Let me introduce myself.

My name is Sue Bryan                                                                   

I am an avid birder whose interests in birding started from an early age. I can remember that at the age of seven, I had a Waxwing feeding on the Cotoneaster of my garden wall and rushing for the Observer book of Birds in the hope of identifying it, only to find the illustration was on a black and white plate. Still I was confident that I had identified correctly. My interests in wildlife were encouraged by parents who bought me books, as well as a father who made me a bird-table and took me on cycle rides to 'see what we saw.' My mother meanwhile put up with all sorts of 'creepie crawlies' in my bedroom as well as rotting leaves and seeds on my nature table.

Since then I have travelled all over the world birding and wildlife watching from Africa to Asia and South America to Antarctica. I have also done many pelagics worldwide with my daughter who has an interest in cetaceans.  At Easter 2005  I travelled to Brazil where I mainly concentrated my birding in coastal forests. I also took a flight to Iguacu Falls for the Dusky Swifts that roost behind the falls as well as a short visit to Paraguay. Later in the year my son Jonathan and I took a trip to Arizona, where we were lucky enough to see young wild Californian Condors from the introduction scheme in the Grand Canyon. 

 

In 2006 I flew to Finland to see 'The Owls'; to Peru to see a much wanted Cock of the Rock at a Lek; and to Spain to do a bird survey. In 2007 a short visit to France to see a much desired Wallcreeper was followed by a visit to India to see a tiger in the wild at Easter. During my summer holidays I flew once again to California to try my luck at pelagic birding and my quest to add some more cetaceans to my list. My ultimate quarry was seen on my final boat trip as a Blue Whale surfaced not far from the bow of the fishing boat. It had a real WOW factor! At Christmas I flew to Ghana where Paul and I went in search of the mysterious White-necked Picathartes deep the tropical forests hiding in caves.

By profession I am a teacher and have run a birdwatching club for the children. They remind me that a Robin in Norfolk can be just as fascinating and endearing as a Zig-zag Heron in the Ecuadorian Rain Forest (my thousandth year tick in 1997).  I have also worked for Norfolk Wildlife Trust as an Education Ranger taking groups around the reserves on guided walks. I have spent many pleasurable hours watching birds in their various activities as well as helping the beginners with their identification skills.

I take part in many bird surveys and have spent many happy hours helping with the recent Norfolk Bird Atlas Survey work.

I belong to West Norfolk RSPB members group and to NarVOS (Nar Valley Ornithological Society) where I give talks/slide shows on my various birding trips including Antarctica.

I am willing to act as a bird guide at the weekends or give slide/talks in the evenings in Norfolk for a reasonable rate. My E-mail address is Sue@klmatrix.co.uk
