Born: 1743 Heene, Worthing
Married: 1776 Broadwater Ann Randford
Died: 1800 Broadwater
James Nottingham was baptised 15/9/1743 at Heene Church. He married 7th July 1776 Ann Randford in Broadwater Church. James is by now living in West Tarring. The marriage was witnessed by Edward Willard and Joshua Page. Banns were only read in St Andrew Church West Tarring once, on 16 June. James was then recorded as coming from Heene. James died 22 January 1800 and was buried 27/1/1801 at Broadwater Church. A headstone for James and Ann at Broadwater church was erected in 1836 ‘sacred to the memory of James Nottingham who departed this life on the 22nd of January 1800 aged 57 years also Ann wife of the above who departed this life on the 13th of March 1836 aged 87 years’.
Go East young man
It was to the east not west that the young Nottingham men went. For Peter it was admittedly not far, the mile or so to Sompting, neighbouring on Broadwater. Peter’s eldest brother Robert married Sarah Phillips in Hastings in 1806. I have not found any children of this marriage to date. Brother James however produced a large family in Rottingdean, the little village well accustomed to smuggling on the other side of Brighton. He and Mary Pope whom he married in 1813 had 11 children. Seven of their children died young, six under 6 weeks and one aged 7. Of the surviving four the two daughters Elizabeth and Frances (eldest and youngest surviving children) married and settled in Brighton, son James, a carpenter, born 1823 moved his family to Lambeth between 1857 and 1860. Only son Thomas b 1832 a bricklayer’s labourer remained in Rottingdean and as his seemingly only child died aged one in 1870 the Nottinghams in Rottingdean died out with his death, though this wasn’t until 1909. Peter’s youngest brother Joseph born 1797 was in 1841 living in New Shoreham, a labourer. His death is recorded in Worthing 1868, but where was he on the 1851 and 1861 census? His wife Kezia described herself as married in 1851, but was living with their daughter Mary in Brighton.
