Abominable Snowman :

is a creature usually described as a shaggy man-beast that is only ever briefly seen moving across snow swept landscapes, leaving behind very large footprints.  The abominable snowman is also known as the yeti.

Aliens

are creatures, or beings that allegedly come from outer space possibly from other planets, galaxies, universes or even different dimensions.  They are sometimes referred to as extra-terrestrials.  Some persons claim to have had encounters with aliens or beings from other planets, some individuals also claim that they have been abducted by them, see alien abduction.
There has also been much speculation about alleged government cover ups and conspiracy theories regarding both aliens and UFO's and the topic remains one of great debate.

Alma :

a creature reported to be of ape-like appearance that inhabits the mountains in central Asia, which was up until a few years ago part of the Soviet Union.

Although not as well known as the Yeti and Bigfoot stories about the Alma suggest that it is a creature more akin to a hairy human than an ape.

Alpine Tatzelworm :

is described as being between 60 - 90 cm or 2 - 3 feet in length and having the thickness of a man's arm.  The creature is believed to be an undiscovered species of amphibian or reptile. It is thought to dwell in the Swiss, Bavarian and Austrian Alps of central Europe.

The local people refer to it as the Tatzelworm (clawed worm) or stollenworm (hole dwelling worm).  There have been many differing stories about limb counts.  Some descriptions suggest that the species has only a single, front pair of legs, some say it has two pairs of legs and some say it has no limbs at all.

The general appearance of the Tatzelworm is likened to a worm-like lizard or salamander.  Some zoologists have suggested a link between the American Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) and the Tatzelworm.  The latter being a species of poisonous lizard.  There may also be a link with the grass snake (Ophisaurus apodus), a large legless lizard from southern Europe.

Ancestral Being :

are spirit entities from the early days of the world, according to the Dreamtime or Creation myths of Australia's aboriginal tribes.  Modern science dismisses these ideas as purely the stuff of fantasy but many aboriginals firmly believe in their continued existence.

The Wirajuri aboriginals from the central west of New South Wales believe in a hairy dog-like creature known as the mirri or mirriuula.  it is thought to frequent some of the lonelier regions and rivers.  Once seen these creatures are said to appear quite small but begin to grow before your eyes as you begin to stare.  danger is associated some mirri dogs because they are thought to follow their victims with a view to enticing them into the depths of their river or even killing them.  The Wiradjuri also believe in the yuurri which are hairy little men and women, with sharp teeth and long fingernails, standing approximately (3 feet) tall with the males having long beards.

Some tribes such as the Gumbangirr aboriginals refer to these tiny people as bitarr.  They are said to particularly enjoy playing with children.

The aboriginals of Victoria are familiar with some other types of mysterious pygmy people.  These include the nyols, stone-grey humanoid beings believed to inhabit caverns in deep rocks below the surface of the earth.  Occasionally it is said that they come out to play among the shadows of dusk.

The netnets are beings with long sharp claws living above ground in rocks.  The pot-koorok are described as looking like a small man-frog with great webbed feet, long mobile fingers and a wet pear shaped body.  This creature is said to dwell n rivers and deep pools.

More sinister is Old Red Eye a name given to an insubstantial entity, having only a vaguely human form.  It is said that it can mesmerize it's victims with the glare from it's red eyes as well as causing time to stand still for them.  Should they manage to scream they cannot be heard.  It is said that Old Red Eye can materialize at any time and anywhere.

Yara-ma-yha is said to be a 'merciless vampire' resembling a 'tiny toothless frog-man'.  he lives and jumps down on his victims from trees in order to drain their blood.

Animism :

a belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and all living things, a belief that everything possesses a spiritual essence or soul.  The word is derived from the Latin "anima", meaning soul.  It can also be the belief in the existence of spiritual beings that are separable or separate from bodies.  Alternatively animism is the hypothesis that an immaterial force animates the universe.

