The 2008 National Sussex show is all over now with a good number of entries and also interest from a lot of visitors on the day. It was judged by Mr. John Graveur (N.S.W.) who Inspected each bird very carefully before coming up with his decisions for each award.
Judges Report (excerpts)
A Good size line up in excess of 130 which I believe to be the largest line up ever assembled in Australia along with Poultry 2000 in Canberra where numb
ers were similar. The Colours other than Lights would be the largest numbers ever seen under one roof to the best of my knowledge.
Only a few large Buffs with a good size Hen being the best although lacking a little in condition and colour.
Coronations had some nice females with good colour and presentation. Best went on to be Reserve Champion in Show. Only lacking a little in size and length but shown to perfection.
Large Lights were a mixed bag in many regards. Winning Hen had great length and size but needed attention to preparation including a beak trim. The three placed Cockerels were clear of the rest of the class many of whom lacked size amd type. The winner was Best Male in show and excelled in type being long deep and broad in the right proportions.Large Pullet class of 20 with the top two standing out for type, colour and presentation. Both lacking some head points in particular light eye colour. Winner was best in show.
Large speckled show some merit but need more work on getting larger size and more distinct colour pattern clearly showing the three colours in the right proportions. One female getting close.
Some good type large silvers that are on the dark side in colour. More silver markings needed and some more size.
A couple of Large reds that represented a reasonable start for this very rare variety.
Bantam Buffs were an impressive line up especially the males which were a little better for type and condition than the females. Colour of both males and females was generally good.
Best Silver in show was a nice bantam male which showed abundant clear silver markings. Reasonable type also.
Light bantams were a fairly good line up. Some good Hens with the winner being reserve bantam.Very close to the pullet for overall champion but going off condition somewhat. Nice type and colour. Cockerels were generally a little narrow and or tall in type which is a common fault however still some reasonable specimens. Large class of pullets with two stand outs that battled for top honours. Winner displayed slightly better all round type. Went on to be Champion Bantam overall.
A Few whites which were fair in quality but need more work to establish true Sussex type.
In summary a commendable effort for the first show and plenty of scope to further increase numbers with the variety of colours represented.
