PRAISE GOD AS HE BRINGS YOU THOUGH

Hermanese Lewis (left) & Rosaline Green (right)

"PRAISE  IS  WHAT I  DO..."

My name is Hermanese Lewis. I'm a 59 year old African-American female AND a FIVE TIME stroke survivor!  I am also the mother of three daughters, Etta D. Crosby (deceased), Tiffany A. Smith, and Rolanda S. Smith.  I have eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter on the way.

I'm a member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church, located in the city of San Bernardino, California, where Raymond W. Turner is the Senior Pastor

Let me start by saying I'm a walking and talking miracle!  I believe God healed me so I can share my testimony with other stroke survivors and their families.  There is hope and life after strokes!!!  That hope is in CHRIST JESUS!!

Isaiah 40:31 says, "But they that wait on the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings of eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."  Survivors, wait on the LORD, He has a plan and purpose for our lives.

From time to time I will share related Biblical Scriptures and information on strokes and strokes prevention.  I have Stroke Survivor Support meetings the first and third Tuesday of each month.  The meetings are held at the Temple Community Senior Center, located in the T. Hughes Memorial Building, 1777 W. Baseline Avenue, San Bernardino, California, 92411.

You can contact me at (909) 383-7252 or by e-mail: strokesurvivor56@netzero.com.

I look forward to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all interested Survivors and their family members.

I’d like to thank all my friends and love ones, (my children, Barbara, Ruth, and my Prayer Chain, Tatti, Pastor Turner, Angela, and my Temple family), for their love and support, and I humbly, give ALL HONOR and PRAISE to my LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, without Whom I could do nothing.

May God bless and keep you and please pray for this Ministry.

SIMPLE TEST TO RECOGNIZE STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.  Unfortunately, the lack of awareness can spell disaster.  The stroke victim may suffer brain damage if people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now, doctors believe anyone can identify a stroke by asking these three simple questions:

1)  Ask him (or her) to smile.

2)  Ask him (or her) to raise both arms.

3)  Ask him (or her) to speak a simple sentence.

If he (or she) has trouble performing any of these tasks, cll 9-1-1, immediagely, and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to familiarize themselves with these three questions.  Researchers presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting, last February.  Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.  I pray that this information will save a life, in JESUS’ name.  AMEN!!!

TYPES OF STROKE

1)  Ischemic

2)  Hemorrhagic

3)  Transient Ischemic (TIA)

In an Ischemic stroke, the blood supply to the brain is cut off because either arteriosclerosis or a blood clot has blocked a blood vessel.

In a Hemorrhagic stroke, a blood vessel bursts, preventing normal flow and allowing blood to leak into an area of the brain.

Transient Ischemic Attacks, (TIA'S), or mini-strokes, are temporary disturbances in brain function caused by insufficient blood supply to the brain for brief periods. The affected area of the brain, the length of time it is deprived of oxygen, and the promptness of treatment determine the degree of damage and disability from a stroke.

THE SIGNS OF A STROKE (OR BRAIN ATTACK)

a)  Weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side
     of the body.

b)  Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye.

c)  Sudden loss of speech, or trouble talking, or understanding speech.

d)  Sudden severe headaches with no known or apparent cause.

e)  Sudden unexplained dizziness, trouble walking, loss of balance
and coordination, especially with any of the previous symptoms.

COMMENTS, QUESTIONS OR ADVICE

YOU  CAN  CONTACT  ME  AT  ANYTIME!

God is ELOHIM, the Creator.  ELSHADDAI, the All-Sufficient One.  ELROI, God Who Sees.  ADONAI, Lord and Master.  I am just a servant; available to do His will.

My prayer for this website is to reach people all over the world.  Maybe something you read can make a difference as you recover.

James 5: 14-15 says, "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of FAITH shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him."  God's word is true you must BELIEVE!!!

After this last stroke, I couldn't speak, but I could hum.  Saints, God is so awesome!!!  I hummed and hummed and hummed. The therapist was amazed, so they used my humming as an exercise, until I could sing words, then sing sentences to communicate.  When I think of where I was, and where I am now, all I can say is “THANK YOU, LORD, I WON'T COMPLAIN!”

MY STROKE STORY and HOW GOD BROUGHT ME THROUGH

A year before I experience my first stroke, my oldest sister, Barbara, had one; she was 47.  Her stroke damaged the part of her brain that controlled consciousness.  The doctors gave her four months to live, but she lived seven years, in a comatose state, until her death in 1994.

I cared for her in my home and was warned by my doctor, two months prior, that if I didn’t take care of myself that I, too could suffer a stroke or heart attack.  How right he was!  Due to hypertension and stress, I had my first stroke; I was only 41years old.  The stroke weakened my left side.  I stayed in the hospital for one month and was in rehabilitation therapy for eight months.

