St.Silas FC

The team was started by Darren Darlow in 2002 from initially playing 5-asides as a way of getting the church into the community. The original members were: Colin McInnes, David Lawlor, Liam Hannah, John Wood, Darren Keith, Stephen O'Donnel, and Aston McLean.

With the help of Russell MacGregor, Iain MacRitchie and Ali Morrow, the team grew in number, skill and commitment to one another. As an 11-aside squad, the team joined the Strathclyde Evangelical Churches League in September 2004 in the third division. Other church members in the original line-up were Richard Grant, Richard Olyott, and of course him with the flowing locks, Graham Cuthbert.

The team is now over 25 strong and most players have joined through invites from friends already in the team. In the 2005/6 season the team finished joint 3rd in the third division of the league and runners up in the cup. The cup final match was the last time our top goal scorer of the season, Colin McInnes, ‘pulled on the jersey’, as sadly, he died a week later after an incident in the city centre on the Friday night. His loss was a devastating blow to the team as he was one of the original players and was responsible for many others getting involved on a regular basis.


Whilst the football ministry is particularly aimed at youths (over 14 years) and young adults, there are no age restrictions to being involved. In order to develop skill, fitness and teamwork, training takes place on Monday evenings at St Claire’s Primary School, Drumchapel, from 7-9pm (transport is available and leaves St Silas’ Church at 6.15pm). On Saturdays, we meet together for breakfast at St Silas’ Church at around 8am, leaving by 9am - in plenty of time for our pre-match warm-up routine! In addition to the scheduled league games, we also play cup games and friendlies—check out the website for regular updates.

             St Silas' Woodlands, Glasgow
Planted as an Anglican Evangelical presence in the city of Glasgow, the church has grown in its commitment to the Episcopal Church over the years but retains its status as a Private Chapel.
The congregation today is a lively mixture of people from all walks of life and parts of the world. The church has gone through some difficult times, and so is very conscious of its own weakness.
In the last ten years the congregation has grown significantly, and is committed to reaching out to the local area and beyond with the Gospel of Jesus. Many Missionary Societies are supported by the church through sending people from the congregation, finance and prayer.
The church is an enthusiastic member of the Prayer for the City network of churches, believing in God's power to transform the lives of individuals and communities.
We are also active members of West End Action of Churches Together. 

                                History

St Silas's was opened for worship in November, 1864. The building, which is now "B" listed, was designed by John Honeyman, who was also responsible for the design of the Mission Church in Hayburn Street, off Dumbarton Road in Partick. In 1910 a Mission Hall was erected in Ardery Street, west of Crow Road, also in Partick.
At one time over four hundred children attended the mission Sunday Schools, the largest membership in Glasgow. The missions were closed after the Second World War as the area became depopulated but many of the mission congregation transferred their membership to the mother church in Woodlands.
