FINDING A LITTER OF 5 KITTENS JUST 4 DAYS OLD LEAVES YOU IN A STATE OF SHOCK, AS YOU KNOW THAT THEY ARE FAR TOO YOUNG TO BE WITHOUT THEIR MOTHER. SO YOU RUSH TO YOUR PET SHOP AND BUY A BOTTLE AND SOME KITTEN MILK AND START FEEDING THE KITTENS EVERY 2 HOURS. AFTER A WEEK YOU START TO NOTICE THAT THE KITTENS' SKIN IS GETTING RED AND SCALY AND THEIR FUR DOESN'T LOOK HEALTHY, SO YOU GO TO THE VET TO HAVE THEM CHECKED OUT. THERE, YOU ARE ASKED WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN FEEDING THE KITTENS. 'LACTOL KITTEN MILK' YOU REPLY. WHAT COMES NEXT IS CERTAINLY UNEXPECTED. THE VET TELLS YOU THAT THE MILK YOU ARE FEEDING THE KITTENS IS CAUSING THIS REACTION AND THAT IT MUST BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. YOU ARE ALSO TOLD THAT ANOTHER PERSON HAD EXPERIANCED THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER FEEDING THEM THAT SAME PRODUCT. SO YOU BUY THE ROYAL CANIN BABYCAT MILK AND HOPE THAT THE KITTENS ARE GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT. UNFORTUNATELY THIS WASN'T THE CASE. OUT OF FIVE KITTENS NONE HAVE SURVIVED. THE KITTEN MILK HAS KILLED THEM AND WHO KNOWS HOW MANY MORE ARE BEING GIVEN THAT SAME MILK WHICH WILL SLOWLY KILL THEM TOO!
THIS IS NOT AN ADVERT FOR ROYAL CANIN. I AM JUST TELLING YOU WHAT LACTOL KITTEN MILK HAS DONE TO THESE POOR KITTENS. SO IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE FEEDING SOME KITTENS WITH THE SAME PRODUCT YOU WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE GIVING THEM THEIR NEXT FEED.
Here are a few points to keep in mind when adopting a kitten:
c On arrival, move gently and without shouting. Remember that your kitten has just been brought into totally unknown surroundings. Control your enthusiasm and avoid passing the kitten from hand to hand. This will only frighten the kitten and make it harder for him to settle down.
c Avoid any sudden change of food as you may risk causing digestive problems. Continue feeding him what he is used to eating and change over gradually over a period of 1 week. And always make sure that there is water available all the time.
c At the first separation and first time alone, the first night is often very disturbing for your kitten. He will cry for a while till he settles down and sleeps. When this happens just leave him alone. The learning period will generally last 3 or 4 days.
c Never wake a kitten while he is sleeping so that you do not affect his growth.
c When you notice any slight change in the kitten’s behaviour contact your vet immediately as this may be a sign of illness. The longer you take to see a vet the less chance of survival.
c Find time to play with your kitten every day.
c If you feel that you cannot look after the kitten any more please contact the person you adopted him from and they will take him back. Do not throw him in the street.
