Hop aboard one of Canada’s last remaining authentic steam-powered
trains and climb the Gatineau hills as did the pioneers at the turn of the last
century.
Built in 1907, the country’s oldest excursion locomotive carries thousands
of visitors, railfans, nature lovers and adventurers to the picturesque tourist
village of Wakefield.
Relax comfortably in climate-controlled cars and let the sounds of the steam
whistle and the “clickety clack” of the wheels carry you back to
a by-gone era; a memorable and fun-filled journey for the entire family.
.........or take a drive to the village of Wakefield, 20 minutes from the cottage. Also in close proximity are small restaurants and a grocery store in the town of St. Pierre de Wakefield.
•The eighty acres of Carman Trails in Wakefield has a common boundary with Gatineau Park which is a National Park with 270 kilometres (160 miles) of trails which offer excellent walking in Summer and Fall and World Class cross country skiing in Winter. One of the World Loppit (Championship) races is held in Gatineau Park.
•If you drive into Ottawa, (40 Minutes from the cottage) visiting the Parliament Buildings is a must. They are a superb blend of Scots and French architecture. The interior of the Library of Parliament is lined with Canadian white pine. That is the oldest part of the complex. Outdoors, behind the Library is a terrace with an excellent view of the Ottawa River, which was part of the transcontinental highway before railways.
