Requirements to Test to 9th Gup (white belt yellow stripe)

* New Patterns/Exercises
  • 4-Directional Punch (Saju Jurugi)
  • 4-Directional Block (Saju Makgi)

* New Kicks

  • Front kick
  • Jump-up front kick
  • Flying side kick
  • Step-in side kick

* Kicking Routine

  • Front kick
  • Round/Turning kick
  • Side kick

* New Hand Techniques

  • Front punch with forefist
  • Side block with inner forearm
  • Low block with outer forearm
  • Low block with knife-hand

* Blocking Routine

  • Low block
  • Rising block
  • Outer forearm block
  • Moving forward punch
  • Inner forearm block (Back stance)
* New Stances
  • Parallel ready stance (narani junbi sogi)
  • Attention stance (charyot sogi)
  • Sitting stance/Horse-riding stance (annun sogi)
  • Walking stance (gunnun sogi) (front)
  • L-stance (niunja sogi) (back)

* Step Sparring

  • Beginning 3-step sparring (alone)

* One-Steps

  • Step back, Rising block, Reverse punch
  • Step back, Grab wrist (Left hand), Round kick
  • Open hand by left ear (Horse-riding stance), block (pushing arm away), punch right, punch left (both under arm), punch mouth/throat level right
  • Inner forearm block (back stance), front kick
  • X-block, Lift leg up, side kick

  • Two releases from straight grab to the wrist
  • Two releases from a cross grab to the wrist

* Breaking Routine

  • None required at this level 

* Required knowledge

  • Know the meaning of the color "white" in white belt (white is empty, like a blank piece of paper – no knowledge of taekwon-do)
  • Know the order of belt ranks:
     10th gup
     low white
     5th gup
     high green (blue stripe)
     9th gup
     high white (yellow stripe) 4th gup
     low blue
     8th gup
     low yellow
     3rd gup
     high blue (red stripe)
     7th gup
     high yellow (green stripe)
     2nd gup
     low red
     6th gup
     low green
     1st gup
     high red (black stripe)
  • Know the characteristics of an Attention stance (charyot sogi):
    • Additional Notes: The heels of the feet are together forming a 45-degree angle and both knees are locked. The arms are dropped naturally at sides with elbows slightly bent. The hands are lightly clenched fists. The eyes face front slightly above the horizon.
  • Know the characteristics of a Parallel ready stance (narani junbi sogi):
    • Additional Notes: The feet are even and parallel. The hands are lightly clenched fists. They are 2 inches apart and are 3 inches from abdomen. The elbows are 4 inches from the floating ribs. The upper arms are forward at 30-degrees and the lower arms are bend upwards at 40-degrees.
  • Know how to count to 10 in Korean:
