You may not think of Sutton as the most bird-rich area in Britain, and you are correct, but it does often turn up scarce birds (see above for example!) and always has something of interest to see. This website provides informations on latest bird sightings in Sutton, Carshalton, Cheam, Banstead, Epsom etc and birding locations in the area. Contributions are very welcome so please send us your photos/sightings of birds in the area (see below).
Updates: Howell Hill SWT info added to Priest Hill page, Kestrel photo added, Best of Sutton 2008 collage added to homepage, sightings updated as usual
Send your images of birds or locations to suttonbirding@surfbirder.com and they will appear on this website.
Submit your sightings of birds in and around Sutton by using the 'Submit sightings' page.
Introduction to the Sutton area
The Sutton area shown on the sightings map of this website is for the purposes of choosing which sightings to put on this website only and not for any formal recording purposes. The area covers a fairly large area, certainly including much more than just the town of Sutton and its surrounds. The area is roughly 5 or 6 miles across and about 8 up.
In the area there is a range of habitats, theres plenty of scrub, woodland, grassland, several parks, one or two substantial bodies of water, farmland and downland. A lot of the area is underwatched even though there is plenty of potential for turning up scarce birds.
Migration is well pronounced in the area, raptors are well recorded in spring and autumn as are passerine passage migrants.
Beddington SF is the start location of the area and turns up many good birds, it is covered well throughout this website.