Anomaly :

Something that is out of place and unexplained. In paranormal studies, it refers to any phenomena that we cannot explain. Example: A lens flare in a photo is not an anomaly, but an orb that we cannot explain is an anomaly.

Anomalous Cognition :

a form of information transfer by an unknown means and without sensorial stimuli.  Some individuals are able to gain access to this information, but the process is not yet understood.  The term anomalous cognition is also known as remote viewing, clairvoyance, but more generally replaces the term of  ESP.

Anomalous Experience  :

is an umbrella term for types of strange or weird experiences which science does not yet fully understand or cannot yet explain.

Apparition :

a specter, ghostly figure or even a sudden or unusual sight.  The term apparition is usually another name for ghost.

Apport  :

is an object that is physical in nature and appearance, which has materialized apparently from nowhere.  These type of objects are usually associated with both physical mediums and séances.

Astral Body:

the word astral on its own means relating to, resembling or emanating from the stars.  However an astral body can be defined as the ethereal counterpart of a human or animal body.  In other words it is a supersensible part of the body which theosophists believe exists alongside the human or animal body and it is that part which survives the death of the human, animal or physical body.  It is also thought to be the supersensible part of the body used to travel on the astral plane and through the Akasha.

Astral Plane:

the word astral on its own means relating to, resembling or emanating from the stars.  The astral plane however can be likened to the Akasha, namely a place where all the thoughts, memories, fantasies and dreams of everyone in the world exist. The astral plane is thought to be a fantastic place to travel in, with many different travelers, entities and levels to it.  It is said to operate at a much higher frequency than the physical plane we inhabit.

It is thought that the etheric body, spirit or mind can travel on the astral plane which is said to appear more solid than the physical plane we all inhabit, this is because in order to travel it the etheric body has to be existing and operating at the same higher frequency.  The astral plane is believed to be far more mutable than the physical and is said to be changed and altered simply by the power of thought

Astral Projection:

is thought to be the process whereby our etheric body, spirit or mind separates from the physical body, whilst maintaining a level of consciousness.  Once separated from the physical body this etheric body then begins to operate at a higher frequency allowing it to travel on the astral plane.  This astral plane also operates at a higher frequency than that of the physical plane and can possibly be likened to the Akasha.  It like the Akasha is a place where all the thoughts, memories, fantasies and dreams of everyone in the world exist. The astral plane is thought to be a fantastic place to travel in, with many different travelers, entities and levels to it.  When astrally projecting it is believed that although the conscious mind tries to impose a 'body' on the traveler, he/she has no 'body' as such but can change their form simply by thinking about it.

When traveling on the astral plane it is said to appear more solid than the physical, this is because in order to travel it you have to be existing and operating at the same higher frequency.  The astral plane is believed to be far more mutable than the physical and is said to be changed and altered simply by the power of thought.  Some persons believe that they can achieve astral projection at will and there are many stories from persons claiming to have left their bodies, having operated and existed at a higher level.  In order to verify the experience and to ensure that the experience is not a dream, many persons engaging in this activity tend to project etherically first.  This is so that they can confirm they have really left their physical body and are not simply imagining the experience.

Aura :

an emanation, breath or radiation that is invisible to the naked eye. It is often thought to be an invisible surrounding glow emanating from each individual.  Some persons believe that they can actually see the aura of a person and depending on its colour and form, this is taken as an indication of the mental and physical well being of that person.  Kirlian photography deals with the supposed art of photographing this type of phenomena.

Banshe :

is a name given to a female spirit, which can be found in Irish and Scottish folklore.  The wail of a banshee is associated with the foretelling of an imminent death in the house, outside of which the banshee has previously visited.  An omen of impending death in a house, a banshee is a female entity said to herald death by groaning and screaming.

