Family History

Although not related to this Steer family I have done some research on it, as I have with all the Steer families in Wisborough Green. It is not complete so I would welcome comments, corrections, additions. I have further information on Henry and poor relief, and also his son James's descendants in Australia. Please e-mail me martis1@hotmail.co.uk

Henry Steer was poor. The baptism record of more than one of his elder children described him as a pauper, which meant receiving parish relief. Some of the poor law records for Wisborough Green have survived and give a good idea of the sort of help he and his family received. Sometimes farmers were subsidised for employing men; on 3/4/1818 and 24/6/1818 John Hard was given two shillings for employing him for two days. More frequently Henry was given direct payments, often during the winter thus in January and February 1816 there were frequent payments ranging from 2s 6d to 4s a time. Relief was often given in kind. For example 1/9/1800 he received a small cloth for a child to the value 6s and a bushel malt for his wife (Hannah would have been pregnant with Stephen at the time). On the 3rd November
1800  Henry was given 5s for paying a nurse (Stephen was born 17 November)  and on the 1 December1800 he was given a pair of shoes for his wife; 5 August 1801 a pair of shoes for a son; 12/3/1801 Henry waistcoat himself
Many if not all of his children would have been apprenticed out by the parish when old enough, probably as farm or domestic servants. The following gives a good idea. 10/5/1830 for keeping Hannah Steer [Henry’s daughter] to George Chapman payment £1-4-11, deficiency in value of clothes 5s 11d, total 18s 1d. Inventory Hannah Steer’s clothes 18/1/1830: 4 gowns and 1 at home, 2 upper coats, 2 under coats, 2 changes, 1 pair cotton stockings and 1 pair worsted, pair shoes, 6 caps and 3 night caps, 20 stays, 5 aprons and one at home (value 8s 1d)
By 1828 matters seem to have got worse and the family had been admitted to the Poor House; 14/4/1828 admitted Henry and Hannah Steer with Elizabeth, Zebedee and Mary.  Henry and Mary left 18th April and on the 21s  Hannah Zebedee and Elizabeth were ordered out. Henry may well have been quite ill by now, he was buried in the June. But why weren’t Lydia and Job admitted?