God’s grace and mercy brought me through, along with a lot of love from my family.  Family support is very important to your recovery.  Praising God, through prayer and song works, too: BELIEVE ME!  God said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."  His Word is true!  As Paul said, “Every time I try to do good trouble abound."  When I got up, after each stroke, Satan would knock me down!

But, with Jesus’ grace, mercy, love, and faithfulness - I got up and stayed up!  Keep serving Him, Survivors, because it's not about US!!!  PRAISE HIM - HE'S WORTHY TO BE PRAISED!!!

ADDRESSING YOUR FEELINGS

I remember, after all my strokes, feeling sorry for myself. Why me?  I'm a good person.  I treat people the way I want to be treated.

Then, I thought, “Why not me!?”  Jesus didn't do anything, but He was crucified.  I’ve learned, reading God's word and spending time with Him, that our disappointments are APPOINTMENTS with Christ.  He can take our troubles, pains, heartaches and fears and use them for our good.  God says, “In all things give thanks.”

For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.  A very wise man says, “It's okay to have a Pity Party, just don't be the last to leave.”  It helped me to know it's alright to cry.  Crying is a form of release.  I'm learning to trust the LORD, more everyday.  That same wise man said," Trusting in God, is not having a "Plan B"!!!

Survivors, I pray that God will strengthen all of you as you go through this time in your lives.  Read Psalms 23!   You will find that you are not alone.   God will go THROUGH with you!  Cry, shout, throw things, but trust the LORD to see you through.  Also, share your feelings with your family or support group.

Please feel free to contact me so we can share and pray.  Most of all, I pray that Jesus Christ is LORD of your life.  That you believe in your heart and confess with your monuth, the LORD JESUS, and that God raised Him from the dead. (Romans 10:10-13).  That's GOOD NEWS!!

WHAT EVERY WOMAN NEED TO KNOW

The lack of awareness is frightening in view of the statistics,"says the American Stroke Association's Larry Goldstein, M.D. Approximately 700,000 Americans will have a stroke this year and more than 167,000 will die. WOMAN are at particular risk: 61 percent of stroke deaths occur in women, and about 2.4 million American women living today have had a stroke.

Another surprising finding was that readers  over the age 65 expressed less concern about their risk of stroke  than women 45 to 64, even though stroke is more prevalent at older ages..

This was an eye-opening survey, in the May, readers of WOMEN's DAY, ESSENCE and PREVENTION magazines.. The readers took a quiz to test their knowledge and awareness of stroke. Roughly half of the respondents

were either unaware of  for stroke or felt  they  were not at risk...

If you have parents or grandparents who had a stroke at a young age, especially if they were hemorrhagic strokes, watch out for the sudden onset of  unusual headaches. An aneurysm is hereditary, and headaches signal that it's about to burst.

"Headaches plus a family history of stroke may call for an MRI brain sca, which may detect such an aneurym, " says, Edgar J. Kenton,M.D., ASA spokeman.  "Quick surgical repair can save you from death or  paralysis."

RISK    FACTORS:

1. Age

2. Race

3. High Blood Pressure

4. Atrial  fibrillation

5. Smoking

6. Heart disease

7. Diabetes

8.History of stroke or  TIAs

9. High cholesterol

HEART DISEASE and STROKE: Changing our Focus from Intervention to Prevention from Sally Kaiser-Dryer,BSN,MA,International Heart Institute

Did you know that?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is America's#1 killer of men and woman.

Nearly one million Americans died fo (CVD) in 2000. Nearly half of those deaths occurred in women.

Women's heart are smaller than men's.

Chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease.

Signs and symtoms of a heart attack are often different for women than men.

Women are less likely than men to receive life-saving procedures such as clot-busting drugs and coronary artery bypass surgery.

San Bernardino County has the highest death rate from CVD of any county  in the state of  California.

Are you confused with all the information concerning  heart disease on the TV, in the newpaper, and on the radio?  Remember, each one of us has a different genetic make-up and it is very important  to identify your own risk factors for heaet disease and get these risk factors under control. Heart disease ia called the silent killer because most of the time the attacks come with little warning.  What can you do to lower your risk for a heart ayyack or stroke?

       1.  Educate yourself on your heart risk factors.

2, Get heart risk factors under control.(LDL " bad" Cholesyrol less than 100, Blood Pressure 120/80, Blood Sugar Fasting 110, Stop Smoking)

        3. Know which foods are deatroying the walls of your arteries and can lead to plaque rupture.

        4. Manage stress un your life.

         5. Know the signs and symtoms of a heart attack or a stroke for men and women.

         6.  Take heart medications prescribed by your  physician.

         7. Include exercise as part of your daily routine.

P.S,   Trust and Believe GOD is able  to change your condition.....
