About
the Show
Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics brings to life the
beloved stories every child grows up on. It includes well-known tales such as
Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel
and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood. Also
present are some less familiar fables, including The Marriage of Mrs. Fox,
The Spirit in the Bottle, The Magic Heart, and The Hare and the
Hedgehog (a rendition of The Tortoise and the Hare). Each story is
told in an interesting and unique way; some of the details may be surprising
even to those who have heard the same story many times. And as always, each "Once
upon a time" ends happily ever after.
Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, based on the cherished
fables by the brothers Grimm, began as an anime series in Japan created by
Nippon Animation Company. An English version was produced by Saban Productions
and aired in the U.S. from 1989-1995 on Nickelodeon as part of the Nick Jr.
lineup. The series included thirty-seven full episodes, each one a different fairy
tale –
some of which were lengthy, so they were
divided into ongoing half-hour parts over several days. Grimm's Fairy Tale
Classics offers thoughtful and entertaining versions of the classic stories
enjoyed by people around the globe.

Lyrics
to the Theme Song:
Hey, come along and join the fun.
It's a time for fairy tales.
Magical kingdoms in the sun.
Come along, come along.
Meet friendly elves and witches too
In a world of fairy tales.
Enchanted castles wait for you.
Come along, come along.
To where life is a fantasy,
and every story ends so happily (giggles).
This is the place where dreams
come true.
A world of fairy tales for you. |
About
the DVDs
Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics is available in a
complete set of seven DVDs containing all thirty-seven (forty-three when viewed
in their original half-hour parts) episodes from the TV series,
plus bonus material available from this web site only.
Each DVD has menus with sound for easy selection of episodes. The set also
includes a professional DVD case featuring quality custom cover art and an
episode list insert.
This set comes on DVD-R, which will play on most DVD players as well as a computer
with a DVD-ROM drive and appropriate DVD-viewing software. I use only genuine
top quality DVD-R media from Verbatim, and occasionally Sony or TDK, for maximum
quality and compatibility.
The quality ranges from eight to nine out of ten
(see the screen captures
One
Two
Three
Four
for examples). This is not the same
six DVD set that is frequently sold on auction sites. For one thing, the auction set is not
even in true DVD format; the video files are actually in VCD format transferred
onto DVDs. That's why the actual fairy tales take up only slightly over three
out of six discs with miscellaneous shows filling up the rest, while mine take
up seven discs. The
auction discs' quality is inferior, and because they are not true DVDs, it is
more likely that DVD players will be unable to play them. However, my set is in
true DVD format and the episode quality is vastly
superior. The files take up more space because of higher quality encoding. My
set also includes an additional episode that the auction set is missing. You will not find a better collection anywhere. Take a look at the following examples:

My Set

|
| These are screen captures from
the DVD set I purchased on eBay. Many of the episodes suffer from the
problems you see above. The video source is very degraded, resulting in
washed out, yellow, or otherwise distorted coloration and picture. |
The above screen
captures are taken from my set. Using better sources, I was able to achieve
great improvement in quality in over 90% of the episodes and moderate
improvement in the rest. |
Updates:
9/3/11:
As of this date, my Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics set has been updated as follows:
•
Every episode in the set has been replaced or updated to a higher quality
version. The following episodes have been improved dramatically from their
previous versions due to higher quality sources: "The Water of Life," "Brother
and Sister," and "Bearskin." The following episodes have been improved
moderately due to higher quality sources: "Jorinde and Joringel," "Old Sultan,"
"King Grizzle Beard," "The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes," "The Faithful Watchmen,"
"The Six Swans," "The Four Skillful Brothers" (this episode now includes the
background soundtrack, which was strangely absent in the previous version of
this episode), "The Spirit in the Bottle," and "The Brave Little Tailor." The
remainder of the episodes have been improved slightly due to improved digital
restoration.
•
Added the lost episode "Bluebeard" which did not air on Nickelodeon due to
content.
•
Updated from a six-DVD set to a seven-DVD set.
•
Rearranged the episodes into correct chronological order according to current
sources, and updated the numbering of the episodes so that each half-hour part
is counted as its own episode (as was the case when the series originally aired
on TV).
•
DVD menus completely redone/improved.
•
DVD cover art has been updated and improved in quality, and episode list insert
has been redone to reflect the updated contents.

Return
Policy
All discs are checked to be in perfect working condition before they are
shipped, but in the unlikely event that any disc is damaged during shipping or
not functioning properly, you may return the faulty disc(s) and I will replace them for free. Due to the nature of these discs (in
that they can be copied relatively easily) and the fact that the price you pay
is for time and materials, I do not issue refunds, only
replacements. This is why it is important to read and make sure you understand all the information I have
provided about the product before ordering. Though it is unlikely you will have
any issues with my discs as DVD-R is compatible with about 94% of all DVD
players, please
do a search on VideoHelp's web site to make sure your DVD player will be able to play
DVD-R before you order.
If you do have any problems with the discs or need a replacement, I'm always available to help out
and answer any questions you may have.