Bat Man :

is a bat winged humanoid and a phenomenon that comes from the Russian Far East around the Primorskiy Kray Territory.   A hunter called A.I. Kurentsov spotted the beast several years ago in the immense taiga forest as it flew over his fire. The bat man or letayuschiy chelovek, which translates, as ‘flying human’ is also famed for its eerie cry, likened to a woman’s scream but ending in a ‘lugubrious howl’.

Spectral Battles :

are rather dramatic examples of haunting ghosts.

    Beast of Bodmin Moor :

is a black panther like creature that is believed to inhabit Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.  Indeed there have been around 60 other big cat sightings recorded in the area since 1983 and experts believe there is a population of big cats in and around mid-Cornwall.  There have even been some sightings as far apart as Kent and Scotland.

Beast of Gévaudan

was described as being a huge wolf-like beast, which killed its victims 'by savagely tearing out their throats before devouring their bodies or simply ripping them apart'.  The beast came to public attention between June 1764 and June 1767 when a large number of murders (mainly women and children) occurred in Gévaudan, a place situated in the district of Lozère in south-eastern France.

In February 1765 King Louis XV sent a famous hunter called Denneval into Gévaudan with six highly trained bloodhounds to try to track down the creature.  Unfortunately they did not succeed.  However after two large wolves were killed in the area the murders finally ceased.  However there are some who believe that the beast was more than just a bloodthirsty rabid wolf.  In the book La Bête du Gévaudan a man called Gerald Menatory suggested that the killings may have been the work of one or a number of serial killers using the reports of man-killing wolves to cover their tracks.  There has even been the suggestion that the beast was actually a werewolf.

Big Foot  :

is the name given to a creature or creatures, thought to exist in wild and remote parts of North America.  These creatures are commonly referred to as Big Foot, but are known also as: Sasquach, Skunk Apes and Swamp Apes.  Apparently the first sighting of a Sasquatch by a white man happened in 1811 near what now is the town of Jasper, Alberta Canada. A trader called David Thompson found strange footprints, fourteen inches long and eight inches wide, with four toes, in the snow.  To date scientists continue to be defied by this creature and it has still not been positively identified by scientific authorities.  The animal is generally described as being large, hairy, around seven to nine feet tall, weighing between 600 and 900 pounds and ape-like in appearance, yet walking upright like a man.

In Canada the bigfoot is more often referred to as the Sasquach, which is Indian for "hairy giant" and the term is mentioned in several native American legends.

There is some evidence in the form of film footage, photographs, and casts of footprints to suggest that Big Foot or Sasquach exists.  However skeptics insist these are simply clever hoaxes.

In 1967 Roger Patterson took film footage of a large hairy creature reported to be a Sasquatch.  However, there has been much speculation that it may have only been Mr. Patterson's tall associate Jerry Romney wearing a fur suit.

Biker Ghosts

are ghosts which allegedly appear to be solid, real people and are said to hitch lifts with unsuspecting motorbike riders.  It is somewhat unclear whether or not this truly is a genuinely reported phenomenon or simply an urban myth.  Regardless of which is correct the accounts of biker ghosts usually follow in a similar vein:

Black Dogs :

There have been countless reports of phantom like creatures of canine form, which have been termed, black dogs, devil dogs or hellhounds.  Local names for these creatures from around the United Kingdom include:

Black Shuck – East Anglia

Skriker “howler” – Lancashire

Muckle Black Tyke – Scotland

Mauthe Doog – Isle of Man

Gwyllgi “dog of darkness” – Wales

Barguest – Yorkshire

Even though these creatures go by different names depending on their location throughout the British Isles they all share very well defined traits.

Allegedly they are as large as Labradors or Alsatians and are usually described as being black, often with shaggy coats.  They are said to exude a distinctly sulphurous smell and their crimson eyes glow like fire.  Although appearing to be solid they can apparently disappear at will, sometimes in a fiery explosion. It is said that anyone who touches one of these beasts usually dies shortly afterwards.  Even the act of seeing a black dog is believed to be an omen of doom.
