Sugar Gliders - Tiny Pets and What They're About

Welcome! - This website is still under construction -

Sugar Sliders is being developed in the hopes of educating, informing and helping the Sugar Glider owner. All information on this website comes from thousands of hours of research and personal experience in owning Sugar Gliders.

Please know that any health information is not final word. Please consult an Exotics Vet in your area for further information on how to help your sick pet.

About me:

I lived in Dallas, TX, for the majority of my life, but at the age of 25 I decided to move to Ohio to be with my boyfriend, David. One day, while looking for a job on Craigslist.com, I stumbled upon an ad that said, "Twin Girls - Sugar Gliders". I opened it and found a picture of a small, fuzzy animal that was barely as big as a human's thumb. I fell in love and showed David, who agreed that this animal was amazing.

After contacting a small-time Cincinnati breeder, I found that I had over a month to prepare, as the joeys were only a couple weeks out of pouch. I would have time to get a cage, a diet in order and think about what they'd sleep and play on. I researched, and found a great website called Glider Central. I lurked, gathering any information I could, and eventually thought I had enough knowledge to own a sugar glider:  I was wrong.

Within the first 3 minutes of bringing home the twins, Kite and Pegasus, I found that my cage bars were spaced too far apart, and that the spot I had picked for them in the living room wouldn't do because our French Bulldog took more of an avid interest in our new family members than I had anticipated. The gliders quickly escaped their cage and were almost eaten by the dog.

I zip-tied the too-wide bars closer together and moved them to the bedroom, where I hoped the atmosphere would be a bit safer. Unfortunately, my new pets still escaped. Glider Central was my only place to turn for help on the situation, and though the answers I received seemed unfriendly, I now know that they knew best and were only anxiously trying to help.

They suggested that I use my bonding tent for temporary housing until I found a suitable cage for them. After that, everything was smooth sailing. I had a place that I could educate myself, I had friends that knew what I was going through, and most of all, I knew my pets better now.

I hope that I can help you in your journay toward sugar glider ownership and hopefully prevent you from making the same mistakes, and having the same scares, that I did.

Please educate yourself before purchasing one of these beautiful, smart and loving creatures. They can be the best friend you've ever had, or your giver of puncture wounds to the finger. It's your choice.

Welcome
