Below is Dr Graveline's list for "Statin Alternatives". [UPDATE 04/30/08]
"Statin Alternatives" are not designed to "lower cholesterol" but do prevent inflammation and have the same anti-inflammatory affect as 20 mg's of Lipitor (atorvastatin), without side effects. (i.e. anti-oxidant, reduce platelet stickiness, controls homocysteine).
Daily Amounts
* buffered aspirin - 81 mg (contains beneficial magnesium)
* CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) - 100 to 150 mg (gelcaps - NOT powdered) with some Vitamin E
** Folic Acid - 400 to 800 mcg
** B6 - 80 to 100 mg
** B12 - 200 to 250 mcg
** (all 3 of these B Vitamins control Homocysteine)
* Omega 3 (fish oil, cod liver oil or krill oil) 1,200 mg (or more with personal/family history of CVD)
Notes [NEW 04/30/08]:
Fish oil, especially in large doses over a period of time, has a blood-thinning effect and thus affects bleeding time. If you are taking warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, aspirin or blood pressure medications, only take fish oil with a physician's supervision.
Excessive vitamin A and D is possible with too much cod liver oil. Pregnant women and women who are trying to become pregnant must be careful about excessive intake of vitamin A due to its potential effect on the fetus.
If you are 'aspirin sensitive' (I am), I prefer grape seed extract, which inhibits platelet clotting.
