About Us.

S.W. Tackle Developments was founded in 1981 by Phil Hyde, to professionalise what up until then had been an amateur activity...building surf angling rods. These were principally for himself, but as others saw the rods in use, and wanted something similar themselves, Phil became busier and busier. Phil entered several "Sea Angler" magazine casting events, gaining a coveted 200 yard badge in 1980, and was appointed a Sea Angler Casting Club Instructor in the same year. A move to the West country at Teignmouth was organised, and his first workshop was the front bedroom of his house.

Phil arrived just at the time when interest in casting had revitalised, and a few demonstrations of what his rods could do attracted considerable interest from anglers who simply hadn't seen anything like it before. The workshop became a hive of activity, with anglers coming and going, and drinking all the tea and coffee as they watched a bare blank being turned into an individuals idea of what a rod should look like.

The advice from the bank was "find some premises", so a shop was found in Paignton, fitted out, and opened in May 1987,selling sea and game tackle to go with the rods being built.  He has built rods for some famous names, among them the late John Darling, an old friend, Peter Shilton, and several Political figures who I cannot name.

Around 1995, a partnership was formed with Julian Shambrook, who wanted to learn about rods and rodbuilding. He has since leaving set up his own rod company, needless to say I didn't show him everything!! He occasionally asks if I can do repairs for him if he is pressed for time.

A new premises in Winner Street was moved to, where Phil currently works.
