If you haven't heard of fan fiction before, be careful! I mean, it's addicting!
The best site (in my opinion) for Newsies fan fics is www.FanFiction.net. You can find the best stories there, and there are a lot of genres. For your help, I have some questions that you might have about fan fics... they're mostly ones I've heard people ask, or that I wondered about when I first started to read fan fics. Oh, and I DO actually know what I'm talking about here don't worry (I have an account on fanfiction.net - Sweets09 - if you were wondering).
What is Slash? - Slash is a boy-boy relationship, and I suppose girl girl, too. (Though for Newsies, that doesn't ever happen -that I know of). Some people like it, and some don't. I, personally, for the most part don't have a problem with it. Sometimes, the stories can be pretty unrealistic, though (it woudn't have been acceptable during the newsies time). The specific name for each is as follows, from most common, to least common- in my opinion- (in parantheses is the pairing):
--Sprace or Spracetrack (Spot/Race)
--Blush (Blink/Mush)
--Javid (Jack/David)
--Sputchy (Specs/Dutchy)
--Spittery (Specs/Skittery)
--Jacktrack (Jack/Race)
--Snittery (Snitch/Skittery)
--Jackpot, Jack Conlon, Spot Kelly, Santa Fe Slingshot (Jack/Spot) for this one, no one really has a specific name made up, but the ones I have are the most used.
--Black (Blink/Jack)
What is a One-shot? - A one-shot is a short story (or 1 chaptered). I believe it's called a one-shot because it's basically opportunity to get the story out there, and it doesn't keep going like a chaptered one.
What's up with the modern day stories? - It's taking the newsies characters and their personalities and writing a story of them living in our time and going through the type of problems that happen these days.
Which is easier to write, historical fictions (set in or around 1899 - the movie) or modern day? - Hmm... it matters how much work you want to do. If you're just starting out, you may find modern day easier because you really don't have to look up much. For historical fictions you have to look up more things, just to make sure all of the details are right. So I would say that makes it harder to write. Historical ones, are usually set either a little before or a little after the strike, so you know a lot of what's going on before hand, which can make them easier. Honestly, it's probably just personal preference.
What's a Mary-Sue? - Somehow, I knew this question would come up. (but, uh, I wrote this so I guess that doesn't make sense, hmm?) It's really a good question that takes a TON of explaining, but never fear, I look out for you guys, and I've condensed it down into a small amount. A Mary-Sue is perfect, and has no flaws. She's usually short and sometimes *gasp* even resembles the author (or who the author wish she could be). They all have family issues. And by issues, I mean that her parents are probably dead, or her father raped her and her mother before he killed her, but she got out and now he's looking for her to kill her too. I think you get the picture, right? She also is stubborn, and whenever she gets into a fight with the newsies, she wins. Even though she gets the newsies mad, don't worry, they'll still love her no matter what. You get the picture?? Oh, and if you write a time-travel story, just be warned that your character is most likely a mary-sue. Sorry, that's just how it goes. Which leads me to...
Why don't people like time travel stories? - Oh, I like them!
Maybe that's just because my first fan fic WAS a time travel story so I'm biased... but I think maybe people don't like them because they really could never happen. (Or can they?). And the girls in them who go back in time or meet the newsies in this time are usually so perfect. *sinks in seat* Mine were... but I've gotten over it, and now I'm trying to save you guys from that. So don't make them perfect! People DO have flaws! Other than that, I think people don't like them because for the most part, every one is about the same thing. Newsies fan meets the newsies, one newsie and the said newsies fan fall in love, and live happily ever after. Some do differ, but not by much.
There you have it, folks!
Here are some of my personal favorite Newsies fanfics. I've included the link to each and every one of them for you guys (and gals) to use. They are sorted by what type they are, with my own personal comments about them in italics.
Time Travel
Azure & Loud Mouth's Excellent Newsies Adventure! By: JulesReverie - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1218906/1/ This is a well written time travel story. If you're looking for a humorous time travel story then this is for you! The things that they go through are so funny!
Through the Hourglass By: Raeghann- http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1063853/1/ If I had to choose my absolutely favorite time travel story, this would have to be it. As cliched as it sounds, this actually made me laugh and cry. The author is working right now on an "Author's Cut" version of this, because it was so popular and she wanted to change a few things.
Slash
Warning: For the sake of not offending anyone- If you do not know what "slash" is, make sure you read about it above.
(Another) Warning: This story is rated "M". That means, don't read it if you know that you shouldn't! Everything You've Done Wrong By: Sloanne (or rather, the authors Funkiechick and StudentNumber24601)- http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1489593/1/ This is probably my favorite slash story. It's VERY long (around 600 pages, I believe). I don't want to give away who pairs with who, but just trust me that the story is good. It's a bit mature around parts (that would be why it's rated "M") just to warn everyone.
Historical (Newsies time)
Old Friends By: Quirky Del- http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2822369/1/ I absolutely adore this story! The author wrote this so well. It's a normal historical newsies story, but it's so much more. She's working on a sequel right now, called "Frozen Pulses Flutter", which is also awesome!
