C5-R # 2 - 1999 Rolex24 at Daytona

1:1 Car Info

Model Info

Team: Corvette Racing

Driven by: Ron Fellows (CDN)/John Paul Jr. (USA)/Chris Kneifel (USA)

The C5-R debuted in 1999.  Although it did not win, the Corvette Racing Team would gain valuable experience with the car to improve it for the 2000 race season.

(Autoart 1:18)

This is a beautifully made car.  Apart from the metallic flakes contained in the silver paint, it really is a well-crafted car.  The wheels and exterior overall are impressive.  The engine is a bit weak as it looks a bit on the plasticky side.

See details from above.

I found this model quite by chance since it's become quite a hard-to-find model.  It is every bit  a gem as the #2 sister car.  A real bonus with this model is that it was autographed by Andy Pilgrim and Scott Sharp.  The previous owner was a real racing enthusiast!

C5-R # 3 - 2000 ALMS (Texas)

Model Info

Team: Corvette Racing

Driven by: Ron Fellows (CDN)/Andy  Pilgrim (USA)

Result: 1st in GTS Class

This car represents the first C5-R to win a race.  This took place at the Texas Speedway in 100+ degrees F temperatures.  It beat out the venerable Team Oreca Viper GTS-R.  This would mark the beginning of a long successful career of the C5-R at long endurance races such as the Le Mans and American Le Mans Series.

I was lucky enough to get Ron Fellows to sign under the hood at the 2005 ALMS race at Mosport.  The next mission is to find Andy Pilgrim from the Speed Challenge GT series to co-sign it.  It will be complete then.

Update: I found Andy in 2006 at the Cadillac paddock!

This car has some features that are notably different from the older C5-R bodies.  Aa is to be given credit for doing their homework thoroughly.  As always, their craftsmanship is very good.

(Autoart1:18)

From the fact (1) it has no windows and (2) has those front "canard wings" (not sure of proper term), I believe Aa recreated this C5-R as it was setup for the 12Hr Sebring race. I'm not sure why there were no windows at Sebring, but my first guess is that the temperature was very high. So removing windows would allow for much better ventilation within the cockpit in an otherwise very hot interior. Remember, there's no air conditioning in race cars, only cool-suits for the drivers. The canard wings are for increased downforce. Aa's choice to make this version of the #3 is a good one as it won the GTS class at Sebring that year.

(Autoart 1:18)

This car is unfortunately made sealed.  Hopefully Autoart will not continue this way in the future.  That said, its exterior is very well done.  But unless you can find it for less than half the regular cost, without opening doors and hood, you're only getting half the car that the Autoart C5-Rs are.

(Spark Model 1:43)

Spark makes some amazing models.  They are resin models rather than diecasts.  Overall, the level of detail and quality of finish is very good.

The glaring problem is the box's sleeve shows that the base/plinthe has the autograph of Jean Christophe Bouchut where is should be S. Sarrazin.  Spark really needs to get things accurate.

Apart from that, the autograph of the legendary Henri Pesacarolo is on the box's lid, a very nice touch!

Spark makes some amazing models.  They are resin models rather than diecasts.  Overall, the level of detail and quality of finish is very good.  The metallic blue paint does not contain large flakes. The wheels are particularly well-made.

An amazing model that re-created the artistic livery on the car.

Children of Le Mans Link

New Zealand artist, Mark Olsen, was given the task of re-defining Creation's on-track visual appearance. Known for his trademark portrait style and not shy of using brilliant colours in his work, Olsen's approach to the new Creation was to place the car's 'livery' within the context of the countries visited by the Le Mans Series and the classic 24 hour enduro.

Set against a midnight blue pearlescent 'sky' filled with stars, Olsen has painted seven child-like portraits with features representing each individual country visited by these endurance machines. Titled "The Children of Le Mans", the mix of images is colourful, fun and unusual - particularly for a racing car.

Brazil, for example, is represented by a child dressed in a verdant green tunic, wearing a Toucan Hat (Brazil's national bird) with a pendant in the shape of a football. Italy's child is dressed in electric blue with a golden hat in the shape of the Coliseum.

This model is very unique because it is the only 1:43 whose engine cover actually opens up.  ALthough the engine is not full of detail the way you might find in a 1:18, it is still quite good when you consider what scale it is made in.
