Doctor Who Time Switch

 EPISODE 2
The brigadier sighed and sat back in his seat. He had never felt this tired before or indeed, worried. What was wrong with his friend? None of the medical staff could ascertain what was wrong, and on the top of that they had learnt what had brought U.N.I.T out too this desolate part of the country. Localised electro magnetic activity had caused disruption to power supplies and telecommunications for a few days now. But E.M.P's weren't normally localised or concentrated like this. The main concern was of course that it might spread to encompass the entire country. They had been lucky so far, no planes had been brought down, and there hadn't been any near misses...yet. He slapped the folder down on the desk and rubbed tired eyes and reached for the coffee pot. It was going to be a long night.
Al sighed as he watched the Doctor pace up and down the white room. "Look Doc, that ain't helping any" he said wearily. "I've told you, don't call me Doc and if I don't pace or do something, I think I might just start climbing the walls! Look, what is going on here? Explain too me what this project is all about" Al sighed. This could take a while he thought.
Professor Irna locked the door of her porter cabin and switched on the lights. She removed her spectacles and shook loose her hair. Smiling she crossed the tiny living area and approached the inner door. It didn't lead too a toilet, instead it opened into another area, that was lit by a harsh light. She crossed the threshold and closed the door behind her as something screeched with impatience.
The Doctor/Beckett sat on the edge of the bed, with his eyes closed. Thoughts raced and collided with each other in his head. Images of Vietnam, Elvis in Memphis, a young retarded boy on a farm in Kansas all jostled for position in an already crowded mind. His Granddaughter Susan, the planet Skaro, Earth's lost twin planet, Mondas, all seemed surreal but he knew it was all real. It was all so confusing! What was going on? Who was he? What was he? Human...no I'm a Timelord! and on and on the debate continued, the war for control raged on.
Not far from the site of the neolithic dig, something began to pulse. The object that had been unearthed by the second team, was now glowing with a soft amber glow. Unheard by human ears, a signal was being transmitted too a group of creatures, hiding in the Earth's depths. Too anyone who didn't know better, the object looked like it belonged there, covered by the passage of time. In some ways that was true, but in others it was a million light years away from the truth.
The Doctor searched his memories. Yes, his people had probably been well aware of the project, but he couldn't recall hearing about it. Why keep quiet? Typical of them he thought and scowled angrily for a second or two. He was surprised that the Timelords hadn't interfered, made some attempt to halt the progress of the experiment or indeed, sabotaged it. Of course that may well have stranded or maybe have killed Doctor Beckett so perhaps some humanitarian had decided to let it go on. Or had they, and this was by far the most likely explanation, allowed it so Doctor Beckett could do some of their dirty work for them. Yes that would have been darned typical of the hypocrites. Still what was done was done. The Doctor had begun to realise that maybe some great good could come out of all of this. But first things first, the Timelord had an idea.
He had listened with great patience too Al's story about the project and now symapthised with the situation that Doctor Beckett was now in. Like he had had to play mental chess with the Master, Doctor Beckett had discovered that there had been an evil leaper at work, trying to alter history to suit his or hers dark purposes. Maybe that was why the Timelords had allowed it, after all the Doctor couldn't be everywhere at the same time. He faced Al and said, "I think it's time for some role reversal. You speak to Sam as his adviser? Then please, let me try talking too him" "I don't know, Sam is used to having me as his holographic guide, having you there while he is occupying your body, may do more damage than good" "All right" said the Doctor, "You try talking with him and me, and see what happens. But with me, my brain can communicate with the telepathic synapses in my mind and hopefully soothe troubled waters as it were" Al still didn't look sure, as the holographic projector was his baby, but maybe it made sense. He called out; "Doctor Swanson, prepare the Doctor for projection in five minutes. I'll see what Ziggy gives as a possible outcome." He tried to sound confident, but his mind was racing and his heart beat was going eight too the dozen....
The Doctor/Beckett lay on his bed, eyes tightly shut, arms ramrod straight by his sides. Suddenly his eyes snapped open and he sat bolt upright. Something was happening in the room. Without any sound at all, a doorway (for want of a better word) made of light appeared and through it stepped a figure. He shielded his eyes with a raised hand and almost cursed as he saw himself approaching! "Well well well, this is a fine mess isn't it? but don't panic, I'm here to help sort this mess out. Please don't speak, just listen. I am the Doctor, the 'real' Doctor so to speak. You are Doctor Sam Beckett and for whatever reason, you have leaped into my body. Now Al is trying to find out what you are here to do and once the task is done, you'll leap somewhere else. Maybe you'll leap home. As you are a time traveller, and time is my business, I may be able to help but I cannot guarantee that. Chances are there's something else going on as well, seeing as it looks like U.N.I.T is involved. Maybe the two are connected, who knows? but you have to concentrate and focus. Our two minds and bodies are linked, and the problem is that your mind is human, mine is not. The two need to talk, rather like two computers using separate operating systems and there's a conflict. Now relax and take a deep breath. I'm going to try something that will help us both."
