The vacancy had occurred when ‘John Humphreys, one of the sergeants at mace’ was nominated ‘by the mayor…to be keeper of the city goal in place of Richard Tigge resigned’ 1800:. An entry in the Chichester Council Minute Books 7/10/1800 reads ‘Gaoler and sergeants at mace John Humphreys, Thomas Webb, David Diggens and John Bridger, were sworn and tendered their respective sureties’. 1814: John was described as a ‘Town Sergeant’ in the baptism registers of Charles and Edward 1819: ‘One of the Mayor’s Sergeants’ living in North Walls at Robert’s baptism. Occupation: publican. Harriet Boxall female servant 15, Thomas Triggs 15 labourer and Emanuel Radburn from army living with him 1843: 25/3/1843 Brighton Gazette. Henry Heath was charged at City bench with assaulting James market toll collector. In default of fines of 5s and 11s costs he was given 14 days in Petworth House of Correction. 1845: 25/1/1845 Hampshire Advertiser. NCOos of 55th Regiment Chichester Barracks gave Friday last a ball and supper in Assembly rooms ‘the supper and other refreshments were furnished abundantly and of first-rate quality and served in excellent manner by Mr James Bridger of the Little Anchor 1849: 6/10/1849 Hampshire Advertiser. A private of the Coldstream Guards Chichester Barrack Robert Thompson was charges by James with having stolen a copper coffess pot. At the City bench the charge was proved and he was committed for trial. On 4/10 Brighton Gazette had said this crime took place in the Tap Room, the defendant was drunk and the item found in his pocket when he was leaving the Little Anchor North Street. However at the quarter sessions as reported Brighton Gazette 18/10/1849 Robert was only one of two on trial and ‘in both cases the bills were ignored,. 1851 census: Residing North Street, Chichester. Occupation: victualler. They had a young female servant, a pot boy, two commercial travellers in cloth and a retired victualler living with them 1861 census: Widowed James residing North Street. Occupation: corn merchant. As well as family members he had a female servant and errand boy. 1867: 26/3/1867 Eliza Dunnaway 16 his servant charged by his wife Anna with staling money (cpper coins) cigars and a pack of cards locked in a chiffonier for which she must have copied or found a second key. She had been in Anna’s employ before but dismissed for dishonesty, taken back on her mother’s pleading. At City Petty Sessions she pleaded guilty and given six months hard labour (Chichester Express and West Sussex Journal 26/3/1867 p2) 1870: Hampshire Telegraph 8/1/1870 Stephen Woodland horsedealer was indicted for stealing a sovereign belonging to James on 24th December 1869. 1871 census: Widow Hannah residing North Street, Chichester. Occupation: corn merchant. With her Alfred John Bridger, his wife Kate and granddaughters Emily and Annie James was also lessee for tolls at Chichester market.
