1841 census: Widow Sarah and Thomas Challen residing Staple Ash Farm, Chilgrove. Thomas an agricultural labourer. With them Richard Challen and their sons Thomas and George Challen.

1851 census: Sarah and Thomas Challen residing Brooms, West Dean. With them lodgers Daniel Daniels 27 agricultural labourer, Thomas Putman 35 agricultural labourer, James Putman 70 pauper

1861 census: Residing Chilgrove. Occupation: agricultural labourer. With them boarder James Goble 69 woodman

1871 census: Sarah and Thomas residing Yew Tree Cottage, West Dean. Occupation: agricultural labourer

1878: 26/3/1878 Thomas Challen buried West Dean from Chilgrove

1881 census: Sarah in East Preston Union workhouse, a widow aged 90, place of birth not known

1884: Sarah buried 23/10/1884 West Dean from Littlehampton Union