"Freedom! we must have freedom! We must hunt, we must feed!" "But she wants us to stay hidden!" hissed another, "but that is not the way of the Vendar! we have come too far, listened too her for too long! Who is she to order the likes of us? hunters we are, warriors we are, conquerors we are! slaves we are not!"
The pulse intensified, the light from the object glowing ever brighter and brighter and then......SHUMMM! blue light pulsed, radiating outwards in a perfect circle. It covered the ground as quick as lightning, but as it did so it penetrated the earth too. Like a tidal wave it swamped the countryside and hit with ruthless force. Lights died, radio's fell silent, TV screens went blank, and engines cut out. And alas, in the latter case, the wave also went upwards, towards the skies. A U.N.I.T helicopter caught the full brunt of the wave. The engine died and the men's screams almost drowned out the sound of the air rushing past the cockpit as the chopper plummeted like a shot Grouse.
Below the surface of the earth, buried way below the transmitter, something else reacted. It sent a counter pulse through a swarm of Eel like creatures. They bared their fangs and hissed with one voice. They strained against the confines of their vessel, the vessel that had been home, but was now a prison. They hammered at the walls again and again, and their rage grew. But with each assault, the walls weakened; and unknown too them, there was now a hairline crack and it was growing in size with each attack.
Professor Irna swore in an ancient language as the latest attempt to placate the creatures leader failed. In a way she understood the reasons for their anger and in some way even sympathised with them, after all the last thing they wanted to do was to crash on this backwards planet at a time when England was still under the heel of the Roman Empire. Indeed the 'ship' had destroyed a Roman shrine upon impact, killing seven priests, and frightening off the settlers from the nearby encampment. The Vendar were trapped from that moment on, feeding on each other to survive. But being an asexual race, survive they did. Against all the odds they survived and tried again and again to break through the Ditrinium walls of their craft. Ditrinium was one of the strongest metals in the known universe. Even the Daleks had tried to gain control of the planetary system that had been surveyed and discovered to be one of the biggest natural sources for the metal. Only the intervention of the Galactic Federation had prevented the slaughter that would have ensued. But fall the system did. Some four hundred years later, the planet and it's sisters came under attack by the Slitheen although it wasn't a standard invasion. Through a mass swindle, the Slitheen forced the mining operation to hand over the entire operation lock, stock and barrel effectively bankrupting the planet.
Two minds became one. Synapses touched and probed each other gently and then carefully absorbed each other. Memories became shuffled, sorted and the refiled. More importantly two identities merged and then became capable of co existing. Waves of calmness washed over Sam Beckett's neural network.
Al sighed with satisfaction. The probability of Sam going insane had already fallen to under 45 percent, and it was steadily dropping. He smiled, "Way to go Doctor! you've done it! now all we have to do is figure out what Sam is doing there" he muttered softly and that could be difficult. It seemed that this Doctor guy, worked for some secret paramilitary operation called U.N.I.T, which was tied into the United Nations. Big problem though was that many of their files were still classified and encrypted. This was going to take time....
Now the Doctor stood upright and reeled again as the lights flickered and died. He frowned and used a wall to steady himself. A shout caused him to raise his head, the Brigadier was yelling; "Get those bloody lights back on! that's what they want us for? power cuts? that doesn't fall under our jurisdiction! Get the electricity board to examine the problem!" "Brigadier!" called the Doctor, "that was not a power cut, it was an electro magnetic pulse. The kind of thing that hits when there's a nuclear explosion" "Glad to see that you seem to be your normal self but really I know what an E.M.P. thingy is and what it does! so what would cause that?" "Obviously not a nuclear bomb" said the Doctor, "otherwise we wouldn't be here now. No, not a nuclear blast but something else, something that worries me a great deal"
Al shook Ziggy again and again and slapped the hand held device and swore. Damn the encryption! Oh sure they could break codes, but these codes were old and defunct a long time ago! But Ziggy was doing it's damned best...and now something was appearing....what? alien invasion? were they serious? but worse, far worse was the data coming through. Ziggy was now saying that there was at least a 60% chance that Sam was there to save the life of a Miss Sarah Jane Smith.......
