Background
I am a Dutch woman of 31 years of age. At the beginning of August 2007 I moved from the Netherlands to the UK. I live with my British partner in Gloucester.
Since September 2007 I work on Saturdays as a primary teacher at a Dutch language and culture school in Chester. There I teach children, who are related to The Netherlands, the Dutch language and culture. We use an official Dutch primary school method and are monitored by the Dutch education-inspection.
During the week I work as a private tutor. I help children, who are in key stage 1 or 2, with a subject or skill they find difficult.
Before I moved to the UK I worked for 4,5 years as a teacher at a Dutch primary school for special education. I taught children with learning difficulties and/or behaviour problems. Before that time I worked as an employee in communication and as a management assistant.
I am a native Dutch speaker, but also fluent in English (verbally and written).
Education
I have two Dutch degrees in Higher Professional Education:
* PABO Teacher’s Training College – Primary Education
* Facilitary Services – Consumer Affairs
Personal view on learning
The following three aspects are very important and are conditions to develop: Safety – Confidence – Independancy. I find it important that a child feels safe during tuition and has confidence in himself/herself , the tutor and the situation, and feels independant. Only when those conditions are achieved a child is able to learn and develop. I look at someones aim(s) and abilities and adapt my tuition on those aspects. Together we try to take the next step on the ladder.
I also believe in 'learning by doing'. I use different types of material/objects and activities to visualise what the child is doing. For example: abacus/coins/fraction-pieces/box of eggs for maths, pictures and stories for understanding and expanding the vocabulary, games to practice.
If you want to learn a language it is important to practice it as often as you can and in different circumstances, preferably with a native speaker. I adapt my language lessons on to someones aim(s) and use a variety in teachingmaterials (childrensbooks, Internet-exercises, songs, verb- and wordlists, household items).
