Aston Martin

DBR9 # 58 - 2005 Le Mans

Team:  Aston Martin Racing

Driven by: T. Enge / P. Kox / P. Lamy

Result: DNF (327 laps)

(Autoart 1:18)

I bought this model because I found a pretty good deal.  Were it not for that, I would not have purchased this sealed model.  Having seen and heard the two Prodrive DBR9s at the ALMS race at Mosport in 2006, I had come to really appreciate that car, "lipstick" livery and all. Hahaha!  I went to find a model of the beautiful car as a "souvenir" in a loose sense of the word.

Some of the things that really attracted me to this mode included its well-done exterior (paint, proportions, wheels, tires).  However, it is still missing its "soul" as it does not reveal an engine nor do its doors open.  However, compared to iXO's 1/43 version, Aa's model is much more accurate with its ride height and the wheels' colour.  In addition, the metal flakes on the Aa model look quite proportionate.

In summary, it's a nice model if you already have sealed 1/43 cars but worth it ONLY if it is significantly discounted.

(Solido 1:18)

This model is what a 1:18 ought to be, one whose hood and doors open.  Unlike Autoart which had elected to make many of their modern racecars with sealed bodies, Solido decided to do the right thing and deliver this model to meet 1:18 collectors' expectations.  It is about 1/2 the price of a sealed Aa DBR9.  Technically, it would be considered as a budget model and it does not disappoint.  Its exterior and interior details are very well done.

Result: DNF - Broken Alternator (12 laps)

(Spark Models 1:24)

This was the very first 1:24 scale model.  This livery has always captivated me and that was my prime motivation for breaking into 1:24.

The model itself is quite well done.  But it is missing a couple notable details like the "Conversbank" logo on the vertical element of the spoiler.  It does appear the spoiler is pitched upwards slightly, which looks reasonably accurate to the 1:1.

Very good quality (paint, decals) for the price.

(AutoArt 1:18)

Though this model is sealed, the exterior details are done very well.  Comparing against its smaller 1:43 brother made by IXO, the proportions look a lot more accurate. Notably, the stance looks lower and the upright on the spoiler are better.

R8 # 77 - 2000 ALMS (Adelaide Winner)

1:1 Car Info Model Info

Driven by:
Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish

Result: Winner

This car raced on the difficult street circuit in Adelaide and ultimately a dominant victory for the Audi R8 at the final of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS - 2000) in front of about 150,000 spectators into a real highlight of the season. After a turbulent 5:45 hours, Capello and McNish won with a margin of 21 laps.

I found Allan McNish and Dindo Capello to autograph the car at the 2006 ALMS since they both drove the #2 Audi R10.  Thanks guys!

(Maisto 1:18)

Very good quality for a budget model. High points include: paint, tires wheels, removable engine cowl to reveal a well-detailed engine.

This has become a hard-to-find model.

IXO has done an excellent job with this model! The feature that sets this car apart is the fact the aerials are in proportion to the rest of the car. The paint is done very well and the whole package offers great value for the money.

(Autoart 1:18)

This is a sealed model but because I've loved this car for so long, it's one that I had to add to the collection. For the most part, it's very well made.  My only dissatisfaction with it is with the spoiler as it appears ever so slightly off-angle.  The red wheel-nuts also seem to be a bit off-colour.  All the photos I've seen of them seem to be more metallic looking and a bit darker.  As a result, I decided to blackwash mine so the red doesn't look so plasticky and bright.

The first thing I noticed about this model is its sheer weight(est 1kg)!  MC has done a remarkable job in modelling this famed racer.  It's exterior and interior are a sight to behold.  The outside is done professionally with tight shutlines.  The one shortcoming is their use of decals.  The slick tires look realistic but I thought the wheelnuts could have been made better.  Upon opening the doors, you are greeted by the view of shiney door sills, not something I expected to see in a race car.  Details like the exhaust system "shroud" that runs in the interior, fire extinguisher and instrument panel give the car a sense a realism.

(Kyosho 1:18)

Unlike the 2nd release of their 1999 Le Mans winner, this model is sealed and its engine cowl does not come off to reveal an engine.  The craftsmanship is pretty good overall.  One of the shortcomings it the use of decals throughout the car. There are two inaccuracies that I can spot (a) mirrors should be white and (b) missing black canard winglets on the front.  To Kyosho's credit, they made the exhaust pipes really well.  All in all, if the car can be found for a good price, it is a very nice addition to one's race collection.

Very good quality for a budget model. High points include: paint, tampo prints, tires & wheels.  The removable engine cowl is also a nice feature as it reveals a reasonably well-detailed engine.
