouts in the schools in the area during the war in Iraq showed us,as young people living locally, that the concerns are there. If you are concerned about the issues that affect us as young people in Fingal, and the issues that affect young and old across the world, send a blank e mail to padraigreidy@hotmail.com with socialism as the subject or alternatively contact our Dublin centre atinfo@socialistparty.net tel 01 6772592
